  1. Sprinkles--Thanks for your great post! We will be taking a Canada/New England cruise THIS Oct. on HAL... We too are budget minded, and much prefer public transportation than ship's tours. It worked great for us in Vancouver last year.

One question.....How did you pay for all the "little" things? Like the funicular in Quebec, or the bus rides. In Vancouver, we used Credit cards or American cash for just about everything. For Eastern Canada, should I exchange some money before we leave?

    Thanks!

$USD is widely accepted in eastern Canada as it is a well-established tourism area - even the city busses in Saint John will take your $USD. Whether you exchange some or not is a personal preference - but just wanted to let you know we welcome your currency.

  2. pal2pluto or anyone else who can help,

We would like to rent a car to drive to the caves and fundy trailway when we are in Saint John's (all your postings have convinced me) but I am having difficulty finding a rental car place - is there any that I can book that is within a short walking distance of the pier where the ship will be docked or is there any that will come pick us up and take us to the rental car counter? Is so, could you please supply me the rental company name and address? As I see that there are 5 Avis rental counters in Saint John but I don't know which one to rent with that will make it easy to get to (I called the 800 number but did not get any help in retrospect to the area).

    Thanks for the help, cruzbound

Find out which berth you will be docking at here:

    http://www.cruisesaintjohn.com/visitsaintjohn/cruiseschedule.asp

If it is Pugsley Terminal, go with AVIS 2 blocks from ship.

If it is Long Wharf, go with either AVIS or Enterprise (10 min walk from ship)

AVIS is at 4 Water Street call 506-634-7750

Enterprise is at 132 Station Street call 506-693-8688

I would forget calling the national toll free numbers - call them locally direct as the call centres won't be able to answer specific questions you may have related to renting to cruise ship pax + reserve early as there will be alot of cruise ship pax looking to rent.

  3. Hello All,

We will be at the caves as it approaches high tide, high tide, and as it pulls away. I remember the last time we were in St. John we were shocked at the rapid change in the water height right before our eyes.

I do have a question that I posted else where. As we will have time to explore the area around the Sea Caves, does anyone have suggestions?

And what is the name of the restaurant on the beach?

I think you are looking for The Cave View Family Restaurant on the beach. There is also the Sea Side Restaurant.

Perhaps the extra time could be spent exploring the Fundy Trail Parkway: http://www.fundytrailparkway.com/

  4. We sail at 5pm. If you look at the tides for this day is appears we would only have an opportunity to explore the caves after 3pm....isn't that cutting it close since St. Martins is at least 45 minutes away from the port? Thank you for your optimism but I am just afraid to pay that much for the excursion and then be seriously let down.

I have a suggestion - around 10:30 take a photo of your ship from Market Square boardwalk - and then take another around 4:30 before boarding again from the same spot and same frame - then you can show people the dramatic tide change by showing the 2 pics together.

  5. Can someone help me out? We will be in St. John on Oct. 7, 2008 and I would love to go to the caves at St. Martin. I'm thinking about renting a car. However, I am assuming I want to be able to see it at both High Tide and Low Tide.

How do I find out when the best time is for viewing High Tide and Low Tide on this date? Also a friend that we will be traveling with mentioned that there is no tide on this day due to being a new moon. Is this true?

Sorry but I just don't have a clue about the tides.

Thanks in advance for helping me clear up the "Tide" mystery.

There is a tide everyday ...

You can check the schedules here: http://www.tourismsaintjohn.com/files/fuse.cfm?section=54&screen=445

From this schedule you can plan when you want to be in St. Martins. You can enjoy low tide roughly 1.5 hours before and after exact low-tide time.
