  1. Tour 2 says if time permits a visit will be made to George Square in Glasgow,Travelling from Stirling to Greenock will be on the M8,M80 motorways, not like mororways in the USA ,but they can get busy especilly the M8 which runs through the centre of the city , and tends to get heavily congested cossing the Kingston Bridge and for a couple of miles to the White Cart Viaduct at Glasgow Airport.with not much of a scenic nature to look at.

Tour 1 doesnt have much travel on motorways other than a few miles from Greenock to the Erskine Bridge

  2. Yes and No...depends what you intend doing in SPB if you want to do your ownthing you would need a visa ..if you are going to join a ships tour or use one of the several private operators ..no as these operate with a visa waiver.. there are quite a few posts on this forum  which you will get al the information you would need

  3. Visited Visby several years ago and would agree with kaisatsu, although on the day we visited the weather was absolutely vile, had booked a ships tour  town and walls  it was that wet and miserable that a lot of people didn't turn up or like me abandoned it  midtour.

The only reason that I have a fond memory of Visby, is that walking back to the tender point,we came across a coffee shop/icecream parlour called Glassmagasinet where we sat inside for an icecream which was difficult choosing as they had over 150 flavours.

If you’re going to Northern Ireland eg Belfast , you’ll use GB pounds there too. Part of UK of GB and NI.

Also, St Helier, (Jersey), Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own  Sterling notes. Easiest to use CCs 😳😄

Just make sure you don't get change in Jersey Scottish or Northern Irish local notes,as you will have difficulty using these outside there countries of issue

  5. I was in Malta a month ago, and did a cruise from Buggibba to Gozo with a 2hr stop in Comino, there are also cruises from Sliema.

I think realnice 46 is getting the Blue Lagoon confused with the Blue Grotto which is in the south of the island, and is indeed served by the HOHO buses southern route, there is no HOHO buses serving the departure point to Comino in the north of Malta

If you look at http://www.CominoFerries.com this will give you details of the sailings and how to get to the port using MPT buses the journey from Valetta is over an hour in duration.

when I was in Comino there was about 6 cruises boats in the Lagoon roughly 300/400 people, onshore, the island is very barren and rocky ,about 6 shacks/vans selling snacks ,etc, and a couple of portaloos, there was also I noticed an area with about 40/50 deckchairs. but little cover

  6. Pretty sure the requirements are for the ships to visit a foreign port if they aren't US flagged. She doesn't have to get off in Ensenada, but sounds like the fear goes deeper than that.

Merchant Marine Act 1920 aka Jones Act, only US registered ships can operate between two US ports, all foreign registery vessel must operate via a non US port, that's why cruise ships have to on Alaska cruises go into Victoria BC

  7. "I was looking at Rabbie’s for next year, and communicated with their office. They are not planning on offering the group shore excursions from Greenock next summer."

Back to the drawing board I guess.

BusyBus on there website is showing an excursion from Greenock, which might be of interest.

  8. Skagway has about 1k Ketchikan about 14K and Juneau about 31K inhabitants.the downtown areas are fairly small about 20mins or so from end to end.

suggest you look at www.cruiseportwiki.com and www.whatsinport.com which give you details of the ports and maps,it seems the berthing details for 2018 haven't been finalised, but this year the NA berthed at the Cruise terminal in Juneau, City Float 3 in Ketchikan, and Broadway dock in Skagway

  9. There are a couple of tours that sound interesting but we just aren't going to be in port long enough. Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond were the ones I was looking at but so far the ones I've come across get back to Glasgow too late to make the ship.

Although its billed as Glasgow the ship actually berths in Greenock which is about 20miles west of Glasgow, and just about an hour by rail into the city centre ..I see on some of your other posts that you never travel on a train before..but the train is fairly easy to use as there are no changes enroute.

My apologies if you already knew where the ship docked

  10. Thanks

I was just doing that now as a matter of fact. Looks like Castle Cornet, Hauteville House and Herm Island (Shell Beach) are the spots we would be most interested in. Trip Adviser poster indicates 3-4 hours at Castle Cornet and that Shell Beach is beautiful. Appears it is only about a mile walk so wouldn't even need a bus to get there (might getting back though after 3-4 hours exploring.)

Herm Island is a 30minute boat trip from Guernsey.it is not connected to Guernsey

  11. 12 day Royal Princess cruise - Dublin Overnight (appears no Wales although they do have a shorter cruise that does include Wales May, Jun, Aug):

Southampton; Guernsey (St. Peter Port); Cork, (Cobh); Dublin (2 days); Belfast; Glasgow (Greenock); Invergordon; Edinburgh (South Queensferry); Paris/Normandy (Le Havre), France; Southampton

12 day Royal Princess cruise (includes Kirkwall, May June, Aug)

Southampton; Guernsey (St. Peter Port); Cork; Dublin; Belfast; Glasgow (Greenock); Orkney Islands (Kirkwall); Invergordon; Edinburgh (South Queensferry); Paris/Normandy (Le Havre), France; Southampton

12 day Royal Princess cruise - With Liverpool (June, July & Aug, so probably lots of kids)

Southampton; Guernsey (St. Peter Port); Cork, (Cobh); Dublin; Liverpool; Belfast; Glasgow (Greenock); Invergordon; Edinburgh (South Queensferry); Paris/Normandy (Le Havre), France; Southampton

12 day NCL Jade (again it appears no Wales, May & Sept)

Southampton, Guernsey, Portland, England Cork (Cobh), Ireland, Dublin, Glasgow (Greenock), Kirkwall, Orkney Isles , Inverness (Invergordon), Edinburgh (Newhaven), Newcastle (Tyne), England, Southampton (London)

RCI Brillance of the Sea (July)

Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Inverness, Greenock (Glasglow), Dublin (2 days), Holyhead, WALES, Cork (Cobh), Guernsey, Amsterdam

Celebrity Eclipse - British Open cruise (July)

Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, Belgium, Cobh (Cork), Waterford, Dublin, Liverpool, Newhaven (Edinburgh 2 days ), Dover Amsterdam

It looks like the Princess with Liverpool hits the ports we'd like but really not crazy about the dates. Also Royal is bigger than I think we'd like and I think I read they have eliminated the all the way around the ship promenade desk? I really enjoyed that on the Pearl, usually 2-3 miles a day.

School holidays in England in 2018 from 16Jul to 5Sep, with a half term 23May to 01Jun. In Scotand 27Jun to 20Aug with no half term, the education system or different in both countries,

Like Guernsey , the Bank of Northern Ireland , and several Scottish banks issue their own currency notes, valid only in each country, though you could change them at face value in English banks, most English shops think you are trying to pay with monopoly money

  12. To reply to 29 smoking is not allowed on any form of public transport, coaches, buses or trains or in railway stations. In public places now very restricted so in no restaurants, cafés, pubs and in many open areas also restricted. Smoking in the UK now is seen as anti-social and frowned upon.

And heavily taxed a pack of 20 is around USD10/12

No immigration between any of the countries of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

  13. theres is a post on this board dated 6th aug 2017 titled "possible to do st Andrews" which should give you the information your looking for.

A couple of comments re some of the replies you have had, yes Glasgow is about an hour from Edinburgh, but cruises berth in Greenock which is to the west of Glasgow again about a hour by road or rail so that's 2 hours travel time each way. Yes Kirkwall and Lerwick can be cold and windy but when the sunshine they can be lovely.I don't know if you knew that these ports are farther north than Ketchikan,Juneau and in Lerwick case Skagway,

You should look at the Cruisescotland.com website for information on Scottish ports
