  1. We did this itinerary last year and did Norway in a Nutshell from Bergen on our own. We booked the trains, boat, bus separately (did not use Norway in a Nutshell website). It was an incredibly beautiful trip and very affordable, maybe $200 pp or less.

It's not for the feint of heart, though, because it takes up almost all of your time in port and if any leg is delayed, you could miss the ship. I was willing to take the risk because I figured it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I researched how to get to Alesund independently if necessary. I didn't want to do the ship's excursion because it didn't even go on the fjord, the most beautiful part.

There are Norway centric cruises that visit several fjords, I'm sure they are incredible; this itinerary does not. But it has a lot of other things to offer, we loved it!

  2. We just went thru LIM last week. Our layover was from 7:30 PM to 3:40 AM. There is a hotel right next to the airport (Wyndam Costa Del Sol). It's connected to the airport by a covered walkway on the upper lever.

You can book a room at the hotel and sleep there, if you want. They also have a 24 hour spa that you can buy a pass to - I think it's about $60 (check their website). People were sleeping in the spa on the loungers when we went to the spa - obviously using it to crash for a few hours.

Then when we went back to the airport on the covered walkway to catch our flight, the walkway was full of people sleeping on the floor (with blankets and eye masks, that sort of thing). This was obviously a popular place to sleep for free at LIM.

Those are all the options we saw when we were there. We also flew United for one international leg, if you're carry on is smallish I don't think you'll have a problem, but if it's a suitcase sized roller it might be an issue to have a laptop case too.

  3. You'll find plenty of places to buy wine in Copenhagen, just walking around Nyhavn and other places in the City center. I didn't find it all that expensive. If you happen to go to Torvehallerne, there are a couple wine shops there. We were in Copenhagen last September and brought several bottles onboard.

  4. We also tip $20 on the first day, when we make a few miscellaneous requests. Then an additional tip at the end. We often get to know our stewards a bit, and seems like they always have a family back home, little kids they don't see for months at a time. They work really hard, are grateful for the extra cash and we're happy to give it.

  5. I would just rent a car at LAX from any of the major rental companies and use a shuttle service or uber to get to the port from LAX. There are several shuttle services that provide this service - Prime Time, etc. We did this a few years ago (and we live in LA). LAX rental locations are all open 7 days a week.

  6. We disembarked in Copenhagen a couple of months ago and had an 11:40 flight, with latest check-in at 10:40. We did the early walk-off as soon it was announced at 7:00, got right on a taxi and were at the airport by 8:00.

The transfer offered by NCL was for flights departing 12:30 and later, if I remember correctly.

  7. Some policies define pre existing condition so that it applies to all close family members. Other policies define pre existing condition so that it applies only to close family members who are booked to travel with you.

If you ever want to purchase coverage due to the poor health of a relative who is not traveling, go with the latter type of policy.

If you cancel a trip due to a family member's medical condition, and the travel insurance definition of pre existing condition applies to that family member, it's not likely you'll collect, even if you were sold the policy.

  8. I'm not sure how old this lady is, but the article states that she went off sightseeing on her own. Doesn't seem very prudent for a solo woman to wander around a European city.

I am sorry but what a ludicrous statement!!!

I have wandered round "European" Cities all my life. Yes some are safer than others but it is 2016 and I don't need or want a Chaperone.

I also frequently wander around European cities alone. I'm not a baby and I can take care of myself.

I'm sorry this happened to this lady, but when you travel in places that are unfamiliar to you, you do need to educate yourself a bit about the locale, customs etc.

  9. Do you have the airline confirmation number/record locator? If so, just log on to the airline's website every few days and check for empty seats. Seating rarely stays the same over time, especially a few days out from departure, when frequent flyers begin to get upgraded.

If that doesn't work, tell the airline when you check in at the airport. Most airlines will try to work something out to put couples together.

  10. I don't care who the captain of the ship is, so long as he doesn't steer us aground or tip us over. I know meeting the crew is important to a lot of people, I'm not disparaging it - it's just not important to me. I like to meet people in a natural way when onboard - at a martini tasting, sharing a table etc.

Many of the roll calls I've checked out for our prior cruises have been pretty dull - how's the weather there, this is how weather is here, I just let the dog out...probably very nice people but not enough to make me get off of my massage table to go to a meet n greet.

  11. A younger group, more inclined to just want to do their own thing, live and let live, like so many on the west coast and not into organized activities as much. I didn't mean anything negative if that is what you may have thought.

I'm from LA and I think this is a major factor. In general people here don't like a lot of structure. Also the culture is very outdoorsy and activity-oriented and being cooped inside up does not appeal, when you could be out by the pool or up on the deck jogging or something. On the other hand the tendency is "everybody is welcome" - no one is likely to care if someone crashed the party.

I hope you have a nice cruise!
