are you going to Rome at the end of the cruise?

or going to rome for a day tour?

we had bad experiences going TO the ship on the cunard charter bus from the savoy hotel

    and

bad experience coming back to the train station after the cruise also on the cunard chartered bus.

    this july on QV

can't remember price maybe US$100 per person round trip

what is an excursion coach? we also had an issue with a tour bus (is that an excursion bus) that cunard provided in Barcelona.

Our main issues with Cunard were the shore tours. my suspicion is that cunard low bids them , then does not monitor the tours quality. they do these tours over and over for 10 or 20 years, you think they would get it right.

  2. Hi there everyone

We are looking forward to our Med cruise on Queen Victoria, taking care of the first 2 weeks of December. (I don't like all the frantic run up to Christmas - so ideal!) My question is about Rome please - what is the best way to get to Rome from the port in Civitavecchia? I have an arthritic knee, so I'm concerned about too many steps etc at the train station. Is is best just to get the Excursion coach to drop us off in Rome, even though the price is astronomic? Or a Cunard excursion? I am assuming that there is no shuttle? Appreciate people's suggestions - thanks, Gill :)

  3. Have a great time Hattie. A few times I have been put in the balconies on deck 4 forward and hated the rooms. The balconies themselves were fine but the location at the front of the ship is terrible for anyone who is noise-sensitive, as I am. When the ship manoevres into port each morning, you get about an hour of noise. It's fine if you are up early but no good if you need your sleep. About 3 rooms back you can also hear the theatre productions - but that's only a problem if you want to go to bed at that time. I was generally in the Queen's Room so had no problems.

our room was in the lower 4030s like 4031 or so. We did not have any noise issues.

  4. Thanks both, were you happy with your metal fronted balcony edwardh1? I'm not a massive fan of the sheltered balconies on QM2 but these look OK.

no issues with the balcony though my thought is that the metal blocks the view somewhat, that is, you almost have to stand to see out fully (reason of course is to keep people from falling over the rail). Are any of the rails "open" in other cabins?

I stayed at an ocean front hotel once where the designer has concrete walls somewhat in the same design, when you sat down you lost some of the view.

And being picky, cunard on that 4th deck, on QV, seems to place the sink, shower and toilet in one room. One Disney cruise I went on (liked it, very clean but there were actually some kids on that ship!)) had one of those 3 in its own space, I think it was the sink, so easier to use by two people, if I remember correctly. A better design in my opinion. And the disney cabin was an inside cabin even, compared to cunard balcony cabin.

  5. Might I also add the man who just stole the one chip from the buffet with his fingers because norovirus obviously doesn't apply to him.

QV seems to encourage some of this, in the Lido (buffet eating area) in busy times the ice machine can not keep up(saw this on 2 QV cruises 2015 and 2013) and they just put out a tub of ice next to the machine and people use a glass to scoop ice out,

    thats unsanitary in my mind.

They need to dump the ice into the top of the ice machine and have the machine dispense it.

  6. Thanks for the link. From what I've read of tourist class conditions it wasn't very pleasant. I could see somebody making the calculation that five hours of airsickness was more endurable than five days of seasickness. :(

Is tourist class somewhat lower in the ship? They might have been better off. Less roll?

  7. does anyone know how Cunards business is doing? Why do I ask, because of all the talk about dress codes. Do really strict dress codes help or hurt them?

Is Cunards business growing, say over the last decade? , in comparison to the indusrty as a whole (which would recognize the effects of the 08-11 recession).

Or is it in decline, for whatever reason?

Or are their financials hidden in the owning company.

  8. wonder what the root fear of any "relaxation of standards" is ?

-will it cause the present demographic of cunard travelers to change?

-will it attract younger people or more kids?

-will it cause the dining room experience to change? many forum topics seem food related and status onboard the ship related (who eats where and with whom and when) . Maybe thats a main attraction of Cunard.

    - will it mark the end of some type of era which may be more dear to the hearts of the British, than perhaps other nations.

it does seem to be a touchy subject.

  9. Not according to the US CDC.

Malaria prophylaxis has the potential for much more severe side effects.

True and I am not a doc.

we have taken Malarone without problems, but some of the side effects on the other 2 main drugs available can be strong. Its complicated.

  10. We would also like to know if the QV now has the large screen TVs mounted on the wall like the QM2 and QE. I keep reading that she doesn't have them yet but would love to have a definite answer. Thanks!!

our qv cabin this july did not

  11. Posted above "Not at all surprising ! This was a fly cruise and the demographic of the guest from the Med, who board the ship for their vacation changes."

what is a vacation change? I don't know what that is.

And whats a fly cruise- is there something wrong about a fly cruise?

In the med are most passengers Brits?

On our QV Rome to Rome it was 80% brits, on the same ship Miami to Panama and back (don't know the % Brits but maybe much lower), due to Americans getting on in Miami.

in the Med on leaving a port no one went on deck to watch the departure. Maybe 5 people.

In miami and the islands it was a big fantail party with DJ or small band and drinks as the island slowly receded away from the stern.

    what causes this difference?

  12. Strange things can and do happen. Two years ago I saw a couple at a lovely table for two in PG only at embarkation day lunch. Never saw them in the restaurant again. I later heard that they didn't care for the menu and preferred to eat in Kings Court. Stuff like this cannot be made up.

Why? I really don't want to know. I do know that I have nothing in common with anybody who would make such a choice.

If you have a set eating time say early like in Britannia, and your Cunard shore excursion comes back to the ship 2+ hours late, thats one reason.

  13. what determines the Queens room music? Is it a Cunard dictate, i.e. the music must be of the past?,

or is it British Ballroom thing?

None of the American ballroom dance clubs I have been to in the last 20 years play music that "old".

There are some great Elton John 90s Rumbas, but you will not hear them on the QV, you will get Cab Calloway etc. instead.

  14. And if Carnival had not bought Cunard there would be no active, true ocean liner in service today. QE2 would certainly be finished by now. Those who would sail on her anywhere are not getting any younger. And newer generations are not content with oceanviews.

what is not discussed much is the changes in passengers that will happen in the next 10 years and how and if those changes will change Cunard.

Will the Glenn Miller music in the Queens room still be popular in another 10 or 15 years?
