Fabulous. Thank you, Jeff. I always love it when it is show and tell.

Here is a question for everybody else. Did you all dock in Tarascon? Viking likes to change things up. Or maybe it is the river master who does it.

When we did the Avignon to Lyon Viking Cruise in 2015, the ship tied up in Tarascon and we were taken by bus to Arles. Wasn't a lengthy bus ride, and Arles is an interesting place to walk-about.

The older I get, the more useless I am on day one. Arriving early is becoming more and more of a necessity rather than an indulgence.

For those who might want to try to to Ponte du Gard on their own (and there is now an optional tour listed), do you remember what it cost you?

The current entry price is 8.50 euros - you can find the price on their website at;  https://billetterie.pontdugard.fr/en-GB/products

My family and I drove there from Carcassonne (on our way to Annecy) and enjoyed our visit. Pont du Gard is a living monument to Roman Construction standards!

  3. My wife and in-laws took this cruise in 2015, see http://www.lipfordfamilyadventures.com/2015_france_adventure.php for a complete narrative and pics we took.

There are some "gotchas" on the Rhone River Cruise - perhaps the biggest one is that most of the bridges are too low for the boat to have the sun deck open for use. As compared to the River Seine cruise, where the sun deck was constantly open for use.

The other gotcha is the time of year - France has a definite winter, and cruising in April you are likely to find it chilly. Dress accordingly and it isn't a problem.

  4. My wife and my in-laws (and me) took this cruise in 2014 (for a complete post of our trip, see http://www.lipfordfamilyadventures.com/2014_river_seine_cruise.php ) and for our perspective on Viking, go here; http://www.lipfordfamilyadventures.com/viking_overview.php.

Of the two Viking River Cruises we have taken, the trip to Normandy from Paris was our favorite. The Seine is wide, the bridges are tall enough for the boat's sun deck to be in the usable position, etc.

The food was excellent, and the wine selections were great.

We went on the Invasion Beaches day trip, and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

  5. We also did the Viking River Cruise to Lyon in 2015 (and to view our complete blog, go here http://www.lipfordfamilyadventures.com/2015_france_adventure.php) or to read our perspective on Viking River Cruises, go here; http://www.lipfordfamilyadventures.com/viking_overview.php.

We did not find any day trip on that route to require exertion, were there some steep walks?  Yes, but no steeper than the stairs on the boat !

Day trips were excellent, food was great and the wine choices were awesome.
