Question - is there a time frame where ships need to enter and exit the inside passage area East of Vancouver Island.

A friend was on NCL Spirit and was told their Southbound cruise would not do the inside passage (they found out months earlier) due to the time constraints necessary to travel in this area. Something about 7.5 hours.....? Any insight on this.

Edit: I see someone already answered your question.

It has to do with flow through the narrows.  If the flow is not going in your direction, they will not allow you to enter.  We only found this out because there was a medical debarkation on our southbound trip and we missed the original window for us to enter the Seymour Narrows.  The ship waited for our next window and were about 5 hours late arriving in Vancouver.

Avoid NCL in/out of Vancouver.  Notwithstanding their cruise map that shows otherwise, NCL avoids the east side of Vancouver Island.

That isn't always the case.  We were on the NCL Jewel 7/3/23 sailing and we sailed through the Seymour Narrows.

Well I discovered that NCL offers a pre-cruise tour for 3 day in Honolulu, the pricing doesn't extend into 2024, so the cost is a bit fuzzy. Has anyone done the cruise tour that can give some feedback ? I assume you can probably do Wed-Sat on your own for less (or more) cost if you are inclined.

We did the precruise extension in 2015. It’s really more like one day on your own. The first day, we arrived mid afternoon and went to dinner and bed. The third day had our transfer to the ship early enough we had to cancel our planned morning excursion.  We did a circle island tour with Pearl Harbor, but had very little time to do some of the other things we wanted to. If you’re wanting to see more of Oahu, I would extend post cruise or do your own pre cruise arrangements.

  4. Excuse me - you are correct about it being the Dream and not the Breeze. However, I never knew that CCL ships ever docked at Coxen Hole. At least that would be a fallback in case of bad weather.

We were on the Carnival Dream in 2013 and were unable to dock at Mahogany Bay, due to weather. We were lucky because there weren't any other ships in port and we were able to dock at Coxen Hole instead. So, keep your fingers crossed!

  5. I will wait to have this confirmed by someone who actually ate in a speciality restaurant and can confirm. Yes the 18% is new but for beverages. They will take a cut in gratuity from me if it is the case. $4.50 vs the $10.00 I usually provide

We were on the Pride of America last week (3/7/15-3/14/15) and were not charged an additional 18% on the charges, but when the ship was in port, we were charged taxes on the surcharge.

  6. Bigb - for pricing, have a look at Discount Hawaii Car Rental's website here - click on Maui Island, Kahului Harbor - then check the rates with a few of the "brands" for your dates.

If you are a member of Costco, I'd recommend giving them a quick look at rental car pricing as well. For Maui, I was able to get a better rate through Costco than I was through Discount Hawaii Car Rental. However, they were cheaper for Oahu.

  7. so... what were the options?

We could rebook a different sailing on POA (January 3-December 12, 2015) at the same fare we had for the 2/7/15 cruise or we could transfer to a different NCL ship and sailing (now through December 2015) at whatever the current PUBLISHED fare was.

If you were booked in a suite, you were given $100 OBC/ stateroom (cannot be used for service charges) and $50 OBC/ stateroom (cannot be used for service charges) if you were in any other stateroom

  8. NCL cancelled it? Did they give a reason? Yep, just looked at the NCL website and that week is not available to book. Maybe a charter booked it? Never heard of that on the POA. Or I guess it could be another dry dock for some sort of repairs.

Here is an excerpt from the letter I got

    Dear Valued Guest:

Pride of America's 7-Day Hawaii Inter-Island sailing from Honolulu on February 7, 2015 is no longer available as the ship will be out of service for maintenance and enhancements from February 7, 2015 to February 14, 2015. Norwegian Cruise Line sincerely apologizes for this cancellation and would like to thank you for your understanding. Norwegian is offering guests currently booked on these sailings the following options:

  9. Really not sure what the motive is to dig up a old thread from 2009. Sure you have a choice (and opinions) and that is your right. BTW the bus incident happened 2,500 miles away on the other side of the country ( like comparing a small town in Iowa to the crime in L.A.

Yeah, I thought all of the big issues were on the Pacific side of Mexico, that's where the cruise lines are omitting stops to Puerto Vallarta, etc.
