  1. Thanks!  I love your advice!  My husband and I would love to find a jazz community both on the ship and at home.  We can't believe there's no place to go hear jazz near our house -- the streets roll up at 9.  We go to Blues Alley in Georgetown sometimes, but we need a Blues Alley north in Bethesda!  We debated between the Blue Note and Jazz Cruises, but kind of accidentially signed up for the Jazz Cruise and decided to stay with the straight jazz for our first time.  AND WE LOVE ARUBA!  It's a great place, and we're excited to go to Curacao.

Who are your favorite artists?  I tend to the saxophonists, and hubby likes piano.

  2. It's so wonderful to hear all of your stories!!!   What a great musical community.

We are booked on the 2021 Jazz Cruise Jan 16-23.  I just (tried) started a Roll Call.

We realized this is going on during the inauguration in 2021.  My husband and i live in bethesda MD and do policy all day, so we think that will be a good time to be out of town no matter what the outcome.

  3. Hi all. My husband and I would really love to do a blue note jazz cruise but don’t know what to expect. Has anyone done one before and can you describe the kind of jazz venues? Are there extra charges for performers like David Sanborn? And is there a blue note 2021? Thanks

  4. Interesting that you've heard good things. I thought they were awful - like one of the worst cruise bands and I've heard some awful ones on Carnival, trust me. Listened to a few songs, none were in the right key, so we left. Walked by a few times when they were playing and stopped to listen and each time I thought their musicianship was awful. Maybe their audience interaction skills are good?

But, as we all know, everyone's taste is different. Those guys obviously impressed someone because they got the gig.

I also thought Sligo was bad but husband liked the alt rock set they did. Drummer was lead singer and it was hard to see him in the back.

  5. Not to detract from Keith's photos, but you may find an actual map a bit handier to print/stick on your phone and take with you than many pictures. Start with this page - the middle one especially is useful for wandering, with several heritage homes listed as well as the 'how to walk to the Empress/Chinatown' route. Swans Brewpub is on Pandora, just to the left of the little castle symbol marking historic Chinatown - they'll pull you the most authentic pint in the city; hand-pulled, naturally carbonated English style beers served at correct cellar temp. Spinnakers also has a proper cellar, but their hand-pulled beers are not as consistent - the upstairs bar especially has too long a line from the cellar so needs pump-assistance which froths the beer more. Plus the beer sometimes sits in the line too long - unless it's being ordered frequently it can easily warm up TOO much.
