Anyone cruised on the Great Lakes? Any input on particular cruise lines?
Thanks.

We did the Black Forest tour and Colmar Village in September - enjoyed both. LFS517 reminded me of one of the best aspects of any of the included tours - the guides. They all shared bits of their personal lives and experiences which was so interesting in addition to the expected historical info.

On our Viking cruise in September, the ship was not able to dock in Kinderdijk because, I assume, of over crowding. We took a short, but very scenic, bus ride from the ship to the windmills. Actually very nice since we saw a bit of the countryside.

I am not convinced that Viking has given up for good on cruising the Mississippi.
I suspect at some point they will find a way to do it within the current law.
I hope you're correct. On our cruise in September, Viking announced the Mississippi plans and we were looking forward to taking that itinerary with Viking because of the great service we experienced on the Rhine Getaway.

We were advised to always purchase trip insurance from a third party rather than tour operator. The thought being that the operator could be making decisions that impact a potential claim. Not sure if that's valid, but was the advice received. We bought Allianz through AAA. Had a minor flight cancellation claim that was handled quickly and efficiently.

On our cruise this past September I believe the only excursion that sold out before the trip was the Rudeshiem dinner. The only optional tour we did was Colmar, and would recommend it - a delightful town.

We're on Viking Rhine Getaway and wondering about extension cord. My husband uses a CPAP. We always travel with an extension cord because there is not always a electrical outlet located close enough to the bed. Any concerns with a standard cord without surge protector?

To add to the discussion, my cousin was subjected to special screening at airport security because of a substance on her hands. Turns out that her heart medication, which she had taken prior to arriving at the airport, contained nitroglycerin - naturally a banned substance - and traces remained on her hand. She was told that had she not had the original prescription bottle in her possession, she may have been detained much longer.

Thanks, Jeff. We know Viking provides transfers and transportation between Basal and Lake Como - is it train or bus? How long is the trip? And in Lake Como are there any tours included? Any recommendations on best areas to visit?

We're on Viking's Rhine Getaway departing Amsterdam on September 9, 2017 and doing the post extension in Lake Cumo. Interested to hear from others who have done this extension - comments, suggestions?

Thanks, what I've found also is that itineraries seem to include one or two days open sailing. We prefer more activity when we travel. Have loved river cruising in Europe with tours each day - perhaps will book another.
