  1. thank you for the menus... we never sailed on Princess before so was nervous with the food..

Every cruise line has the same strange menu options. I swear none of those cooks has been to american restaurants.

  2. No. There used to be a choice of grilled beef medallions on the always available side of the menu. Now the beef choice is a "gourmet" burger. They still have the chicken and salmon as options along with fettuccini alfredo.

What's this chicken option? I only eat chicken with BBQ sauce. I'm kind of picky, and I like flavor.

  3. Best meal I ever had on a cruise was Grouper on the Carnival Miracle. Apparently, nobody does that anymore. To me, a lot of the stuff on the menu is just odd. Can you opt for a filet mignon in the main dining room on Princess? The Carnival cruise I was on ages ago allowed that.

  4. On the Ruby in March we stopped by the Crown Grille as soon as we boarded and were told there were no reservations available the entire cruise. The very snotty young man admonished me for not reserving on line. There was no answer on the dine line when we called from the cabin.

That's ridiculous. How am I supposed to know what night I want to try there until I see the menu for the main dining room? We've got a free meal at a specialty restaurant included this trip too. Going the the Ruby July 28th.

  5. I'll be on the Ruby Princess next month. I might give in a get a suit for the formal nights just because the AC is usually so cold I'll probably want the jacket if I'm wearing a nice shirt and tie anyway. The rest of the nights I fully intend to wear jeans. Princess' own policy on their website only forbids jeans "with fraying and/or holes." Mine are like new. Might even pickup a new pair or two. Definitely not pleased about the ban on baseball caps in the dining room. I never go out without my Harley cap.

  6. Most definitely bring your own. I'm a Dew drinker and there is no such beast onboard. No Dr. Pepper either. It's easy to just carry a 12 pack each in your carry-on luggage. Not a problem. I don't usually bring my Dew anymore though. I replace it by purchasing Bourbon or Scotch and it seems to work out well. :D

I can't imagine airport security being happy about a 12 pack of Surge in my carry on.

  7. The biggest problem with gun soda is that they never seem to get the mix right.

I'm surprised it's so hard. I can often tell what bar it came from.

I know. I can't stand that. I notice the same at Restaurants. Any place that has a bar has Coke/Pepsi that tastes watered down, while cheap breakfast joints, fast food places, etc have nice strong soda. Doesn't make sense. Is the equipment they use at bars garbage in comparison to the standard fountain setup the other places use or do they do it on purpose?

  8. The closing of the US Airways hub at PIT impacted flights from Western Pennsylvania. Where once there were non-stops (I assume that's what you meant when you wrote "direct"), now you mostly have to fly to a hub and connect. But to say that there aren't the flights you can use is poppycock. Lots of alternatives to get from PIT to SEA. Could it be that the "best" flights are more expensive, and so you don't want them? Or that you are insisting on a non-stop, even if they don't exist. Because when you say "nothing", I find that hard to believe. Tons of one-stop connections on several airlines. As for your FLL flight, why do I suspect you bought a flight later in the day because it was cheaper? As noted, taking the ship transfer limits your flexibility.

So, other than cheap nonstops are exactly the time that YOU want, what would you like from your airline experience?

I didn't look for a cheaper flight. I took what I could get the day I needed to fly.

  9. We have so many airlines and so many flights, but somehow there's nothing to accommodate a 7 day cruise from Seattle on July 28th. Like nobody does direct flights from Pittsburgh area to Seattle. Flights are never anywhere close to the right time of day for arriving/leaving on cruises. Last time I went on a cruise was in Miami. Took the shuttle from the cruise line back to Ft Lauderdale and ended up sitting in front of the check-in counters for like 3 hours because it was too early to even check our luggage, and what else were we going to do with it? Haul it around town and look for a restaurant to chill in? that sucked. Was using my suitcase for a seat.

  11. Typically it will be warmer mid to high 70's and sunny. You still could run into a rainy day, but they are fewer that time of year.

What about at night in late July? If I book this, it'll be Princess, and I'm hoping to check out the "movies under the stars" in the evenings.

  12. Yeah, I was wondering what to expect too. I was debating between late June or a couple dates in July. I'm getting pissed that some of the sail dates jumped like $500 in the past few weeks. Seems like I need to book now for one of the weeks that's still reasonable or wait for next year.

  13. So spring break has gone from a time for college students to party to everywhere getting overrun by kids instead? How did this happen? What idiot decided to start giving grade schoolers spring break, anyway? What do college kids do nowadays? I guess most probably can't afford cruises anyway. I wonder if all-inclusive resorts end up the same way that time of year. I definitely agree with whoever suggested each cruise line provide an adults only cruise.

  14. Mya, you sound like me. In July I was a solo traveler on the Jewell of the Seas as part of the "Radio Classics" group cruise to Alaska. It was great fun ( you can Google it) . The ages were 50-80 and I was about in the middle range. There were plenty of people to hang out with when i wanted to, otherwise, i was on my own. I agree that the group dining is a good idea. Great place to meet people and make plans if you want.

My travel agent has booked me on the Ruby Princess in October. I am not part of the single group, but it doesn't sound like it is a "members only" group. If I do well as a solo traveler on the Ruby, I will plan another trip to Alaska in May, before the kids get out. I am also flying into LAX and my TA is arranging for transfers to the pier.

Do most you you make your own arrangements or use a TA?

    Diana

That singles group on the Ruby October 25th is advertised on the Princess website itself, even though it links to some TA who handles the group. If anyone gives you trouble about accessing the same areas of the ship the group is using, remind them that Princess advertised it directly and you paid for full access to all public areas of the ship.

I was planning on taking that cruise myself, but I was a little disappointed when my TA contacted the group TA and found out the average age of those booked was 58. Then the flight times weren't lining up to get me home, so I didn't book. I'm still trying to decide what to do.

  15. Grouper is available on the Norwegian Getaway in the Ocean Blue. They also had other items that are typically sold in higher-end restaurants such as Lobster, Dover Sole, and Black Sea Bass. This place is worth the added cost.

Damn. Too bad Norwegian can't make pizza worth a damn. The itineraries for that ship kinda suck for this year anyway. Has anyone seen it on a menu like this on another cruise line the past year or so?

  16. [quote name='Bruin Steve']"Probably"
What day of the week? Traffic will likely be tougher if Mon-Fri...
LAX is only a 20 mile drive, mostly on Freeway...On a weekend day, this should take about 30 minutes...BUT, you never know about traffic in LA...There could always be an accident, construction or some other thing that could slow it down...

  17. Usually on at least one night, Carnival serves an expensive or not-usually-seen fish at dinner. Two cruises ago I had roasted sea bass, and in April one night I had corvina, which I had never tried before. Both were delicious.

Could you come up wit h a bigger signature? Goddamn, dude. It covers the whole screen even at 1920x1080 resolution.
