  1. My Mom and I are doing the Danube Waltz in December and would also like to know about the recommended/not recommended excursions, including if the trip to Český Krumlov is worth it. Thanks in advance!

  2. My mother and I did City of Light last year. We are going on the Danube Waltz this December. We have also been on the Rhine Getaway in 2015. I obviously can't compare the two, not having been on the Waltz yet but I enjoyed City of Lights because you get a little bit of time in both Paris and Prague. The downsides I found to this cruise was there is a lot of time on the bus. A LOT. Neither Paris, not Prague is part of the boat cruise so you have to travel by bus. Understandable, put still a lot of bus time. I would also say the the hotels they picked in both Prague and Paris are not in the most desirable of locations, especially Prague. We knew this going in but got a price we couldn't turn down.

  3.

After Koblenz - I recommend the cable car ride up onto Ehrenbreitstein - you will see the UNESCO world heritage site with the many castles along the Rhine river banks high on the hills. Get ready to take lots of photos. :)

At Mainz you enter the Main river. There are some great small and large town along the Main. Those doing the Amsterdam to Budapest itineraries can give you some information on those places, as well.

Thank you so much for your time and help.

I have already been on the Rhine Getaway with my mom last year so we have visited the Marksburg Castle outside Koblenz and the Heidelberg Castle in Heidelberg. We dotn care to see these attractions again.

Do you have any advice on what to do in these towns if we aren't going on the planned tours?

I might need to figure out which actual town we pull up to so we can get advice...unless you already know ;)

Thank you in advance. My travel documents are suppose to arrive any day so I might know more soon.

  4. Hello CPT Trips,

And British tourists after an inch of a glass of alcohol. Referring of course to recent around-footballing events in France. Shook my head in disbelief at the disturbing footage from Marseilles. I do hope Germans fans behave themselves better in Lille today.

    Back on topic:

I have seen that Viking stops in Winningen. Winningen is a delightful little place with a great wine tradition. On top of that quite literally it has a small airport called Flugplatz Winningen on the plateau above the town. Nice landscape and views from up there. You can take a taxi there, it is only six minutes. Walking is very strenuous, I have done it.

Winningen is the birthplace of August Horch, the famous engineer who founded the car company Horch and later Audi! Audi is latin for Horch, both meaning "listen!".

The museum in Winningen has got a small exhibition on Horch.

coloradonative4life, it seems though, that you will arrive too late to enjoy the town in daylight in October. I fear the ideas mentioned on the Viking website are difficult to put into practice as cafés are not open after dinner. Those will be wine taverns and pubs. Still it is a nice town to walk through.

I am sorry I am so late to see this advice, notamermaid.

Thank you for sharing. I have seen you post on many a boards that I follow. Are you currently living in Germany? You have such good advice.

I am asking for specific reasons, but don't mean to impose on your knowledge. :)

  5. You might consider a "Paris to Prague" cruise (Viking's Cities of Light for example). Cruise portion is actually from Trier to Nuremberg. You usually take a bus from Paris to Trier and from Nuremberg to Prague. Some lines allow you do do the cruise portion only.

In my opinion, the Moselle is the most scenic river I've cruised, and you get Roman history in Trier. You also do the Rhine gorge before turning onto the Main on your way to Nuremberg.

See the thread at the link below for more on the Moselle.

What a crazy suggestion, FuelScience! My mother and I booked the Cities of Light cruise back in April because the deal was too good to pass up. We leave October 26th Prais-Prague!

We are very excited. Im sure the bug will continue once we are off the Odin. :)

  6. I understand this is an old thread. Just wanted to reach out to see if anyone did the optional tours that cost extra. Any tours that stood out? My mom and I did the TOP OF COLOGNE extra tour for our Rhine Getaway cruise and it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. Thanks in advance!

  7. Wow, all your advice was great!! My mom and I got suckered into the "Cities of Light" on Viking because we got the full 12 days for 2300!!! What?!? Couldn't pass that up. If anyone has advice on Paris or Prague or anything I between, let me know. What is in store for 2017... :)

  8. If there is another forum and I havent found it, please let me know.

My mother (late 50s) and I (late 20s) are completing our second Viking cruise this October 27th for Cities of Light Paris-Prague (last was Rhine Getaway Oct 2015).

We are very excited and all booked. If you have any advice for this tour, please let me know!

  9. I returned from Viking's Rhine Getaway in November. I have the bug and want to go on another river cruise soon or at least book one soon.

I want to know what your favorite river cruise was. Tell me the company and the cruise name and why it was your favorite.

We have no certain allegiance to Viking, but we did enjoy their atmosphere and service.

I want to go somewhere different, but am not opposed to more of Germany.1160531634

I am 29 and I traveled with my 59 year old mother. We like trying new foods, wines and beers, and we are big walkers.

    Thank you for your advice!
