Hi Canadian TwoSome! I realize you posted quite some time ago, but we are confident others have the same question, so we are delighted to answer. By car, it takes approximately 3.5 hours from Samana to Puerto Plata (205.3 km).

  7. Has anyone done any of the Carnival excursions in La Romana? There just doesn't seem to be much information on what to do in this port. I have never been to the Dominican Republic, so I would like to do something, so I could see the area at least. A lot of the options don't seem to have the greatest reviews, so I am just wondering what people are recommending.

  8. Looking for suggestions on what to do when our cruise ship anchors in Samana Bay in a few weeks. It is whale season so we are thinking of doing an excursion on a smaller ship to whale watch. However, I've read that the Bay can get very rough and that too many boats search the elusive whales and the boat traffic can be too much. Now, I'm wondering if our cruise ship is at anchor in the bay, might we be better off whale watching from our veranda?

We spent a week in DR but it was a few decades ago. Perhaps there is something else that is a "must see". the national park? a waterfall? We are from Florida so beaches normally aren't thrilling to us.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi Sansterre! We believe you already traveled to the Dominican Republic, but thought we would answer your questions for others with the same question. Whale watching in Samana Bay is absolutely breathtaking and well worth participating in. We have included a link below, so you can learn more. 11. We will be on The Gem in a couple weeks (yay!) and cannot get much info on Samana. The board on the Port of Call section has precious little activity and time is ticking. We are hearing and reading accounts that are making us feel that safety issues may trump our desire to go the rainforest (or otherwise disembark the ship in port) but ..... complaints are always more prevalent than praise, so would like to get as much input as possible. Can you chime in and help? Thx!

We realize your post originated in 2014, but in hopes of assisting others that would like to know a bit about Samana, we are happy to share information about the very popular Whale Watching excursion that takes place January - March in Samana Bay below.

  12. We are booked on the Fantasy in October and will be the 2nd ship to port at Amber Cove. When we booked this cruise our rate was $440. Last week the ship sold out and those rooms we booked were selling at $839. I guess a lot of folks are as anxious as we are to check out the new destination.

You are correct, a great deal of money is being spent, and Carnival is sending their own line, as well as their new FATHOM line to Amber Cove, beginning in October, 2015. I have added a couple links below, I hope you find informative.

  13. interesting article, thanks for posting...

though the first line, 'For a company that prefers not to be in cruise port development, Carnival Corp. is sure spending a lot to build the Amber Cove project in the Dominican Republic's Puerto Plata region.', kinda had me scratching my head - where have they been? half moon cay, grand turk, mahogany bay, among others, etc. - carnival seems to love cruise port development recently...

those 'waterfront' cabanas look really cool - reminds me of developments in tahiti:

  14. Just a bit of info that Carnival just sent out today regarding this port

We're excited to share that Amber Cove - a NEW destination in the heart of the Dominican Republic's breathtaking North Coast, will welcome its first cruise ship when the Carnival Victory arrives on October 6, 2015.

This much-anticipated Caribbean destination gives you a new selling point for enticing your tried-and-true Caribbean cruisers looking for a different destination to visit - and is equally attractive for cruise rookies as well! Designed to serve as the gateway to one of the world's most beautiful cruising regions, Amber Cove features dramatic architectural elements that echo the area's storied Colonial past. The port is situated in a picturesque cove that serves as the backdrop for soaring mountains and lush tropical landscape. Its cobblestone plazas will be lined with a wide variety of retail offerings, including themed restaurants and bars and a marketplace with locally sourced crafts and souvenirs, recreational amenities, and a transportation center for access to land and sea adventures.

In addition, Amber Cove will feature:

    • One of the most extensive shore excursion programs available in the Caribbean, offering a wide array of landside experiences including beautiful beaches, exciting water sports and special culinary, cultural and adventure options. Nearby Ocean World, which is one of the region's largest marine adventure parks, will offer guests many great ways to experience and interact with a variety of marine animals.

    • Dozens of shore excursions will be available, from cross-country adventures in 4x4 Terracross buggies that traverse the rugged countryside and horseback riding on the beach to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters and swimming in a pristine natural river pool. Guests can also travel via speedboat to beautiful Paradise Island, one of the Caribbean's top spots for snorkeling and scuba diving, or visit rural coffee plantations and sample traditional Dominican cuisine, rum and seasonal fruit. Or for the ultimate luxury experience, guests can reserve their own private beachside bungalow with the services of a personal chef, bartender and staff.

    • Amber Cove will also provide easy and convenient access to the nearby historic town of Puerto Plata, named by Christopher Columbus when he discovered the island in 1492. Puerto Plata is home to the first fort built by European settlers in the New World. Visitors to the city can shop in the bustling downtown area featuring numerous artist studios and rum and cigar factories or stroll along the famed Malecon, a three-mile-long open air beach-side boardwalk dotted with bars, restaurants and shops.

Amber Cove will be a featured port on select sailings of Carnival Breeze, Carnival Glory, Carnival Splendor and Carnival Victory from Miami, Carnival Conquest from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Valor from Port Canaveral, Fla., and Carnival Fantasy from Charleston, S.C. To learn more, visit GoCCL.com

    Great information!

If anyone is interested, I have included additional links below regarding Amber Cove, CCL and FATHOM™, which is the new Impact Travel cruise line by CCL that will begin arriving to Amber Cove in March, 2016.

  15. I saw in a Puerto Plata English Newspaper that the opening might be delayed because a widening Program from 2 to 4 lanes for about 4 or 5 KM only about 25-30% is leveled now as of 3 hours ago when i passed on a bus, with only 96 days to go if because of the traffic that will generate when the ship arrives most of the tourist attractions you want to go to are in that direction.

this is the main road to Santiago & Santo Domingo the 2 largest cities in RD

Hello. We have done a great deal of research, and the delay was a concern. However, as of today, the opening is still on schedule. Feel free to read the following articles about Amber Cove, CCL and Fathom, as well as the Top 10 Things To Do in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

  16. There was quite a bit of info on it on the Fathom unveiling that Carnival (CCL) did some months back. I didn't realize the other sub brands were also going to use it.

We must say, this is a very exciting time for Puerto Plata, as well as the Carnival Cruise line. :-)

  17. I just noticed Nieuw Amsterdam has an itinerary in 2016 that calls at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic. This is the first I've heard of it but think it probably is a Carnival created cruise port in Puerto Plata.

I don't recall any conversation about anyone having visited there on HAL or any cruise line.

    Here's a link: http://www.ambercovecc.com/port-information.aspx

I think it's great. I like Grrand Turk, Costa Maya and the 'created port' stops.

There are two cruise ships coming to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic (Amber Cove). Carnival's Victory ship will take its first voyage to Puerto Plata in October, 2015, and Carnival's ship, Adonia will embark on its first voyage to Puerto Plata in April, 2016 via its new brand Fathom, offering a voluntourism experience.

  18. I will be sailing on the Breeze next May 9th 2015 and was booking an excursion through Sevis Tours which provides transportation from the La Romana port. I got an e-mail back from them (Ingren)indicating that Carnival may be docking in Puerto Plata instead next year? Is this true?? If so I need to cancel my excursion. My Itinerary however says La Romana.

We noticed that you were scheduled to be sailing on the Breeze in May, 2015, so you most likely proceeded as planned, but just in case, we would love to provide you with more information regarding the cruise ships coming to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Carnival's Victory ship will take its first voyage to Puerto Plata in October, 2015, and Carnival's ship, Adonia will embark on its first voyage to Puerto Plata in April, 2016 via its new brand Fathom, offering a voluntourism experience.

I have visited Puerto Plata several times (and write about it regularly) and can say from personal experience that you will absolutely fall in love with the city and will enjoy yourself immensely on your excursions. Feel free to ask me any questions as well and I will try my best to answer them for you.
