  1. Where do you host your photos? Getting the photo link varies from host to host. Once you have the link, you use the little Mountain icon to pop up the box to paste it into.

My photos are posted online in Picasa (Google+). I copied the URL and pasted into the box in CC but it just showed a tiny icon and not the picture. When I posted, the photo didn't show up at all.

  2. No worries. You are not alone!

I have found that when you misspell a word in the title and don't see it before you post, you live with it forever. :)

    Live and learn.

Dave, could you refresh my memory as to how to post photos here? As I remember it wasn't quite as easy as it is on other forums or on Facebook.

    Thanks,

  3. Thank you for the wonderful review of your trip. Can I ask a question about your time in BC? Did you need to exchange currency (if so where did you do this)? If you used a credit card, is one better than another for fees, ie. Chase vs Citi? Debit vs credit? Thanks to anyone who has good information.

There is no need to get any Canadian currency for your visit to Victoria. American $$ are accepted with no problems. I guess it would be best to check with your credit card companies to see which gives you the best rate in Canada. We didn't use a credit card there.

  4. I would check with SW and to be certain that you are FULLY approved and registered for Senior Fares. If you are, I agree that you should not have any problems with the luggage service. If SW tells you that you are not properly pre-registered for Senior Fares, it could explain the issue. Just a thought.

I am Singinman's wife. I understand the need to prove that you qualify for a senior fare and we did that when we flew out to Seattle. There should have been no need to present proof again on the return flight. We paid the fee for early check-in for our return flight and we had very good positions (A16 and A17). The problem was that the check-in agent said that the papers printed by the kiosk were boarding passes and they were not. We didn't discover this until we tried to board the plane. Then we lost our place in line and had to return to the customer service rep to check in. Fortunately we were able to get decent seats but we were not together on the flight.

Apparently SW did not register the fact that we had proved our age on the flight to Seattle so we were required to show proof of age again on the return flight. I assumed that we were cleared but it is obvious that we were not. I learned a lesson: never believe what you are told without checking it out yourself.

If anyone needs the luggage direct program it is senior adults. It is very difficult for me to navigate the airport with a large suitcase and 2 carry-ons and I don't really have a mobility problem. There were many people on our cruise with mobility problems.

BYW, we were properly pre-registered for senior fares. We made our reservations through our TA and she took care of that. We also did the early bird check-in 24 hours before the flight to Seattle and checked in with proof of age at the Norfolk airport.

  5. How would Mom get the car? With the late hours in port, there is no time to get a car from the airport.

I realize that you are not interested in this option but FYI the rental car agency is at the pier not at the airport.

I am sorry that I misunderstood you. I thought that you wanted more time at Mendenhall so that you could do more while you are there. Apparently others thought the same thing. Several of us offered you alternatives to make better use of your time in port. I was speaking from person experience and that is what Cruise Critic is all about: experienced cruisers sharing their experience with people new to cruising or new to an itinerary.

    Have a wonderful cruise.

  6. BQ has a great suggestion. A rental car would allow you to start earlier and visit everything on the tour. It would be cheaper in the long run and would offer much more flexibility. We have rented from Juneau Rental Car and it worked out very well. Unfortunately because of a change of itinerary we had to cancel the rental car on our upcoming cruise but it was going to cost us less than $70.

  7. We couldn't get nearly that close since it would have involved swimming :D This is what it looked like for us:

We had about 2 hours in the park, and it wasn't enough...I wish we had more time for the visitor center.

WOW! The water wasn't nearly that high when we were there in 2011. You could walk right up to the waterfall and climb up the side.

  8. I couldn't imagine being on a strict time schedule there. Everyone has their own time frame and catching your own way back makes the most sense. Looking forward to our first visit to Alaska. I know there will be a second that includes Tracy Arm.

This will be our 3rd attempt at Tracy Arm. I hope we get to Sawyer Glacier this time. There was too much ice before.

  9. If Mendenhall is the last stop on your tour and you have time you could just stay there and catch a shuttle back to the ship. I think you can get a one-way ticket for $10. You might also want to reconsider the tour and just take the $20 bus to Mendenhall and spend more time there. There is a fee for the visitor center unless you are on a tour or have a National Park Service pass of some kind. We have lifetime senior passes that we got in Ketchikan on our first AK cruise. There are several places where you can use them in AK. You only need one pass per family.

We leave tomorrow for Seattle and our cruise on Monday.

  10. They both go to Glacier Bay ... at least in 2015. Hubbard southbound, College Fjord northbound. I think it's the same next year.

If that is the case, then I would do the southbound itinerary. Hubbard Glacier would provide a much different experience from either Glacier Bay or College Fjord.

  11. Thanks Judy. You truly are a wealth of knowledge. I had wondered why the eagle was OK to let another bird sit by so closely.

Thanks. We have quite a few eagles around here and photographers are always posting pictures of eagles on Facebook on the Virginia Photographers page. Some of them are lucky enough to have eagles nesting in there back yards. They are beautiful and majestic birds and wonderful parents.

I just alerted my DH to your review and I am sure that he is reading it right now. We will be on our way to Seattle next Sunday to begin our cruise.

  12. We did the rafting trip out of Haines and loved it. The scenery was beautiful and the rafting was fun. However, we were docked in Haines so we didn't have the long ferry ride from Skagway and back. It was a fairly long bus ride to the beginning of the rafting trip and a shorter bus ride back to the ship. If you had to add the travel time to and from Haines on the ferry to the trip that would make the travel longer than the time on the water. I'm not sure it would be worth it.

  13. It will be cold near the glaciers. Remember, the temps given by the weather guessers are the highs for the day. If you are there early in the day or late afternoon it will be a lot colder. Even so, I have seen people in everything from shorts and t-shirts to heavy parkas. I think gloves and ear coverings are a must because the wind can really chill you if your hands and head are cold. I don't know about you, but I am pretty miserable if I am cold.

  14. I didn't bring a tripod on the last trip but I saw others with them on the upper decks. I plan to be out on deck most of the day. Still debating whether to pack one or not or just have the camera around my deck or in my hands.

One thing to remember: if you use a tripod on deck you are taking up the space of 3 people. Unless you find an isolated spot (not likely on glacier day) the tripod would be a tripping hazard for others and possibly a danger for your camera. My DH took a tripod on a couple of AK cruises and used it one time in Glacier Bay. He managed to find a good spot on the Lido deck and wasn't in anyone's way. It would never have worked if he tried to set up on the bow on a HAL ship. He never used it the 2nd time and didn't take it on our other AK cruises.

  15. A HUGE THANK YOU for this information. I have been trying to insert photos in my posts and have had no luck what so ever. Other posters told me to us "Bucket Photos". It didn't work for me. Picasa and the process sound so much easier. Again - Thank you. Can hardly wait to give it a try.

You are welcome, Okie 1946. I hope it works well for you. If it does, be sure to print out the instructions for later reference. As they say, how soon we forget!
