I'm doing my first Alaskan cruise at the end of this month so I can't comment on if it's actually worth it but I can tell you that the Balcony rooms may experience a price drop closer to your departure date which means you could upgrade to Balcony room for less than what it currently costs.
For example, when we booked our Oceanview Room in late March it would have cost an extra $700 for a Balcony Room however there was a price drop in early May and now the upgrade is only $200 (and of course we jumped at it).
If money is really tight you could book a room and then take your chances and hope for a price drop. Good luck.

Update - spoke with TA today and she advised that it was fine for my friend and I to have different insurance suppliers even though we're in the same room.
She had never received a booking before that requested 2 different insurance companies so she had to go ask her boss about it. All sorted.
Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response.
This is a US-based TA so hopefully it's just a misunderstanding. She can be a bit flaky at times!

Am finalising booking thru a TA. I'm an from Australia and my friend is an American. We want to choose different insurance companies that will repatriate us back to our home countries should anything happen. The TA's website even suggest that non-US residents purchase insurance in their home country.
My friend wanted to purchase the TA's insurance. Why is our TA saying that my non-purchase of their insurance will affect my friend's ability to purchase?
It was a short reply to email as their office had just closed but I smell a 'losing my commission' rat but it could also be a honest mistake. She asked that we speak on Monday to sort it out.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Will We see whales from ship?

Are you doing a round trip cruise and coming back via Victoria? Depending on how long you're in port, you can take a whale watching tours from there. It might be an option if you can't rearrange your other tours and you don't see any whales along the way.
