    Nice photos!

I'm not anticipating seeing a lot of wildlife but we may see some sea / shore birds or maybe a whale or two. My main interest is in landscapes however. I expect that the long lens will be handy for picking out some micro landscapes from the ship as we pass through some of the fjords. Hope so anyhow.

So I had a 2x on my 70-200 and was glad, or so I thought. I jumped on the balcony, and saw a whale breach. Got camera set for where it was happening. got a few shots. At 170, seems I rotated the ring. what kills me, I could have had a great 400 shot if I knew ring position. Well when it is day light at 1:30am it's past my bedtime so kindy drowsy.  ;-)

Thanks.  I bough a box of larger ones to stick in my dry bag.  They're rechargeable but I will just use a new one a each day.  I will not open my drybag in between excursions inside.  I will leave it outside on the balcony and switch out batteries and cards there.  Only at the end of the day will I bring the bag inside and let it climatize for a few hours before opening and getting ready for the next morning.

Hopefully this should keep my lenses safe.  Now, if I only had more weight allowance.

Curious how it went, If I am not too early. Also, do you tie the camera bag up to something, as the water can be a bit rough. I am also interested as I thought about bringing 4 batteries for 1 camera for a Norway trip. I have time to get more.

  3. Hi all, when I was on a South American cruise we had photo experts on board. I noticed that when I took my camera from a/c room to deck to shoot. The lens was fogged up. The expert I talked to mentioned keeping the camera wrapped in towel in a drawer, and taking out immediately to the deck to shoot. Now, I am going to Norway with Camera and two lenses (still not decided which two, that is the second question. So am I worried about room to outside to shoot and fogging. Or cool room to cool air is not the same as cool to humid warm?  And the second question, 16-35 and 24-105 oor 16-35 and 70=200 with 1.4 doubler? I have seen some folk talking that not as much creatures vs creation to shoot. So 16-35 and 24-105 is the best choice vs 70-200 with 1.4x in Alaska?

Sorry folks after 30 cruises with Holland that the OP states completed, the only thing I personally would be looking for/expect once I was able to make it back on board safely after being robbed or harmed would be to land into a calm,  EDUCATED compassionate environment that included hands on assistance from Holland staff to help and assist me to get it figured out instead of suggesting I stay behind and borrow money. (Aren't our passports already verified and on file when checking in? Truly a question as I always thought this was the case)  I would expect the same from a hotel I have built a relationship with if emergency occurred. Great lesson learned here for all of us at the OP's expense. Makes our plans for the world cruise seem a lot less appealing if this is how things are handled when something lousy happens. We can always travel wiser and not bash the people that help us to do so.

I thought the same thing as you reading it, that it was Holland who told him to borrow money. But when re-reading it. It appears that the US consulate told him that.

We’ve been booked on the Sea-Sydney portion of the cruise you booked on.  I understand that the SF/Sea to Yokohama or Sydney is one of the most booked future cruises being booked on the ship.

The line at 9am for 10am tender tickets this morning stretched from the Ocean Bar past the Signature Shops!

Here’s hoping your manna is positive!!

    Tim

We had lines starting at 5:30am ish, for 9am tender tickets to Rapa Nui, on day 2 the hotel captain started the 9am tickets at 7:30am. And some aggressive activity in the lines. With some folk thinking that putting a towel on a chair reserves their place in a tender line.

  6. No one has said you can get a one time 10 day transit visa to go to Brazil, at least we did. Landed in Rio 3 days. Flew to IGR had local guide, pick us up. Took us to Best Western, day 0. Day 1 some bird sanctuary and the Brazil side. You do get wet walking out to Devil's throat. He then drove us to Argentina side. Day 2, all of Ars side. Day 3 drove around Puerto Igauzu. Showed us where 3 countries can be seen. Then went out of state to Wanda mines. Dropped us at airport and flew to EZE. Took white taxi in airport for $36.xx

PS Tomorrow we board Zaandam to San Diego. :-)

PPS hide all jewelry and big cameras even on tours in BsAs

  7. Hello fellow cruisers,

We are heading to SA for a trip from BsAs to San Diego soon. And we are plotting our shore excursions. We are trying to find out which ports have an interesting city attached to the port, and not do any excursions. I think the Uruguay port city has a lot of postings about walking it on your own or doing a hop on hop off. What about others along the way, like Lima or the cities in Mexico.

    Thanks

PS my fortune cookie the other night said from a Vietnamese pho place.

"you will step on the soil of many countries"

  8. Hi fellow cruizers,

We are heading for the March 20th Bs As to San Diego sailing next year. And we are stopping in Rio along the way. What are the must haves in Rio. How about security? I sense that Europe's fears are pickpocket related. While I have been reading the Brazil's is being held up at knife or gun points? Are these tales exaggerated? Do they happen because of looking like a tourist, with flash camera, jewelry and fanny packs?

  9. Hey Scuba...x2,

I just read all 14 pages of this thread, and it brought back a few memories from my trip last year. And it makes me wonder what I missed. We went last year on Legend of the seas in June. We picked a 3 day/2 night SPB as our target ship for our Baltic cruise. We were celebrating our 30th so we went all out and did a 52 day voyage of most of Northern Europe. I would like to suggest for anyone doing an open jaw to include a free stop over in Iceland. It is so nice to go to a country where they put the bankers who screwed up the world into jail. But I digress, we spent a few days in CPH before ship left. Some how I had found that DenRus was the tour group to choose, so we did. There was an Italian couple who lived by the last minute to do things, and ended up with an excursion from the ship. At the end they walked around the city, they were able to leave the excursion. Our tour vehicle was a 15 passenger van with 4 couples. A British couple and 3 from Canada. Since we liked the folkloric dance on board we booked through the ship a similar product in the town. Well we had a 24 voice mens choir (Russian Army) and a 24 person dance troop and a 12 pc musical support. WOW, I guess white nights is a good time to be in SPB. As for vest in Hermitage, I had a Scott E-vest on with many pockets. So my wife and I rolled up our weather shells and stuffed them in the back pocket. I think that the tour groups pay the extra for sticker that says we CAN take photos any where. We did get to the Faberge egg display, but were not able/allowed to take any photos. It was a diff type of security, as it was big men in all corners watching for any camera movement. As opposed to every where else was elderly women. BTW, one of the guy's camera was "accidentally" beeping* and shooting in the Topaz room. :-)

    Thanks for the memories,

    B

PS sometimes shore excursions are not the worst. Just back from 38 day trip to Oz. Left 2 weeks after breaking ankle, and shore excursions were about the max I could do.
