IF the crew got the J&J vaccine with only a 66.3% efficacy rate, I'm concerned about more positives in the future. Pfizer's vaccine showed efficacy of 94%-95%, so why not wait for that vaccine?

Pfizer’s 2nd dose is after 21 days, then you’re ok after another 14. So 35 days total for Pfizer vs 14 for J&J.

  2. In ‘14 we took Solstice from Seattle on the Inside Passage to Ketchikan, Endicott Arm, Juneau, Skagway, Victoria BC and back to Seattle. First week of June, it was cool (OK Cold since I live in FL) and rainy. But as a guide told us in Ketchikan “if you CAN’T see the mountain, it’s raining. If you CAN see the mountain it’s going to rain.” That’s AK weather.

Really no need to speculate.  Here is what Celebrity is requiring for startup cruises straight from their FAQ section.   I have the white CDC card, my old yellow vaccination card, and letters for each shot from my medical providers MyChart system.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to cruise? What documents count as proof of vaccination?  How far in advance do I need to get my vaccine?

At this time, we are requiring guests 18 years and older to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Each guest must submit proof of full vaccination no later than boarding day, in the form of the original vaccination record document issued by either (1) the country’s health authority that administered the vaccination (e.g., U.S. CDC's Vaccination Record Card) or (2) the guest's medical provider that administered the vaccination. Electronic vaccination records will only be accepted for residents of those countries where electronic documentation is the standard issued form (e.g., a unique QR code). The vaccination record submitted to Celebrity Cruises must show that the guest is fully vaccinated. This means that the guest has completed the full cycle of required doses for the vaccine administered (e.g., received the second dose in a two-dose series), and that the guest has received the final dose at least 14 days before sailing.

Is the US “considered a country where electronic documentation is the standard”? I have my proof on my hospital’s electronic portal, and I can print it out, but they have not provided cards.

  4. FL Gov DeSantis and Atty Gen Moody held a meeting with cruise industry execs in Port Canaveral this morning regarding restarting cruising in the US by July. Consensus seems to be that unelected bureaucrats, the CDC, should not have the power to shut down an entire industry and then just “kick the can” rather than engaging.  Atty Gen Moody says FL will “take all legal action as necessary” with the federal govt to get cruising started again.

I have come to expect this from the CDC. I have no trust in their decisions or recommendations. They appear to be just another bureaucratic agency with a political agenda and a bias against the cruise industry. If they were operating from a scientific point of view the airlines, amusement parks, big box stores, etc would be held to the same standard.

Especially since the 2 states most affected, AK and FL, are red states.

There is definitely a shortage here. We have done a very poor job in vaccine procurement. I just checked on our CTV news web site and it shows we are at number 53 in the world in vaccines given. My wife and I are in our early 70’s and we may get our first shots sometime in April. Then a second 4 months after that. We have friends in the US and the UK who have had both shots.

When Florida first got vaccines in late December there were people chartering planes flying down here from Canada to get it. You now have to live in FL or own property here to get it, but there’s enough supply that there haven’t been any lines in the Jacksonville area in weeks. Everybody we know who wants it has gotten it. You can get it at most pharmacies, most grocery stores and even in church! We even have 2 converted city buses driving around where you can get it. We have Pfizer, Moderna and J&J, and some places will give you your choice of vaccine.

You might want to do a bit of research on that. The UK adopted the delayed second dose with considerable success, and more and more of the medical community see the advantage of having more people getting first doses rather than fewer people with both doses. Of course, if unlimited vaccine and personnel to administer it were available, following the 28/35 day gap makes sense, but I know of no jurisdiction with unlimited resources. This article is worth reading:

    https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/2021/03/17/why-one-covid-19-vaccine-dose-is-better-than-two.html?rf

Georgia (US) just announced anybody over 16 can get the vaccine starting Thursday. Florida is currently vaccinating age 50+ and should be open to all comers by May. And both states are doing both doses on 21/28 day schedules.

I was told that they were keeping records online for non customers.  We are CVS customers so I am not worried. The real problem is, our county health department is a provider and they are keeping no records of vaccinations other than a card you get from them. This was why we waited until CVS was offering vaccinations. CVS was also much more organized as our City and county were offering public vaccinating at the Alamo Dome with hundreds of people waiting in lines hours to get their shots.

There are so many different sources for shots in FL keeping a database could be problematic.

To my knowledge there is no national database.  We were given a document from the Department of Health with the dates and doses of our vaccination.

Not the same as the card that my family in another state received.

Mine is simply two entries in the clinic’s online portal. Paperless! I saved a screen shot in my photos in case I can’t access the online portal but I wonder what the ship will accept as proof?

Perhaps the OP was thinking about future seasons.  Given recent demonstrations and violence, I haven't seen anything that makes me want to go to Seattle.  Perhaps Vancouver would be a better choice.

Exactly what I meant without trying to be “political”, although to me it’s a safety issue. Should Seattle lose police, would Celebrity want 2000 guests embarking there? Thanks for clarifying.

I hope that I am not taking the COVID-19 situation lightly, but could we be out of the woods by June 1st? We are/were sailing on the Jewel June 8th out of Vancouver. And I know it sounds selfish, but NCL could switch to Seattle and run buses for those who could not change flights from Vancouver to Seattle. It seems the port is empty on those days, and the company could mitigate their losses. I guess it all depends on how well the public practices social distancing. I feel terrible for those who are sick or worse, and I am wary about all of the sanitation measure put in place by the lines, but we planned this 18 months ago and there are 19 of us going. We more than likely will not be able to all get our schedules together again. Best wishes to all as we work our way through this.

The Jones Act would have to be suspended. Ships out of Seattle have to have at least one foreign port before they return to Seattle, and with both Vancouver and Victoria closed, right now that's not possible. Trump could probably suspend it under the national emergency guidelines though.

Does anyone have any idea where all of the ships will dock during this suspension?  I can't think of any ship yard that would be big enough or have enough dock space for the length of the suspension.

I'm sure they will be doing deep cleaning, repairs, etc.  The ships should be shiny and clean when they are back up and running.

Norwegian Sky and Pearl will be docked in Jacksonville. Carnival Sensation will be here as well as Carnival Ecstasy which is homeported here.

Who in Celebrity's elderly-skewing demographic *doesn't* have some type of chronic condition? I'm sure there are some, but Celebrity won't be able to get the boats half full anymore if that's the new criteria.

That criteria would have eliminated 3/4 of the passengers the last time we were on Reflection! And good luck finding a doctor to sign a note like that considering the possible liability if you did come down with something!

  14. I've had problems with using it on an iPad. When I book something and try to put my info in, the scroll box for country is unusable. I had to book shore excursions and spec restaurants over the phone and complained both times. Perhaps they're repairing it (hope, hope, hope).

  15. We just disembarked Reflection this morning, after visiting San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. We loved the ship! We've cruised on Solstice before, but this was our first time on Reflection. The ship is gorgeous and spotless. The staff was pleasant and efficient. The food was fine in the MDR and in the Oceanview Cafe. We did not do any specialty restaurants, but know people who did and they were happy about it.

My only negative comments were about several of the shows. If Jayne Curry is on the ship, her show is a must see. She moved over to Constellation in St. Maarten but may come back. The Momentum show doesn't have any momentum, despite apparently having stolen a circus' entire acrobatic troupe. My wife and I both fell asleep in the middle of it. However, these same acrobats were really impressive in Reflection The Show. Find something else to do when the Elton John tribute guy is performing, as he is really awful. The comedian was ok, but not an act I'd pay to see.

The port visits were fine, but the ship arrives in San Juan at 3:30, which is too late for the walking tour because darkness falls quickly. Also, San Juan would be well advised to stop running a mosquito fogging truck past the walking tour. It passed us, and fogged us, three times before we heard it coming back and ducked into a store to avoid it! Besides, there probably aren't that many mosquitos breeding on the paved streets anyway.

All in all, loved the ship and the experience and would recommend it.

  16. We're also on the Nov 28th sailing, forward on the port side. Last summer we sailed on Solstice in Alaska and were very near the forward elevators. I was worried there would be noise, but there was absolutely none. Tried to get the same stateroom on Reflection but it was booked, so we got next door. I prefer to be forward rather than aft so I can see forward from the balcony, but that's just personal preference. We've sailed Carnival Miracle, but I like the decor of Celebrity's Solstice class ships a lot better.
