  1. We've been really lucky too.  Never had to use our EHIC cards either.  Like insurance, you have it but hope never to use it!  You never know what is round the corner.  Travel Insurance is great, but you may have to provide your insurance details and prove that they will meet the bill for any treatment before they let you through the hospital door!  Or just show your EHIC card for free treatment.  EHIC are not and never have been intended to be the same as, or to replace travel insurance which is a totally different thing.

  2. Been on several cruises where a passenger has injured themselves (falling out of tour bus, tripping on pavement). Quick trip to the local A&E (ambulance), bandaged up (and xrays or whatever) back on the ship before leaving.  All free of charge thanks to the EHIC.   But you should remember to take your EHIC card ashore with you.  But we wont have to bother with that soon.  Just hope you are not accident prone!!

  3. We have more than 2 cruises booked for both 2019 and 2020.  I am concerned and worried.  But having cruised so much we are now perfectly content to stay on the ship rather than experience any inconvenience, although visas may be required just to board the ship in Southampton.  When I was younger I would not have been so content.  I cannot see the 'younger generations' being content to accept the limitations and restrictions being enforced of them, nor the loss of benefits which we now take for granted.

  4. Yes, I remember cruising before the EU *.  I remember the queues.  I remember being interviewed about the amount of sterling being taken out of the country.    Yes, we survived.  But we have got used to the way things are now - I dont want to just survive.

  5. Docco,  I have just read that BBC news report about the contract awarded to a ferry company with no ships!!!  It would be really funny, if only it wasnt so serious.

We've cruised to all the places mentioned by the posters above over the last 30+ years, with few problems - probably due to the arrangements we have through the EU.

Unfortunately people cannot seem to grasp the things the EU have enabled us to do, take for granted now, and cannot appreciate how things could change without these.  Things have changed, times have changed.  The world has changed.

  6. I really dont get the posts from various members about having this post shut down or not to keep posting if your post does not agree with some others' views.

It is one thread on a large forum.  There are plenty of other threads.  If you are not interested or if other people's views or opinions offend you so much why not just scroll on past and not open this particular thread at all.

Things may turn out fine.   Things may turn out not so fine.  We dont know yet.  But only one side of the debate is acceptable?

  7. All hypothetical, but I wondered if having left on 29 March 2019 what would happen to duty paid goods purchased before 29 March but brought back into the country, on cruise ship, after 29 March?  Would it still be duty paid or would it have become duty free (even though duty had been paid).

  8. On recent Princess cruise (Southampton to Southampton via Scandinavia ) non-EU passport holders (will apply to us in future) had to individually attend immigration interviews and have all documentation checked before being allowed to go ashore.  Long queues and very time consuming even though the majority of passengers were from UK.  When such actions take place for all passengers then it would hardly be worth going ashore!

  9. A few years ago P&O added a fuel surcharges to cruises, and I think to cruises already booked.

I wonder if they will do the same again?  And a currency surcharge?

If they did add fuel and/or currency surcharges would you be able to cancel your cruise and get a refund?

  10. Yes, I should have done something like that. But I am used to dealing with the cruise specialist type travel agents over the phone. When I phoned the TUI number that is what I was expecting. Didnt realise that phone calls can be re routed to the next available place, in my case a TUI shop Glasgow! They also knew very little about cruises, telling me that I would not need my passport. However, cannot fault their enthusiasm as to answer my questions they had to phone some of their customers to find out!! I know now and understand their system somewhat!

  11. British cruisers are notorious (as a generalization) as being very poor spenders when on board and ashore. So cruise lines and ports are more than happy to encourage a much more diverse clientele. Cruise lines are also gearing up to the Australian and the high spending Asian market. Passengers from these areas are quite prepared to fly to Europe for their cruises, and would easily make up for any decline in British cruisers.

  12. Visas and flights?

There are checks on non EU passport holders already in countries such as Norway. Also non EU passengers having to spend hours queuing whilst on the ship for face to face immigration interviews (Princess ship sailing Southampton to Southampton).

We would be non EU passport holders shortly. (Although as we are British any rules will not apply to us :) TIC )

There would not be punishments - it would be following the rules, rules which we helped to formulate. And rules that we will supposedly apply to any one crossing our boarders.

The cruise industry is growing globally, so lack of British cruisers who notoriously spend little when ashore would not be a massive concern. All the cruise lines are gearing up for the Australian and Asian markets. So no one else except us would be too unduly worried by a down turn in the UK cruise industry.

Duty free restrictions would apply to all goods brought into country. No Duty Paid allowance.

Could there be restrictions on the amount of £s you are allowed to take out of country?

Lack of the EHIC card and reciprocal health care. Increased travel insurance.

These are just a few things off the top of my head. There are so many far reaching implications.

  13. So sorry to hear this. Worst nightmare. Hopefully P&O will be compassionate. On another site, which I cannot mention - but is the one you are not allowed to put links to and has numerous P&O cruise groups there are quite often posts with people trying to sell cruises. Hope you can get something sorted. Thinking of you. xxxxx

  14. I firmly believe, with a disabled OH, that the lifts are for everyone and everyone is just as entitled to use them as anyone else. It just needs thought, consideration, respect and manners. I get very upset with the 'lift police'.

  15. Love Princess, but the ships that sail from Southampton are more or less the same as Ventura and Azura. Smaller Princess ships sail from, I think, Dover. But they are expensive. Not been on Fred, but lots of people like them.

We are going to try Marella. Not been yet so dont really know if I can recommend them or not. But they are now sailing from the UK, mainly Newcastle, but some from Southampton. Great itineraries. Ships new to Marella previously RCI vision class ships now Discovery 1 & 2. Explorer next year from UK, previously Mein Sheff. Smaller ships and refurbished. Good prices and AI so no problems with tipping or drinks (we dont drink) Getting some really good reviews.

  16. Not generous at all! Many very annoyed passengers. £50 or £75 OBC (depending on length of cruise?) goes no where near the increased fares now being charged for replacement/alternative cruises. Very poor attitude from P&O.

As a passenger if you wish to, say upgrade you are referred to the price on the day of your booking. However, P&O does not apply this rule to themselves and of course fare have increased considerably across the board since people booked their Oriana cruises.
