  1. They had to do this to keep American customers. The reality is that it is increasingly becoming an expectation that Americans have decent access to email and other internet capability, even while on vacation. It would get to the point, sometime, that US workers wouldn't be able to take a vacation without decent internet.

And the increasingly cloud-based, entrepreneurial economy will also steer people to vacations where reliable internet that doesn't take forever is a must-have, not an amenity. Someone on our recent TA said that his wife, who owns a solo CPA firm, simply can't go on a cruise if she can't work while on board - and this is not unusual for the new economy in which there are so many solo practitioners and contractors. She had gotten up at 4:00 that morning because it was a payroll processing day and that was the only time she would be able to download the data packets for processing.

There was only so long that people were going to be okay with that. Very nice that NCL is joining the times! I'll love having "real" internet access.

    .

    Email takes VERY little bandwidth.

  2. Hi everyone!

So I just got assigned my guarantee balcony cabin for my Getaway cruise on May 22. I am mid ship Deck 14 which is the highest deck of cabins.

Has anyone had a balcony cabin on Deck 14 on the Getaway before? Thoughts? I believe the buffet is above us, would that be noisy early in the morning?

Based on pictures, it looks like there is an over hang from the above deck that jets out at least a few feet passed the balcony. Just wondering if anyone has any comments about that?

    Thanks!!

Being under the buffet is something I would not pick given the choice. You may not have a noise issue but it is probably higher there than most other places.

I don't think any part of the ship has PASSED any other part of the ship. :D

  3. Hello,

If you have the UBP, can you partake in the beverages in the mini-fridge? I have not sailed NCL before so I am assuming there are beverages in the room frig. :D

It is called a minibar and no it is not included as clearly documented on the NCL web site.

  4. Can we bring the following on board so we do not have to contribute to this madness?

    1) A portable clothes washer and dryer to do our own laundry (no paying for laundry).

    2) Bagged air so I can have my own clean air to breathe (air for free).

    3) A personal assistant to give out tips and remove the DSC (ya know).

    4) Two dixie cups a a length of string to reach anywhere on the ship for communications, one set per person in my group (no need to pay for an app).

    5) Packaged filet mignons and my personal chef to cook dinner for me every night (avoid the specialty dining fee).

    6) My own lounge chairs so I can avoid chair hogs.

  5. The online agent sent a deceptive email with this:

    "NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

    BIG NEWS!!!

As of May the Free Beverage Package will no longer be offered as a free perk. Get yours now!"

To me they make it appear that they have information that it is going away.

You are inferring that. They know what we know. The current offer is set to expire soon. It is called marketing on the agents part. When you get that envelope in the mail that says 'very important open immediately' do you eagerly open it or do you throw it away like most people who realize that it is junk mail? ;)

  6. My daughter is going on NCL for her Honeymoon. If people buy them on board credit and they end up not using it all will it be refunded to them after the cruise and how is it refunded? Thanks

Refundable OBC is refundable, non-refundbale OBC is not. Purchased OBC is.

  7. Not really. If you read, this information is very available. People need to have knowledge about who makes what, and then decide where to spend their money

You seriously decide where to spend your money based on what the employees of a business are paid? Wow!

  8. You can buy a case of water for $2 to $3? That's about half what we usually pay. But I agree, $71 makes it very pricey water!

You can bring a case of water on board. We put ours in a duffle bag and then slap a luggage tag on it, and they deliver it to the room. We usually buy it in the port city. I think we paid $8 for a case in Manhattan for our last cruise.

Why not just drink the free water on board? It is FREE and the smae H2) that you are paying good money for.

  9. They serve very nice water at every meal. The buffet has a dispenser for cold tasty water.

Come to think.... there is water all across the ship. Purchasing water on the ship is incredibly silly although not as silly as lugging bottled water onto the ship.

+1000 and usually the people who just have to have bottled water are the tree hugger types, ironic.

  10. Do u know when they would board as we r getting there early, r they one of the first ones to board?

YOU board after the VIP guests of various level thus they ARE one of the first to board. When you ARE getting there will not make a difference.

  11. We don't drink much, don't plan to use the spa, will be doing our own excursions. Already have the SDP, might pick up premium coffee, might order room service and might gamble a (very) little bit. I expect that the amount I deposit in the on board account will cover all or most expenses.

Is there any advantage to purchasing on board credit to apply to the account? Or is it better to just leave the on board expense to the credit card?

"Better" is a highly subjective term and that is a question that only you can answer for yourself. Some people prefer to not buy any OBC under the guise of not giving away the interest on the money even though savings interest in less than 1% now. Other want to minimize their final bill amount as much as possible. Decide which is the better option for you and go with it.

  12. Hi. My dd will be sailing witht her girlfriends on Sky in June. Can I prepay her gratuties without having to pay for the other two girls?

    Thanks.

I will assume you mean DSC since gratuities are 100% optional and up to each person to pay as he sees fit. I believe you can only prepay the DSC for everyone. The only way that you might be able to do what you are asking is to all you PCC and pay for the passenger(s) who want to do so.
