I was on Enchanted 5/27-6/10/23, Barcelona to Athens. Day 5 (Genoa, Italy) I started with a head cold coughing, sneezing, etc. @ day I felt  a little worse. Husband went to medical center told them of symptoms gave some DM cough syrup. Fast forward to day 11 went to medical center was diagnosed w/ pneumonia in right lung. Spent 30 hours in medical center getting medication intravenously and put on oxygen. Oxygen level was in high eighties. DR said if I didn’t improve overnight I would be ambulanced off ship to hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Luckily I improved. Was confined to my stateroom on oxygen remainder of cruise. Finally got my oxygen up to 95 so was able to fly home. The medical staff was fantastic did everything in their power to get me better. I give the staff high praise.

on day six the captain announced something was going around ship and suggested masking up. I feel the crew knew a virus was going around and should have commented sooner.

the DR’s said the influenza is going around Europe and Asia.

    take all precautions!

I am so sorry to hear that you went thru this.  I tried to warn people without being an alarmist.   You are so right that something should  have been announced sooner.  When I was in ship medical center on MAY 12 diagnosed with iNFLUENZA A, doctor said that something was going around the ship and also said flu is all over Europe.   I am glad you were able to get home without having to go to hospital in Turkey.   What a terrible way to spend a vacation.  For us it was a once in a lifetime trip.  Hope you are doing well now.   My husband is still feeling fatigue and coughing.

Did a double-take when I saw the topic.  Type A flu in Europe in the summer?  If the diagnosis is accurate than that may not bode well for next fall/winter's flu season :(.

    Hank

Hank I saw the test result myself and it was clearly positive for Influenza type A.    That was on May 12.

Curious question - do they quarantine you with the flu?  and since your hubby had it so long did they test for C-19?

    Dar and Bob.

We took covid tests 2 times in our cabin so we knew we did not have covid.    We told that to the clinic nurse  and they did not test for covid.    The nurse immediately tested my husband for flu.   And yes, once it was positive for influenza A  the doctor put us in quarantine.    However we were disembarking the next day so we were only quarantined for one day.   The ship doctor told us if we had covid he would have  to report it to Italy and we would have to be quarantined  in Italy.   However Italy is not concerned about the flu since there are many people walking around Italy with the flu!   We thought that was strange but we spent the next 8 days in Italy and there were people coughing and sneezing wherever we went.

Here’s a fun fact about the annual flu shot. I’ve been taking them annually since I joined the military back in 1971 and every year since then, to include the latest one last fall. The last time I got the flu was when I was in high school. Just saying ….

I am with you Ken, I worked in health care and have had a flu shot every year since 1976.  Neve got the flu until this trip!   And like I said it was pretty mild.

Maybe, I am not sure how long they are supposed to last.

All I know is I got my flu shot last September in California and it definitely protected me from getting very sick.   There were only 2 days where I felt I needed to rest.    My husband (no flu shot) had fever, fatigued every day, excessive coughing up etc, for three weeks.

Also I would say SargassoPirate gave great advice to future cruisers.    Let me add, if you choose to use the steps try not to hold the handrails and if you do make sure you use the hand gel which is located all over the ship.

Thank you for the heads up.

I’m curious if you both happen to get this seasons flu vaccine as it was designed for

    type A/Victoria/2570/2019 (H1N1)pdm09?

Not bringing it up for any other reason other than your title said type A and just was wondering if this seasons vaccine helped or not?

    cheers

AZjohn, Great question!  I got the flu vaccine this season, as I always do.   My husband did not get the vaccine.  I had a mild case and was better in three days.   My husband, on the other hand, had a bad case with fever  and all the flu symptoms which continued for the following two weeks of our travels through Italy and Switzerland.   Even when we got home last week he continues to be fatigued every day.   It really knocked him out.     I would say the flu vaccine definitely helped me!   Enjoy your cruise.

  7. I was on Enchanted May 6 to 13.   Beautiful ship, great food and staff.  Unfortunately my husband and I caught the flu onboard midway thru our cruise.    There were many people in the sick bay and many others coughing around the ship.    Apparently from some recent facebook posts the bug continues to circulate.   My only reason for this post is to warn guests who will be boarding soon to be extra careful.  I would hate for for any of you to end up sick as we did.   Also when packing bring cold and flu medicine because it was very hard to get the right medicine in the foreign country and it was  very expensive to visit the medical center on board..   Have a wonderful trip!    It is truly a great experience if you are not sick!

  8. Need help logging into the Medallion ap for my husband.   I have logged into the app and entered information without trouble.  My husband is not able to get on the app   He tries logging in using the booking number but it doesn't work. He get a response unable to ....  Then he tried creating a new account and that doesn't work either.  What are we missing?   Can someone please advise if there is a special way for the second person in the room to get on the app.

  9. I will be stopping at Gibraltar o May 8th from a Princess cruise.  This thread has been very helpful.  I am trying to get more information about getting around Gibraltar after I get off the ship.  Sounds like taking the cable car is not a good option for us because of all the walking.  I do want to take a rock tour of the key sites including the WW2 tunnels.  How reliable are the vans, taxis by the cruise terminal.  Are they always there?      Would I be better off booking a tour in advance.    There are some tours offered on TripAdvisor by Blands travel.   Does anyone know anything abouts Blands?      Would appreciate your advice.

  10. Was the club class dining experience and food choices much better than regular service?  What were other benefits of Club Class that made it special for you?   We are booked on Club Class mini on Enchanted May 6, 2023.   I didn't feel we needed to go CC but my husband insisted.  I am looking to understand what to expect.   Our last cruise was 6 years ago.

  11. If you selected anytime dining can you make reservations for dinner? If you can, do you have to go to the restaurant to make the reservation or can you just call to reserve? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to go about this to ensure you get a good reservation? I am leaving on the Grand Saturday for Mexican Riviera. thanks
