  1. I hope it is ok to share this travelogue here - I visited John's on a very wet day in 2015, I've just re-edited the video I created at the time and uploaded it to YouTube.  The video shows the painted buildings in the heavy rain, after this I went up signal hill to see Cabot Tower and Queen's Battery.  Although the weather was bad it actually made for some interesting images of a wonderful place.

Admins, you aren't happy with me sharing this here please delete it - my aim in creating the video is just to give a flavour of the town to anyone planning to visit it.

  2. A few days ago I posted a travelouge of a visit to Amsterdam (on MV Marco Polo) to my Travel Photography Channel on YouTube - if you are planing to visit it there it might give you some ideas of things to see, do and photograph in the city.

You can find the travelogue here:

I've also posted a short photography technique video that I shot while I was visiting the city.  It's all about how we can improve our travel photos by using repetition in the images.  It's only 3min 48s long and the techniques are applicable for any camera whether is a DSLR, a "point-and-shoot" or even a phone.  If you are going to the city it might give some ideas on how to get some interesting images of your visit.

Admins - if there is any problems with me sharing these video here, please delete the post.  Thanks

  3. Hi folks,

I've recently posted a short photography technique video to my YouTube travel photography channel.  It's all about how we can improve our travel photos by using repetition in the images.  The video was shot on location in Amsterdam.  It's only 3min 48s long and the techniques are applicable for any camera whether is a DSLR, a "point-and-shoot" or even a phone.  I hope you find it helpful.

  4. Whatever you go for make sure you get something with a viewfinder!  If you are used to useing a 'normal' camera you are likely to get frustraited if you can't compose your images because you can't see the screen on the back of the camera.  I am a guest lecturer on Photography on cruise ships and this is the comment I hear from people more than anything they wish they had a viewfinder!  Particularly in bright locations such as the Caribbean.

My recommendation is to look at the Panasonic Lumix rage - I can't give you a specific model number because they change a little to frequently for me to keep track.  My main camera is 5DMk3 but I do have a Panasoinc Lumix point and shoot for times I need to travel light and I have been very pleased with it.

    All the best

    Ian.

  5. I've recently posted a travelouge of a visit to Cherbourg (on MV Marco Polo) to my Travel Photography Channel on YouTube - if you are planing to visit it there it might give you some ideas of things to see, do and photograph in the town.

Thanks Ian, love the island and the people of Tortola. The cruise pier area has been updated since your visit of course, and they have rebuilt most of the infrastructure since Irma and Maria in 2018. Now they just need to get through this pandemic, and it looks like they will slowly be opening for travel there.

    Thanks for a nice video!

Thank you for your kind words about the video.  It's good to hear that the infrastructure has been rebuilt - I'm sure one day I will be able to return once cruise ships are opperating again.

  7. I hope it is ok to post this here.  Back in March 2016 I was travelling around the Caribbean on MV Marco Polo and I had the pleasure of visiting Tortola, Road Town & Nanny Cay for the day.  (This is before the hurricane devastated the island).  I've only just finished editing my travelogue of the visit, I hope it gives people thinking of visiting Tortola, Road Town and Nanny Cay an idea of what this wonderful part of the world is like.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqWHb06Q3js

  8. I hope it is ok to share this here - I've just published a travelogue of a trip I did on the catamaran Excellence from St John's (It was in 2016 but I've only just finished the editing) - it was a great trip. I hope that the video helps anyone who is planning to visit Antigua once we are able to go cruiseing again.

  9. Thank you to everyone who has commented about the previous Travelogues I have posted here. I've just uploaded the latest one from my time on the MV Marco Polo lecturing on Photography. This time we are in Sagueney.

  10. Thank you to everyone who has commented about the previous Travelogues I have posted here. I've just uploaded the latest one from my time on the MV Marco Polo lecturing on Photography. This time we are in Montreal and I am on a journey to find the Formula One circuit.

I hope anyone planing a visit to Montreal might find it useful.

  11. Our travel agent could also give a good deal on the Montreal to NY cruise.

Oceania visits somewhat unusual places compared to the mainstream lines, so we will be going to Havre St. Pierre, plus Corner Brook and Saguenay (spelling??), so I'd appreciate any information on what there is to do there. I noticed there's info about Saguenay on Tomportguides.com, but Havre St. Pierre is a total mystery to me. For starters I'll have to check out that island that was mentioned.

Montreal is the next Travelouge I will be posting - possibly later today, I'm just finishing the edit as I type this.

Oddly enough, Sagueney, Harre-Saint-Pierre, and Corner Brook are also places I visited and when I get the chance to do the editing I will be posting those travelogues too. (You might want to subscribe to my YouTube channel! ;-) https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=iansstudiostockport - never one to miss the chance to give it plug!)

  12. Do you find that you need to do organized tours on this itinerary? I am looking at possibly doing this trip in 2017.

Love the videos Ian. Thank you!

Glad you like the videos. I didn't do any organised tours for any of the locations we visited in Canada apart from two places. Firstly a walking tour round Sidney, Nova Scotia. Saw nothing you couldn't do easily under your own steam. Secondly I did the tour to Naipiskau Island from Havre Saint Pierre. (Both times I acted as ship's escort because I was one of the guest lecturers).

Having said all that, as a professional photographer my main aim is to photograph locations so I generally prefer to do things at my own pace where possible. So as the saying goes.... "your mileage may vary!" ;-)

  13. I think perhaps you meant to say the organized tours take you to the top, too. Our private tour did that and it's the quickest walk to the falls vs taking those monstrous stairs. Congrats on making it back up! After our visit at the top, our little bus took us to a parking lot across the road down at the bottom so we could see that view of the falls--cyclone fence made it difficult, but not impossible to photograph the view.

No, I did mean bottom - when I was at the bottom of the falls it looked as though some of the people there were on organised tours and had come in from the cafe end at the bottom. I can't be 100% certain about this but that is certainly how it looked to me.

    Ian.

  14. Hi Roothy

I'm not Ian but last summer did the usual Boston-Quebec City run and videos of those ports are here

    All the best, Tony

Yup, worth looking at Tony's videos - we were on two different cruises but we it appears we had a very similar itinerary. A few similarities between our videos but a different perspective and style.

  15. Thanks. I watched it. Glad I've now been warned about all those steps at the falls.

It is possible to approach the falls from the bottom - not sure what bus you would need to catch, the one I got arrived at the top! I think the organised tours take you to the bottom, as well.

Whew! You took some great pictures, though? Was spray a problem at the bottom? I don't want to ruin my camera.

My camera is fairly tolerant to water - it is a pro-camera with a pro-lens on it, so all I needed was small towel to cover it it and dry it. You don't have to go right into the spray. Plenty of spaces to see the falls without getting wet. (But going into the sprays is half the fun! ;-) )

Do you have any other videos in eastern Canada or New England, US?

    Oh yes.... all eastern Canada

More to come in the next few weeks - it was long cruise!

  16. Thanks for doing this. However, I can't get the video to play. It may just be my computer, as it's a little balky sometimes, but in any case, thought I'd let you know.

Thanks for letting me know... looks like there is a problem. I will look into it and repost the thread.

  17. I was visiting Canada last month on the MV Marco Polo. I recorded a number of video travelogues of the port's we visited. I've just uploaded the one for Quebec City.

The aim of the video travelogues is in part to be my record of my visit. But also to help others who are going there to see what the place is like, and to show a few of the things to see and to photograph. (I am a photographer so the latter is important to me).

Here's the Quebec City one, I hope it might be of interest to anyone who has visited or who is intending to visit. It covers Montmerency Falls and the Old City.

    Any comments and feedback welcome.

(PS Thank you to everyone for the kind words about the previous travelogue videos I posted here).

  18. Really cool video, glad that you had a good trip here to Halifax. I can't believe you walked all the way from the Pier to Fairview Lawn, that is a bit of a hike.

Yup, a little over 4 miles according to my GPS. I did get the bus back though.

Really like the effect you used in the video for the photos, what editing software do you use and what is that effect called.

I use Proshow Producer to create the photo sequences and generate a high def video of just photo animation with a black title frame between each section. I then import that video into Adobe Premiere CC and split that video into sections and drop them into the main video at the appropriate points.

The photo captions are typed into each image in Adobe Lightroom. That is something I have to do anyhow, then that information is extracted by Proshow Producer and displayed below each image.

It all sounds much more complex than it actually is - now I am familiar with the technique it's quite mechanical.

  19. Thank you for sharing. Your nice black and white pictures show that good photography can be done even in adverse weather conditions.

Indeed it can! Actually one of the lectures I gave on the cruise was "Photography when the weather turns bad." As luck would have it, I gave the talk the day before we arrived at St. John's. As you can image there was an awful lot of interest from the passengers to see just how I got on that day!

  20. Another of my video travelogues. This was our first port of call in Canada - St John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. The weather was a little 'damp' to say the least, but still plenty to see and do. And as a photographer I loved the chance to make some atmospheric images. But rather than me tell the story in this post so much easier to show you....
