Could you share who you are using for your Juneau fishing/whale watching charter?

    Thanks!

I apologize as I am just now seeing this.  I am using Local Guys Charter

We live near Victoria.  If your teens are shoppers, there are quite a few quirky, hip stores in Downtown Victoria. You might also want to take a walk to Fan Tan Alley, "known for being the narrowest commercial street in North America, being less than 0.9 m (3.0 ft) wide at its narrowest point."  The alley is right across from MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op), which is a great outdoors clothes and equipment store (similar to REI in the U.S.), if that's of interest.  You could also stop by the Bard and Banker for a drink and/or snack - it's a pub (all ages) in a former old bank. These are all within walking distance of each other, and unless mobility is an issue, from the ship.

    Hope that helps.

This is so very helpful and I love the narrow street.  Thank you

  3. I am struggling with what to do in each of these ports.  In Santorini I am trying to decide between an all day wine tour or a sunset yacht.  In Rhodes I am not seeing the sunset yacht experience(I don't want a yacht with 60 of my closest friends)  but I do see winery visits to Embonas and some with a cooking class (which I like).  So I guess I am asking, will I be disappointed in not doing the wine tour in Santorini if I choose the Rhodes option?   This will be Sept 20/21.   Yes wine and food are a big focus of all of our vacations but I also have personal recommendations for the sunset yacht and how it was the best tour they have ever done (very well traveled person).

Yellow Jersey bike shop near the harbor in Sitka rents bikes.

Victoria might be your best bet for king crab legs.  Due to the stock collapse they will be very expensive.  I would expect to see prices over $100 per pound.

Thank you for the bike shop and I was afraid of the pricing for King.

Just a quick comment from someone who lives in Alaska — I don’t understand why a tourist would ever need bear spray unless they are doing a remote trek in a place such as the Brooks Range.  Don’t overthink the issue.

Thank you.  I remember when we were in Skagway in 2017 our tour guide had some with him so this makes me feel better that we don't need it if we are just hiking around the Sitka area.

  6. Family of 5 with 3 teen boys 14 and up.  Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Victoria on Quantum mid June 2023.   Juneau we have private salmon/halibut fishing with whale watching.  Skagway renting a jeep and driving on our own.  Looking for:

Sitka:  wanting to just rent bicycles (not e bikes) and see the town on our own or hiking in the area (need bear spray?).   Does anyone know if there is company at the pier, that rents normal bicycles?  If we decide to go hiking on our own, is bear spray needed here like in other parts of Alaska (assuming so).

Victoria:  I have been here, this is a short evening stop.  Any suggestions for something you love with teens?  I really thought this town was charming but all we did was walk around

Crab legs:  Yes I want to eat crab legs (king or snow).  No we aren't going to have time in Juneau.  Will I have any luck in Skagway, Sitka, Victoria?  If you have your favorite stop I would love that suggestion as well.  Yes I know I can eat them at home (I do all the time), I want to eat them in Alaska.   Thanks for the help.

  7. Fantastic review.  I do have 3 questions and am hoping you can answer.

    1. what onboard electricity did you have?  110vs 220?  etc... Just trying to figure out which adapter I need.

    2.  Did you find your evening attire was more casual (as in slacks and a collared shirt) or more dress pants and button down shirts?

    3. how was your connectivity on the ship?  wifi any good? cell coverage?  Just trying to think about family back home and elderly parents.   Thank you again for your review.

  8. You mentioned that your wife was seasick in open waters. Was she taking any medicines to prevent? I have motion sickness but I always take meclizine 24 hrs before start of cruise and throughout. We leave Sun and I am slightly worried about getting sick. I have never gotten sick on any of my previous cruises. THANKS for the quick and to the point review, I enjoyed it.

  9. Ok so I know that this gets a lot of questions, and people get tired of answering them. However, I have looked at multiple threads and can't figure out the answers to my questions.

We set sail Sept 3 for Alaska on the Pearl. We will leave behind young children who expect to facetime/Skype with us every day. On days in port in Alaska we can use our regular data or connect to a ports wifi. In Canada we will connect with a ports wifi. My concern is the days at sea. We don't need to be online any other time other then when we facetime/Skype with them. I know I don't need the daily package and the cheapest data package is $75. This seems like a lot. Is there a pay as you go option? If so does anyone know the cost? Is the internet enough for facetime or Skype. I don't want to pay for it and then not get it to work. If getting in touch is going to be impossible then I need to set that expectation before we leave.

    Thank you

  10. Thank you for all the advice. Our cruise is in Sept so I know we need to be prepared for rain as well as some cooler temperatures. Will be dressing in layers and I am a naturally cold person so I will be bringing my waterproof coat from Columbia. There is a group of 12 of us cruising so we are talking about shipping some of the heavier bulky clothes back and forth. Just didn't know if anyone has actually shipped to the dock.

Thanks to those we gave me their exact departure times and thei experience with the airport.

  11. Hoping I can get some answers.

    1. What time does the boat dock when returning to Seattle? It says 8am but hoping it is earlier

    2. For people carrying off their own luggage, what time did the first people get off?

    3. What does everyone feel like is the earliest possible flight time you could make, if you are off first carrying your luggage with uber waiting.

    4. Has anyone ever shipped Alaska clothes to the dock? Did it make it? Was it easy? Problems? A few of us are considering shipping some of our cold weather clothes instead of checking baggage. Hoping to get some insights.

    Thanks

  12. We are thinking of getting married in Cozumel, possibly at Mr. Sanchos. I'd be interested in knowing more about your sisters wedding- Cost? Location? Who signed the marriage license if they weren't officially married in Mexico?

We went to Mr. Sanchos last week for fun but I can't picture it as a romantic wedding venue although I know it's a common location.

Who was the wedding planner on the island? Thanks!

I honestly don't remember the cost. I do remember both my sister and mom being satisfied that the wedding we got was worth the cost. You can choose a few locations at Mr. Sanchos. She got married in the garden area. It is at the end of the property and overlooks the sand and ocean. It felt very secluded and peaceful. Definitely felt separate from the party area. She did not have a legal wedding, so no marriage license. She was married at home at a separate time. This is what worked for her. The wedding planners were 2 women. We found them on Mr. Sanchos website. I think they were called Cozumel Wedding planner. The communication from home was challenging but they did an amazing job and all of their suggestions were right on. Food was great. My only suggestion is if pictures are a big deal, choose a different photographer. She was ok, just not great. Everything else was amazing. The coordination from the cruise dock was seamless and easy. The day was perfect. Good luck.

  13. This is a question for those people who are sailing to Alaska on the Pearl in May. I am going in Sept and am wondering what the cost of the week long spa pass. I believe many of your 90 day windows have opened so I am hoping you can tell me what cost you are seeing. I have been hearing about a price hike.

    Thank you and happy sailing.

  14. Hello! This makes me so excited for my wedding! We will be going on the Carnival Cruise Fantasy. We have selected the basic package. No reception. Would you say the reception part was worth it? Did you/ your sister have an reception. My wedding will most likely be in the morning 10-11am. I will be having a minister at the wedding we will have a civil and religious wedding. Is that something your sister did? Did your sister get her marriage license through Mexico or before she left the states, where I believe it is 15 days before sailing we have to send our blood test from the doctor to them. After the wedding does the resort let you stay there or do you have to leave right way? Also going back to the ship the transportation we pre paid for that was for round trip correct? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!
Congrats on the upcoming wedding. Yes my sister did have a reception. Yes it was most definitely worth it. The decorations, food, open bar was fantastic. The food and decorations blew us away, considering we were going in blind. My sister just had a religious ceremony as the process of getting legally married in Mexico is not easy. The resort did let us stay if we wanted to, but since we had a reception and were there for 4 hours everyone was ready to go back to the ship. It was warm and the tent we had up was definitely needed. We were there in Feb. Also our transportation was roundtrip, but I don't know if that means yours is roundtrip. As a side note we got the pictures back and I remember my sister was ok with the pictures. There were a lot taken, but there was some issues with some of them. Overall the were satisfactory but have definitely seen better photography elsewhere. I can't remember if my sister was happy with the video. I know she wasn't disappointed, I just can't remember if she thought it was exceptional. Good luck with the planning, they really did a great job.
  15. We are on NCL Pearl in Sept and I am wondering what kind of coverage we will get. I looked at the map and the coverage looks good in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Can anyone confirm? We will need to be calling home or facetiming home. Can anyone tell me what kind of service they had while cruising the inside pass and glacier bay. We will need to be calling or facetiming again. I want to try to avoid using cruise ship wifi as I know it is usually a struggle, so we will use our data. Thanks
