  1. I agree with HANK!  Generally May is not hurricane season, so the odds are you won’t see bad storms.  But the sea is a fickle mistress anything can happen!  The cruise lines constantly track all bad weather happenings and are always going to avoid the bad weather if possible.  Relax, the only cruise ship that was lost sunk in very shallow water off the coast of Italy.

  2. As one who has used a scooter on many many cruises, please allow me to give you my perspective.  If our mom is able to stand and walk a few steps on her own, AND she doesn’t fear mechanical things then she will have ZERO problems.  The scooters that vendors rent should fit through the stateroom door.  Notice I said SHOULD.  The rentable scooters usually have a speed control (usually there is a turtle on one end of the dial and a rabbit on the other.  Have her practice on the turtle speed till she gets comfortable.

As far as I am concerned I would rather pick up the scooter outside the ship rather than in the cabin.  That way you can drive it to your stateroom and you’re not at the mercy of waiting till someone can take you.  Same for disembarking you wait in a comfy chair.

All in all she should love the experience and good voyage!

  3. Here is my 2 cents.  I have 2 disability scooters. Afikim S4! And a smsrtscoot.  Opposite ends of the scooter world.  The AFIKIM is amazing with a range of 30 miles, 10mph. Not portable in any sense of that word.  Would not work on a cruise ship.  The smartScoot costs mid 2k. It weighs about 40lbs with the seat. It costs 250 to 400 dollars on average for a cruise scooter rental.  10 cruises it pays for itself.  I have literally been all over Rome on mine.  The Coliseum, Forum, the Vatican, all over the city.  There were zero problems.

As far as anyone choosing one, that is a very very individual question.  Why do you want one?  Does it fit you?  Do you feel safe on it?  How fast and far will it go.  4mph is ok on a ship!  But when touring it might be too slow!  Being a big person, I was 350 lbs, I was concerned by construction.

Go to a scooter store, try them, inside and outdoors.  Do you like 3wheels or 4?  Do you feel safe on it?  Will it hold a cane or 2 or crutches?

  4. It’s August 2022, and I still have the smartscoot.  Scootanywhere is out of business.  My scooter was broken by SouthWest airlines.  They broke the tiller folding mechanism.  Hey handed me the pieces and said sorry!  I still love it!  It’s still great!  I have ridden it in Rome, Florence, corsica, Spain, Gibraltar, Bermuda and all the hills,  and it chugs along!

  5. I bought a smart scoot 5+ years ago.  Simply because we take cruises, go to Disney etc., and it's MUCH cheaper to own your own.  There are MANY MANY scooters out there and by no means am I trying to steer you toward a smartscoot.  HOWEVER, I have taken my scooter to the Coliseum, The Roman Forum, the Vatican, All over Spain ... Barcelona, Mont Blanc.  All over Malta.

NEVER had a problem!  Well until Southwest Air decided to force something and broke it!  The parts were 25 bucks.  The rear wheels can be narrowed to less than 29 inches to fit through stateroom doors.  It breaks down so you could store it under the bed.

Don't be afraid of scooters most rentals have a Turtle - Rabbit dial use the Turtle setting (slowest Speed) till you get used to it.  Really don't have your hubby push you all over the place it's tiring.

  6. This thread very much interested me. I have sailed on Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, NCL and Azamara. The worst cruise I had on any cruise line was on the Carnival Triumph. I thought the MDR was not very good. The crew seemed really grumpy. But after 4 days things brightened up. I had 2 really great Carnival Cruises after that. I thought NCL was very good, but it's just not my first choice. My favorite line is Celebrity and I had a really crappy departure on one cruise. It happens. I think RCL was nice but I found the Allure class to be insanely huge. Azamara INMHO was simply amazing. We decided to try the MSC YC. The price seemed reasonable, I love Italy and Italian culture. So why not try an Italian line. The worst cruise was just fine for me and the DW. If you don't try you'll never know for sure.

  7. This cruise was the first leg of a B2B. Unfortunately for me port intensive cruises wear me out. Much more than I anticipated. I had a mobility Scooter called a SmartScoot with me on this cruise. It was a God send! The rear wheels adjust to 24 inches which is small enough to get into the door of a regular cabin. HC cabins have an auto door opener and a wider door. This was not an HC cabin. We had 6050 a balcony Cabin. It was small by my standards but the bed was to die for! And big enough for a week's journey. The elevators are narrow too again I had no problem backing it to them or out of them. I thought the food in the MDR was very good. It exceeded my expectations, I would put it on par with the Specialty Restaurants on the NCL Cruise we were on. The buffet was quite small but very tasty. We went on a Greek night and I loved it.

The excursions we went on with the ships were pretty good. But I am beginning to realize I don't like excursions with more than 6 people. If I ever get to Corsica again I will venture off on my own because the tour we went on from the ship was 13 out of 10 on the boring scale.

The Crew Members are truly a Gem of the Azamara Cruise line. Service is tip top! The Azamazing Evening was as stated! They had an artist doing a rendition of the evening's Show. It was fantastic! Both the show and painting. We bought a print, mainly because we live in a small house and don't have room for anything bigger. It was signed by the artist, who is a really interesting man, and donates a lot to Charity!

More to come as I unwind my thoughts and pictures.

  9. We are presently on the Quest off the coast of Spain right this minute. This is our 5th day. I was seriously hoping that this cruise would have been asgood as our first Zenith Cruise in 2002. My expectations and hopes were well exceeded. The on board crew is outstanding. The food is exceptional for a Cruise ship ( from my experience ). The Azamazing evening was outstanding. It was the 3 Tenors in Lavorno. The theater was so nice, the tenors were amazing, the transportation was great. We had also done an excersion where you go to the market with the Chef, and then go back for fine dining that evening. I thoought $300 plus per person was outrageous. But Strangely enough it was worth it. I couldn’t afford to do it every cruise, but for special occations it’s perfect. We had 6 people @ the table and there are no words to adequate enough to describe how nice the food was.

Still 3 more days including today and each one is better than the previous one.

  10. First of all I was told that Rome would not be a good place to use a disability scooter. I rode mine from my hotel to the colosseum. Then through the colosseum threw 2 floors, there is an elevator. From there to the Forum. This was a challenge. You really can’t hold on tight or your body will be too jarred. The next day we did a Vatican tour, with no problems. Well a lot of things were loosened like the set screw of the throttle housing. I had to tighten stuff, and readjust the break.

I really beat the snot out of that poor baby. I brought 2 batteries, which was a good thing! Generally on eack of the tours drained the battery down to 2 leds. I would charge one when using the other.

The good it held up really well. The bad, Rome is mostly cobblestone. They are slicker than snot on a chickens lip! 3 speed settings makes that tolerable. I set it on high to be able to climb hills. The front wheel drive sucks for traction on slippery cobbles. But with out the 3rd speed I would never have climbed them.

Conclusion, I love it. It folds small enough to fit in a Toyota cab. It’s light and strong!

  11. I think I may qualified as obese. I am 5’7” 300 pounds. To be painfully honest, get a handicap room with a roll in shower. I was on the NCL Epic, and those showers were so small you couldn’t change your mind in them. And we had a spa suite. The other recommendation is to use the spa shower(s).

  12. What you can do with the Smartscoot rental is order it say for the week before you go. Learn to drive it and take it to the airport with you for the cruise. Use it on the cruise and then drive it to a cab and then in the airport for the trip back. You get home and box it up and UPS will come and get it easy peasy.

I don't work for SmartScoot or Scoot anywhere. And I get nothing for my recomendations.

  13. The Scooter can go as narrow as 22 inches wide. This is the narrowest setting. I would adjust the wheels to a width compatable to my stateroom door. Here is the URL for the Specs.

    https://www.smartscoot.com/foldable-mobility-scooter-specifications/

As far as rental goes this is the place where I bought mine and he also rents. I don't have the price sheet. But here is the URL for Scoot Anywhere.

    http://www.scootanywhere.com

    Hope this helps
