A quick question on the new Star Balcony suites. We are on the Legend transatlantic in December and are considering an upgrade to a balcony suite but wondered, once underway, if there would ever be an opportunity to have the doors open, especially at night. On our TA last year the wind and waves never seemed to subside enough to do so. Can anyone who has stayed in a balcony suite on a TA weigh in?

    Thanks!

I was on a Star Breeze TA some years ago in a balcony and I recall having the windows open at night on occasion, though I preferred to sleep with them closed.

Also, I'm on the Legend Dec TA as well this year, and hope it's as good as my last cruise with Windstar!

  2. I read this all the time, that it's so important to find a good TA. The trouble is - how does one actually find a good TA? When I was booking a Disney cruise, I researched a TA with tons of experience in DCL and who was very well recommended on the disboards back when it was okay to discuss TAs. Got zero service and it took forever for them to get back to me when I had a question. I had to cancel that cruise so when I booked the next time I went with a big box store.

Now, same issue with MSC. I chose to email a TA to ask if she could take over my booking (which was only 10 days old) as she also had tons of people raving about her. She never even answered my email.

I'm not sold on TAs. :(

Sure, many are not that good, as in any service industry. It may take time for you to find one that provides quality service and responds timely. All I know is that if I had to call the cruise lines directly it's more than likely I wouldn't cruise at all. It's just not worth the frustration nor the time to deal with their occasional incompetence.

  3. Lots of complaints here about poor communications. I just call, text or email my travel agent for all things re MSC, and he just gets it done. Travel agents provide good service, as long as you find a good one, and this is one of those issues which show why they are often better than any perceived benefits for booking direct with the cruise line.

  4. I had slow but quite reliable access on the Star Breeze on a transatlantic. Faster would be ideal but it worked just fine.

  5. I was on the Star Breeze in April for its transatlantic cruise from Aruba to Tenerife. The internet on board was good enough to check email and do research. I had to stay in touch with work and it was perfectly fine for that. No, it’s not fast. Unlike Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, which do have fast internet now (sufficient for video streaming and VoIP calls) Windstar is using older tech and is slower.

As for EU SIM cards, I use a 3UK sim and simply top up the account before leaving. It offers unlimited data in the UK and 12GB elsewhere, and they cover over a hundred countries. If you want an Italian sim, I used TIM and 3 (Italia) earlier this year...where I was TIM had better coverage but both are good.

  6. This type of insurance is very expensive. I work for an electric utility and we had storm insurance that covered losses over $25 million. After a few years, we decided to self insure as the premiums were so costly.

Of course it's expensive! But it's insurance...and I'd be surprised if NCL didn't have it. And if they don't have it, then they've, like your experience, decided to self-insure because they would have found it less expensive than buying insurance. Either way, this type of weather impact on their business is expected and accounted for in their budget. So while they might be out of pocket if they self-insured, don't for a minute think they didn't know what they "bought" by self-insuring, assuming they don't actually have insurance. Either way, I don't think we need to be sympathetic for NCL.

It also appears that they didn't make their offer until the State of Florida ordered evacuations and a state of emergency, and Irma was classified as a category 5...either of which might be sufficient for an insurance policy to kick in and provide benefits, and which may be why their offer is objectively good. It seems RCL didn't offer as much last week (I'm not completely sure about this) and perhaps they didn't have insurance. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm glad NCL is providing good customer service during this storm.

  7. Today, NCL came through with flying colors. They decided to spend millions and millions of dollars to take care of customers. Way more than they need to. They are taking a major financial hit here and doing customers right.

Anybody that misses that is, well... just missing it.

Are you sure? Don't they have insurance for these types of events? Most businesses have a form of business interruption coverage, which would apply in such circumstances. I would be very surprised if this was actually costing NCL much at all.

  8. My husband and I are thinking about taking the Star Breeze TA this fall. We've done lots of TAs and never get sea sick but we are worried about this smaller ship. Does anyone have experience with how rocky this size ship is compared to larger ships crossing the Atlantic? Thanks!

I was on the TA in April on this ship, and it was fantastic. We had more movement in the Caribbean than in the Atlantic, but it was never rough. Compared to larger ships, this ship feels every bump, but the larger ships barely feel anything...

  9. If your cabin changed you likely will not get new tickets. I did not. But just bring the email or whatever document you have that notes the new cabin number.

My travel agent obtained the new tickets today. I think it's somewhat strange that any of us would think not having accurate tickets is acceptable.

  10. I'm on a cruise next week and received nothing via post and minimal info via email. In fact, I'm waiting on new tickets since my cabin changed...seems like they really do need help with their back office processes. My first Windstar cruise and I'm looking forward to it, but I agree with the other posts here that this isn't the best first impression.

  11. I went on an online site and did not see the additional fees. I also called one agency directly and they quoted me the $684 price. Maybe try another site? The problem with this itinerary is airfare. I think you have to break down the flights and get off the canary islands. Then book a one way back from Europe. I don't know if Windstar offers better airfares than what you can book yourself.

Windstar doesn't update prices in real time, so even online agencies need to call them to get current prices. The cost is/was actually $614.50 + $218.75 + $55 = $888.25 plus gratuities.
