  1. We are doing two 7 night back to back cruises on Summit in November from San Juan

Could you let me know how many Elegant evenings you had? It says for 7 night cruises, there will be 1 or 2 nights, however we’re travelling from the U.K. and I could really do with knowing whether we’ll have 2 or 4 as it makes a big difference to my packing allowance!

    Thanks

  2. I think I've figured out that we are probably two people separated by a common language;)

To me in standard USA usage "buttoned down shirt" means that the collar points are attached to the shirt with buttons (and there may or may not be a button attaching the edge of the collar to the back of the shirt); I consider these shirts to be less formal than shirts that are not "buttoned down".

Are you referring to a shirt that has buttons on the front of the shirt (versus a pull over shirt)? If I had a name for that, it would be a "buttoned up shirt". I am not claiming logic for any of this - just musing over differences in language.

Most of the shirts I take on a cruise are both buttoned up the front and also have buttoned down collars. On more formal nights I typically wear a buttoned up and down:p oxford cloth shirt with a blazer. This is "acceptable" to the woman I am most concerned with (even though she would prefer to have me bring my tux), and perhaps is not too offensive to those dressing at both the high and low ends of formal.

    Thom

Oh I see, DH has both and yes the 'button up' has buttons that attach the collar to the shirt ... your right I consider them to be less formal. I don't even think we differentiate in the UK, although I could be wrong on this one. We would call a shirt that goes over your head a 'polo shirt'.

I could live with him dressing that way on formal night .... don't tell him though :p

  3. Just sharing what we were given when our cruise was cancelled.

We always take out travel insurance, which would have covered us for a flight back home. However, they would simply have put us on the next available flight home, whereas we made the decision to continue with our honeymoon.

I Just feel that the cruisers here had a much worse experience than we did

  4. They received a 100% refund for this cruise and 50% off a future cruise. Is that not enough????????

I was purely letting people know what we were given.

I'm sure there were many people from the UK aboard and as a lot of tickets are non-changeable, it will cost $$$ for them to get home. It is more than possible that the refund does not cover their additional expenses (it certainly didn't ours). Baring this in mind, it's also quite possible that the 50% wont be used, as passengers may not be able to afford the 50% they have to pay, plus flights, hotels etc. So these people will have used their holiday time and arrived back home having had no break.

We have since sung Celebrity's praises, things happen in all walks of life, it's how they handle it that matters.

Why shouldn't they get a free cruise after what they have been through?

    Just my personal opinion

  5. I'm curious as to how many men even take a single buttoned down shirt on a cruise.

I love dressing up, my DH indulges me and wears his tux, but it doesn't bother me what other people wear, I just want thenice pics :-)

We were once invited to dine with the Captain on formal night (this was celebrity), everyone at the table looked lovely, apart from one person. A middle aged gentleman at the table was wearing a jumper that looked like the dog that slept on it, I kid you not, it even had holes at the elbow!! Again didn't bother me, but he did stand out from the rest of the table.

  6. I posted this on another of the threads, thought it worth posting here too

I really feel for you all, I would have been in bits and want off pdq. That said I can understand that it will take some time for rccl to arrange.

However I am quite surprised that they are only giving you 50% off your next cruise.

We were due to sail with Celebrity a few years ago, from LA to Hawaii for our honeymoon, when 2 days prior to sailing the cruise was cancelled due to technical issues.

We were already in Mexico, leaving 24 hours later for LA and as we are from the UK were a long way from home. It was also an Easter weekend, so getting any flight was almost impossible. Therefore, we tried to make the changes as simple as possible. We flew to LA as planned, then flew to Honolulu and stayed there for 2 weeks in a hotel rather than a ship!

That afternoon, with my new husband trying to placate me at having our cruise cancelled, we thought we would relax and go snorkelling. Long story short, I broke my arm, so we didn't have the best of days!

The point of the message, though is this. Everyone on board was given a full refund, although as I recall it did take a few weeks to come through, AND a 100% free cruise, in the same category of cabin. It was rather nice to have a free 2 week cruise, in a suite, for 14 nights in the med the following summer.

Personally, I think rccl should do the same for you guys.

Good luck guys, thinking of you all

  8. My parents went on a cruise with P&O on Britannia last year, having previously sailed with Celebrity many times, on numerous ship.

They loved the ship and said it was the best they have ever sailed on, in fact today they have just booked another cruise, this time on Arcadia.

  9. Hi Guys

I don't know how I could get this to work, but I am very open to suggestions!

My parents have a cruise booked in June with Barcelona being one of the ports. It will be their actual Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years!) when they are there. I also took them to Barcelona as a surprise for their Golden Anniversary so it's quite a special place for us all.

I would love to be able to fly over and surprise them but I have no idea how I could do this.

My only thought was to book them a nice restaurant to go to for lunch.

    Thank you x

  10. My parents have today booked a 14 night cruise leaving on 13th June, the cost for an unobstructed balcony was roughly £2400 pp

They will actually be on-board when they celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary ... quite an achievement in this day and age

They cruised extensively until a few years ago when it became stressful for them negotiating airports etc. but this cruise is perfect as I can take them and pick them up from Southampton.

  11. Oh you lucky lucky people! The penthouse is beautiful on X! We had a few nice times in there last year and oh, its just lovely... I went back to my little suite and felt it was a cupboard:D

The funny thing is, the couple who had the penthouse, we met up with them and didnt know they had the penthouse. We had all had a fabulous night in the disco, and we invited them to join us at our dinner in the speciality restaurant the following night. They were SO pleased. They were very shy in telling us they had the penthouse, they invited us for drinks there first (in fact they said "come to 6147") and were so pleased we had fallen in love with THEM, not their $$$$

We did all dine together on Captains table. It was funny, coz the social climbers at the table were none of those who were in suites. All the suite people on X, were full of fun and not snobbery at all... so good point!

It is a beautiful suite - I really hope we can repeat the experience at some point in the future.

I did have to laugh though, on our first night it was open seating in the dining room and we were seated with 2 ladies who must have told everyone many many times that they were in a Royal Suite. They questioned everyone about their own cabins and then regaled each and every one with how they were in a Royal Suite, including how much it cost etc. All I said was we are on Deck 6 near the back and wouldn't be drawn any further. Anyway later that night, as we were going into our suite as this lady came out of hers 2 doors away from us .... her face was an absolute picture when she realised we were in the Penthouse.

But yes, you shoudl like people for who they are not for the amount of $$ they do or don't have.

  12. NO NO NO NO NO ... We always cruise in a Suite and there is no way I want to be noticeable as such once we are outside of our suite.

We sailed in the Penthouse Suite on X and we didn't mention it at all at our dinner table. However half way through the cruise, it did get mentioned and from that moment on one of our fellow tablemates was a pain with his "jokes" such as "it's alright for them they have loads of money" etc etc etc.

  13. We have cruised with our two boys who are now 16 since they were very young, so they have probably been in every age category.

They personally like the X and RCI kids programmes. They felt that X in particular were very organised and the activities very well run. They ate with us in the main dining room approx half the time, spending the other evenings eating with friends in other locations.

Our two are very sociable, so I would say the only downside is that you don't seem to get much 'family time' together, as they are always so busy with activities, meeting up with friends etc. That said my priority is that they have a good holiday and they certainly do.

I wouldn't hesitate to sail on X or RCI with children, certainly do not belief that X are not child friendly,as they most certainly are.

Obviously if you cruise outside of school vacation time, there will be less children and less activities; My parents did a transatlantic on Connie and there were literally about 20 kids onboard. We have never taken them out of school, so on Mille for example there were probably 300 children of various ages.

Be very very careful ....... our 2 are addicted to cruising and it's an expensive 'hobby'. I think they'll have an awful shock when they go back-packing etc in a couple of years :D

  14. Ian

Nice to 'see' you again, it seems so long since our Millennium cruise. We are booked on IOS in August, a few weeks before your September sailing, in fact my parents are on the same sailing as you though.

Has anyone stayed in an OS ? If so, what was it like and are there are pics?

We have sailed X and RCI numerous times. It isn't the same experience and you have to accept that when booking, however that is not to say it is a worse experience, just different in many ways.

A holiday is what you make it and mine are always fabulous :D

  15. We cruised on Brilliance earlier this month with our 2 boys aged 13 and 14. They have cruised with us before on Celebrity and they felt that X were much better organised.

On several occasions they would turn up for an evening activity to find that no-one was there from the ships staff, this obviously led to a lot of bored kids who had been looking forward to an event. RCI has come under a lot of stick for unruly children/teens onboard however if they cancel programmes at the last minute, this will certainly contribute.

On a few occasions when I went up to check on them there was no-one present from the adventure staff, so I would concur with the previous poster that the teens and younger groups are often left unsupervised.

That said, our boys are very sensible and had a fabulous time.
