  1. Sitting on a very dry Dawn now, alongside in Portland harbour and I can confirm that, as with Southampton on embarcation day, May 4th, no alcohol is being served until we reach "local international waters". I spoke with the Beverage Manager on the 4th and asked what the reason was for this and was simply told Customs and Border Protection regulations. I have not been able to find anything to support this on any UK Gov website. The ban did not occur in any other ports only Southampton and Portland. I have never experienced this on any cruise out of Southampton, my latest was Iona on Feb 28th. The 'all aboard' time tonight is 19.30 so I guess drinks service will commence around 21.00. Considering we disembark tomorrow I imagine it will be a very quiet night! Not blaming anybody here just providing factual, first hand and I hope, helpful information.

I would think you would only get the original cash amount retuned in money. The bonus FCC may be returned as FCC or may be forfeit,

  6. Does anyone have the email address for the Maitre’d on the Princess Star?

We usually sail on Carnival and email the Maitre’d the week before sailing with our requests and always receive them!

Hi hardel, as envy4u says Princess Maitre d' are available to discuss requests on the day of boarding. Normally around 3.00pm. They will usually be in one of the MDRs. You can ask at the Purser's desk (reception) where this will be.

Sometimes you have to take a numbered ticket other times you just queue and wait your turn. If the cruise is sold out there is less room to accommodate if you wish to switch from traditional (fixed time) dining to anytime (freedom) dining or vice versa but the Maitre d' will always do their best to help.

  8. a lil anchor 'science'

A factor in this situation is that the anchor really has little to do with keeping the ship in place. If that was the case one would simply drop the anchor and be done and this IS nearly the case with little boats - you back away a little to dig in the flukes but that's it..you depend on the anchor and the mud. On a ship, when you anchor you KNOW the weight of the anchor or the anchor and mud is NOT going to hold you position for long, you drop the anchor then back away dropping chain - the chain amount is many times the depth of the water ... as much as 5 times or more. It is the resistance of the chain dragging along the bottom, plus the shock absorber effect of the weight of the chain trying to be lifted off the bottom that holds the ship. The anchor is like the anchor man of a tug-o-war team .... helps dig in the end but not usually able to do the job alone.

    ****

and BTW my reply has at best a 10% application to OP's question

    for that I say

    sorry

Tru as was explained to me by the master of Emerald Princess, the anchor anchors the chain and the chain anchors the ship. Useful piece, thank you.

  9. I received an email today from Cruise Critic. Normally I look forward to the informative and sometimes controversial content but this takes the biscuit.

The email was entitled "Cruisers have weighed in on Royal Princess. Agree?"

The first post listed in the email was by jbeall694and was "WhyI will never cruise Princess again, a Gold Card member warns fellow cruisers" it was dated 2014!

This person is (was) claiming to be a Gold Card Member yet had completed six cruises! As I understand it they would have been Ruby by then even if the cruises were 1, 2 or 3 day!

Anyway I digress, why publish a 2014 review from a questionable source in a 2017 email? Cruise Critic you disappoint me, I expect more of you than this, you have a good reputation and publishing a three year old questionable review as your lead in an email to members is not good.

  10. Having requested the new Cruise Atlas several times I finally received the new Fully Inclusive Cruise Brochure but no Atlas.

The covering letter stated that “Senior Management” had decided that the Cruise Atlas would no longer be distributed in the UK!

I am extremely disappointed and annoyed by this decision, yet again we see UK customers being given a worse deal than their US counterparts and treated like the poor relations.

  12. When we were on the Star in April we were in the Skywalkers lounge where they have the Platinum, Elite appies and drinks and they were checking everyone’s cards and those that weren’t platinum & Elite had to go . So I don’t think if ur not platinum or Elite u can’t stay

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It is the Platinum, Elite and Suite Lounge so if you are in a suite it doesn't matter what colour card you have you are allowed in. People tend to forget this when they see people in there with Blue, Ruby and Gold cards, and think they shouldn't be there. Staff would need to check both the colour of your card and your cabin if not Plat or Elite.

  13. Who on earth needs more than 23+5kg?!

23kg for a single item is the health and safety limit set by the airports so you're unlikely to find anywhere that allows higher unless you have multiple cases.

I regularly do up to 10 days hand luggage only. I've even been known to do 7 nights <5kg before. Granted, that wasn't for a cruise though.

I'm fully expecting my case to be ~17kg + hand luggage for my cruise. I just can't understand why you'd need any more than that?

I bet these are the same people who don't understand what "ONE item of hand luggage" means then get outraged when they have to squeeze their handbag in their case at the gate

P.s. I realise this is an ancient topic, but clearly it's still relevant

Surely it depends on the length of the cruise and pre and post cruise arrangements?

I don't know where you are getting your information from on airline baggage because many airlines offer 30Kg per bag in business or first and VAA offer 32 Kg in Upper. In Economy Qantas offer 30Kg, I know this because we are flying back from Sydney with them after our Arcadia Southampton to Sydney cruise next year. They also allow in addition to the one piece of 7Kg another item such as a small handbag or laptop bag which is quite generous for economy.

Trying to accommodate a 44 day cruise and then several days in Sydney with a 30Kg + 7Kg carry on is just about doable but I would struggle with 23Kg for such a long trip.

  14. Originally posted by octoberdana Our next cruise will most likely be on the Ruby or the Regal/Royal.

Just keep in mind that if you choose the Regal or Royal, it's a whole new ballgame for decks and balconies. Caribe deck balconies are no bigger than the rest and most of the balconies are only 4 feet deep, rather than 5.

If a good-sized balcony is important to you, you'll need to book early enough (or get lucky enough) to grab one of the extended/angled balconies around mid-ship or the deluxe obstructed ones up front on Emerald, Lido or Marina.

    Jim

Or one of the aft facing Jim, they too have bigger balconies. We always book a accessible balcony and for us the size of the balconies on Royal class are a killer, hardly room for my wife to get her wheelchair out there.

  15. I'm doing a B2B in November. After the first cruise Nov 25-30 I'll become Platinum. I will stay on the ship from Nov 30-Dec 10. Will I be able to get all the Platinum perks or does it take some time to adjust my status ?

Your status will be recognised immediately you start the second cruise on your B2B, you will be able to use the lounge and should get your free internet minutes.

  16. My DH and I are both platinum, and we do enjoy going to this lounge most nights. Our next cruise in December, we aren't planning on bringing formal wear. Will it be frowned upon if we go to the lounge on formal nights in smart casual clothes? I know it's my vacation and I should do what makes me happy, but just thought I'd see what others thought. Thanks

No problem at all. We have late traditional dining and I have often been in the PES lounge in shorts or jeans and a polo shirt before going back to the cabin to put the DJ on.

  17. Hi pkfamily, read your blog and concur with your comments.

My wife is a full time wheelchair user following a brain heamorrhage in 2007. I am her full time carer.

We cruised on Ventura earlier this year, our first on P&O, all our other cruises have been on Princess. We were happy to book Ventura as she is a sister to Princess Grand Class ships and we had cruised on Star and Emerald so knew the layout would be pretty much the same and the cabins identical.

Your comments about the thresholds where the watertight doors are of particular relevance in my wife's case because they had to remove part of her skull at the rear base and part of the C1 vertibra. These together with the cutting of the muscles and subsequent scaring has left her with a suseptability to jarring which if sever can cause her to be laid up in bed for 24 hours. I have to be very careful when pushing her as to the surface and any inperfections, cobbled areas are no go for us I am afraid. So these threshholds are taken with great care, much to the consternation of fellow passengers who may be following close behind when we suddenly slow down to navigate the bump.

Our next cruise is on Arcadia in January when we will be sailing from Southampton to Sydney, 44 days. We were unable to book a accessible cabin (there are so few and sell out so quickly) so we have booked a Deluxe Balcony on E deck at the stern. My wife will be able to use the wheelchair within the cabin but it probably will not pass through the door so we will have to manage the transition from chair to bed and vice versa when coming and going. Fortunately these cabins have baths and we have requested a bath board and the baths have a shower rose on a hose rather than a fixed head so we can manage her ablutions.

Having also done a little research I was pleased to find out there will be enough room under our bed to store our suitcases (just over 14 inches, our cases are just over 12). I know we had room for this on all our Princess cruises and on Ventura and had read that on some P&O ships there is very little space under the beds. With this being a regular cabin the last thing I wanted was to have the free space cluttered up with luggage.

Our next two cruises after Arcadia are back on Princess and we have booked accessible cabins so back on familiar ground, well deck actually. I would not book a regular cabin on Princess because as you found out on Ventura, the bathroom is totally unsuitable for someone who has difficulty standing and the shower is, quite frankly a joke, even for able bodied people being so small.

Selbourne, agreed with your comments too, particularly the lifts and the attitude of some pax towards wheelchair users. If one more smart ass tells my wife how lucky she is the have a seat and be pushed around I will probably thump them. Like you I agree they should hope they are never so unfortunate as to be put in that position.

We will keep on cruising as long as our bodies and money hold out because I think above all else, in the main, the cruise lines have got it sorted when it comes to wheelchair users.

  18. That last post was from someone using an older list. Posting this to show the correct info for Emerald Princess (which I already did above but...)

  19. The same poster just posted on the CD thread with a quote from 2012!!!!

    :p

I think she had one new thing to add and couldn't find a new list to add it to.

    See: "

"Ruby Princess Nicola Furlan (Feb 1/14) Generoso Mazzone (9-16-2017) "

The list was only seven posts before her post on the same page she must have looked a lot harder to find one from 2014!

I see she was on the Ruby at that time from her signature.

I will add her edit to the latest list.
