Seems that the staff at Princess would disagree with your opinion. The likelihood may be low but not so low that Princess felt it was necessary to cancel the Seattle-based cruises ... yet.

I'm pretty sure they've got much more information than we do at this time.

I guess we'll see. I'm pretty sure that the political will for opening up cruises is pretty small right now in Washington state. I am pretty sure that there are no elected officials in Washington state on the staff of Princess Cruises.

If you do decide to wear a mask, make sure it's a medical mask and not a cloth one.  Medical masks do provide some measure of protection.  That's not what's being touted, though.  A cloth mask is far worse than no mask.

In my opinion, coughing or sneezing on people is rather disrespectful of others.

Not sure where in the Pacific Northwest you are from, hopefully I will not encounter you. If you think a mask is uncomfortable, try a respirator

They went on to Seattle, and docked there the next morning, with no Victoria.  The sky did not fall.

How will all of this work in September 2020?

Another question is if Alaska cruises will be allowed at all this season? It is not clear Seattle's Port will open to ships. When you get to Seattle you might have swim to shore, maintaining 6ft social distancing of course.

Princess has two ships still sailing Alaska starting in July form Seattle. Emerald and Ruby.  FYI Holland America also has two ships sailing. The Eurodam and Koningsdam.  At least as of now they are going

Maybe. Don't bet the farm on it. Not a big appetite in Seattle for large crowds of tourists flying in town for cruises, re infecting the community.

The only Alaskan cruises this season are 2 ships round trip out of Seattle. They may or may not sail depending on Canada.  The all stop on Victoria

This also will require the Port of Seattle allowing the cruises. As of this date, the Port is closed indefinitely with no commitment of opening this summer to any cruises. The State of Washington has also not agreed to these sailings. Well.Good luck Princess, you're going to need it...

Even if Seattle (and BC and Alaska) are able to return to some normalcy before the rest of the country do you think the Governor (or Mayor) is going to allow thousands of people from other infected areas to descend on the city and board a densely populated vessel and then have to deal with any infections upon their return?

Well said. I just about to type this. I continue to be surprise how people in other parts of the county don't get that the cruise party to Alaska is likely over this season.

Carnival is planning on salvaging that itinerary even if it's just part of it.

Or just take naïve people's money, then being slow at giving it back. Shame on Princess for not matching the reality of the communities where it Ports.

Not surprised by this at all. If this virus hit Alaska from cruise passengers, the region would be devastated. We think our health care system is overwhelmed...I can't even imagine how the small Alaska towns could cope!

Many small AK towns end up sending their critical care patients to Seattle already. My DW treats them at University of Washington Medical Center. They have a full house now from local cases.

With all Vancouver and Victoria ports closed until July 1 the only way AK cruises can cruise before then is for the federal government waive the PVSA so that the ship does not have to stop in a foreign port.  It has been done on a case basis emergency in the past.  Will they waive it for a couple months, who knows.   The alternative is to find another foreign port within reasonable distance which is a challenge.  This all is predicated on the cruise ships starting to cruise again which also is doubtful.  I wish all good luck so that we all can cruise again soon.

Any West Coast ports, including Alaska, opening up to cruise ships is very, very doubtful for the foreseeable future. We'll find out. Maybe the inconceivable will happen. I guess dreams are for free...

Wasn't addressing you to begin with, and no need to shout on here.  Most are just following this thread to learn of new information regarding Alaskan cruises, not necessarily all this back and forth arguing about cruising out of Arizona (of all places)???  Thread got off topic, plain and simple, and I wasn't the only one to notice it.  Done.

The west coast is in various states of disaster right now. Of course, Alaska cruises all leave from the west coast. Some other parts of the country seem out of touch with what is happening because of the virus controls here.  Really out of touch. I suspect Princess Cruises is holding off decisions because they stand those hundreds of millions of dollars. Yes, frankly I am doubtful for the season because of what I am seeing in communities, that the Alaska season is savable.

    I must respectfully disagree.

Chances of a cruise from scottsdale are zero, although it would certainly be an appealing market for princess!

Chances of cruises which originate or end in Vancouver, nearly zero ... as this is exactly what canada has banned.

Chances of round trip cruises from Seattle to Alaska, non-zero.

Assuming the corona virus situation is such that ships coulde visit any alaskan port...

The obvious thing stopping them would be the PVSA requirement that the ship call at a nearby foreign port.

This is exactly the requirement of ships cruising from the west coast to Hawaii (round trip).

Princess (and other cruise lines) meet the PVSA with a service call in ensenada; when no

passengers are allowed to go ashore.

It would not be unreasonable to think that such an arrangement could be made with Victoria ... where

a service call is made, and no passengers go ashore, but the terms of the PVSA are met.

I guess we will see... You are in the middle of the prairie, I'm at ground zero. We have a different view.

    Regards.

Wow.  Some people's children, am I right?

I HOPE coronavirus won't kill many people.  I HOPE the economy won't kill many people.  I HOPE the economic recovery is fast and painless.  I HOPE some people's children won't get their shorts twisted in a knot because, my gawd!, someone might be wrong on the internet.  Some of these hopes are already lost causes, others are still alive.

And yeah, I HOPE our cruise to Alaska goes as planned.

I hope it all works out for all. Princess Cruises to Alaska are more likely to port out of Scottsdale, AZ than Seattle or Vancouver anytime in reasonable future.

I'm glad that you are so confident in your belief that a PVSA waiver is not going to happen.  I don't suppose that you can provide any source for such a strong belief can you?  Certainly, you might be correct but with things the way they are now I don't see how anybody can be "Absolutely 100% sure anything is NOT going to happen" concerning the coronavirus.  Must be nice to have such deep personal knowledge or well placed friends.

    Tom

A PVSA waiver, combined with Seattle and Alaska allowing ports, is utter nonsense until the "all clear" for infection free communities and ships, which is going to be many months away with some optimism. Time to get real.

my comment about waiting a week or two and hopefully things will get better - in 10 -14 days with everyone staying home and not socializing and gathering in groups and spreading the virus, we might see a dramatic change

    .

If you google flu deaths in the USA you get a range of 56,000, 20,000-40,000, 80,000, 12,000-61,000 yearly.  No one has a true number from year flu deaths - currently we have 150+ deaths in the USA.  This is very minor compared to the regular flu.

Not to turn this into a debate, but this whole things has turned everyone's world upside down.  Business, travel, schools, stock market and people getting sick has made yours and my life an unknown.  We (those on these boards) have money tied up in cruises that may not go, we may not get our money back, we may never cruise again.

Just trying to be positive that this will be over soon.

FYI: All 40 million residents in the state of California have been ordered to stay home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
