People tend to feel safer because they're on a ship-sponsored excursion but the person who died in this incident was on a shop-sponsored excursion, the woman who died in the zip-lining accident in Roatan in March was on a ship-sponsored excursion. I think people often have a false sense of security just because they're booking a ship-sponsored so they maybe do little or no research.
Before we went cave tubing last Dec I did a lot of research on here and finally decided on cave-tubing.com and we had a fantastic day. They link the tubes which can take a bit of the fun out of it but I was honestly glad we were linked in certain areas when seeing all the guests on the Carnival excursion running into trees, etc.. I only recently read about this fatal tubing incident but it honestly doesn't surprise me that it happened on the ship-sponsored excursion. Our guides we're VERY professional, clearly knew what they were doing, they kept everyone linked the entire time and it appeared to be the opposite experience with the ship excursion.

We spent a week on St John last summer and I wanted to rent a dinghy but we never got to it, always too busy doing something else but I can tell you that they're very popular and we'll definitely rent one the next time we visit St John. You just need to be careful that you don't stop anywhere where you're so close to coral that you're going to step on it when you get out.
I've read that they can be a bit of a challenge to get in and out of for some but hopefully someone who has rented them will reply to your post and give you some first-hand experience.:)
If you rent one you need to be careful about the time considering you have a cruiseship to get back to by a certain time.

I got a AAA rate through hotels by city dot com and I am paying $135 for the room at Comfort Suites next Friday.
When I booked our room at CS last December through the smartertravel link I found it was cheaper than the AAA rate, might be worth checking out.

The grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious!! And the rum punch. :)
This is a popular sunset cruise, you definitely want to book ahead because they tend to fill up. I've done it twice and highly recommend it, the owners are great.
