  1. Just one more thought about getting from Newark to the hotel at 50th and Lex. If you take the train, you can pop into the 8th ave uptown subway at NY Penn station and take the E train uptown to Lexington & 53rd. That way you don't have to walk the 10 blocks from the airport bus drop off point at Grand Central. This could be a faster route and better in bad weather.

Great tip! Would have needed a foot massage after that! 😃 thanks.

  2. What day of the week are you going to Cape Liberty?

Airport bus to Grand Central may be the most direct and easiest option to get back to the city.

To get to the port I would take a cab to JCPenneys at 32nd and 6th. Do not attempt the subway with luggage! This should be about $15. The accessible PATH entrance is just to the left of Penney's. You take PATH to Hoboken - $2.75/pp. At Hoboken you take the elevator up to the street/train station level. The light rail is on the far left. You buy tickets in the machine and validate them. Fare is $2.10, children under 12 are $1.05. Take the light rail to 34th Street in Bayonne and call a local taxi to go into the port. This may cost $4-5/pp. Call the cab companies for a quote.

PATH and the light rail should be uncrowded outbound in the morning. There are great views of NYC from the Hoboken station area. Light rail is surface transportation so fun for the kids. I'd plan to leave by 9:30 am. Total time with transfers and connections should be less than 1 1/2 hours.

    Thank you so much!

We're leaving on Thursday June 4th sailing liberty of the seas.

  3. Newark has two train stations - Newark Liberty International Station and Newark Penn Station. The airport station is accessible only from the Airtrain from the airport terminals and rental cars. http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/AirTrain-Map.pdf

There are two train services that run through these stations - Amtrak and NJ Transit. Amtrak is long distance service and NJ Transit is local service. The local service is $12.50/pp to NYC from the airport. Amtrak is in the $50 range.

Where is your hotel in NYC? That is important to know. The train will leave you at New York Penn Station around 32nd and 8th. The airport bus ($16-17) will drop you at Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd & 8th), Bryant Park (5th & 42nd) or Grand Central (41st between Park & lexington). So if your hotel is near one of the bus stops, you should consider the airport bus option.

If your hotel is downtown there are other options. Train from the airport to Newark Penn Station is $8.25. Bus 62 from the airport to Newark Penn Station is $2.35. From Newark Penn Station you can take PATH directly to downtown Manhattan or with a transfer to midtown Manhattan (34th & 6th) with stops along 6th Ave.

Bottom line - it depends where you're going and how much time and money you want to spend or don't want to spend.

Thanks Carol, you're better than Google! 😉

We're staying at the doubletree on Lexington and 50th. 569 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022

Going back to the hotel will be easier because it'll just be me without bags. Cheapest way is great.

However going to Cape liberty with the family and luggage is a bit tougher. I don't want to take a car service, but I'm thinking the least amount of transfers is probably best.

Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Rob

  4. You have a choice of train or airport bus from the airport. NJTransit stops at the Newark Airport station and costs $12.50 to go to NY Penn Station. You take the free Airtrain to get from your terminal to the airport train station.

The airport bus stops at each terminal and costs $16-17. This will take you to Port Authority where you can walk one avenue to Times Square. http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.details.asp?action=Lookup&c1=Newark+Liberty+Airport&s1=NJ&c2=New+York&s2=NY&resultId=105245&order=&dayFilter=&scheduleChoice=&sitePageName=%2Findex%2Easp&cbid=191312248009

At 8 am in a Thurs, train might be a better choice because it is not subject to any traffic delays going into NYC via the Lincoln tunnel. It is about a 10 block walk up to Times Square.

Train fare is only $5 from Newark Penn Station to NY Penn Station, but you have to take a local bus to do this. This could be more awkward at rush hour with luggage. If this is of interest I will look up the bus number.

    Hi Carol.

First of all thank you so much for your help. Just to clarify, the NJ Transit and the Newark Penn are 2 different different trains?

I need to get from Newark Airport to Manhatten. I'm dropping off my family at the hotel and then going to the airport to return the rental car. So I'll be by myself going back to Manhatten.

After a few days in Manhatten we'll be off to Cape liberty for the cruise on the Liberty!

    Thanks for your help!

    Rob

  5. Hello all,

So what is the advice on getting from EWR to Port Liberty for 4 of us, cab or car service?

    Thanks

Some family and friends of ours are flying into EWR and then going to the port. They booked the shuttle service directly from RCI for $28.50 per person each way. Might be a little pricey compared to other means of transportation, but they are elderly and I think it's the most convenient for them. Hope that helps.

  6. You have several options from New York City to Cape Liberty. Do you know where you are staying in Manhattan? Can you manage your luggage?

    1) Car service like Dial7 or Carmelimo - in the $100 range.

2).PATH from Herald Square (33rd & 6th) to Hoboken. Accessible entrance next to Penneys on 6th Ave between 32nd and 33rd St. Fare is $2.75, children 5 and under free. Elevator up to the street/station level in Hoboken. Light rail is on the far left of the train platforms. Buy a ticket from the machines $2.10 for adults, $1.05 for children 5-11. Take the train to Bayonne 34th Street. Call a cab to get into the port. No free shuttle.

Don't know what the cab will charge for 4 people, but it should be about $16.

This could be a fun ride for the kids. Outbound trains are uncrowded in the mornings, so seats and luggage are not an issue.

Thank you so much for the info. This really helps!

    Life's short, cruise more!

  7. Hi everyone!

We are on the June 4th RCI liberty of the seas cruise. We're super excited but it's our first time out of Cape liberty. We're coming in a couple days earlier to visit NYC, but I'm not sure what's the easiest and cheapest way to get from Manhattan to the port. We have 2 kids, 5 and 9, but we have no problem taking the train. I read on some older forums that RCI offers complimentary shuttles from the Bayonne train station to Cape liberty. However I think that's old information, can anyone confirm that?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Cruise cruise cruise! :)
