1. We have my grandson (19) and a friend coming on a cruise with us. Since you have to have an adult (21) in the room, we were thinking of a way of getting one of us in the room with each of us then switching after. Can you get away with doing this?

You can book them in their own room and they do not have to do the ship. Age 18-20, have no restrictions on where they can be on the ship as long as their guardian is on the ship. (13-17 need to be within 3 rooms of guardian. Under 13, needs to do the switch).

**EDIT: This only applies to your kids (or grandkids). So, you would need to do the switching if you bring someone that isn't related to you. ***

  2. Your reasoning does not make sense to me. The fun shops do not sell liquor to anyone under 21 and neither do liquor stores on land. The vast majority of people who are smuggling alcohol onboard are over 21. This change which greatly inconveniences the passengers who legally purchase alcohol onboard will do nothing to prevent under age drinking.

As someone who has underage drank on ships, yes, this move does prevent underage drinking. (That is why it has been in place for 4+ years during spring break). Basically, CCL wants 100% control over the liquor on board, which means don't get shocked if bon voyage is eventually impacted. Although with bon voyage, there isn't a wide spread knowledge of how to order booze to a room before the trip.

  3. Cruising is great because everyone has different things they like... which is why these changes get people so riled up on both sides. There will always be people who like something and people who don't care about it (and for some reason, can't figure out why it might be a big deal for someone else).

Having to get the booze on debark day is not a big deal to me because I rarely fly to cruises and rarely buy more than one bottle. I can see this being a problem for someone who is not in the same "boat" as me. But, on a cruise during spring break on the Dream, I did have to retrieve alcohol on debark day and the process was very smooth. So, for what it is worth, the picking it up doesn't seem to be a huge problem.

Finally, I see the combination of the 2 changes in the past couple of days as more to do with underage drinking then profits. Given that I was in the 16-20 yr old group on a decent amount of cruises, I know the ways that this group gets alcohol and water bottles/last night booze were two of the easiest/most common ways. My guess (and this is 100% a guess) is that CCL has been getting in trouble for underage drinking and probably has been settling suits about it.

  4. This isn't really a new policy as they have been doing it for a long time (at least 4+ years) on sailings with a lot of 16-20 yr olds (spring break and some Christmas cruises). Every time, I have had no problem picking up liquor and it is pretty quick. My guess is that sales aren't really going to be hurt that much for the CCL shop and they don't really care about anything else.

  5. Help me please. I know we sailed Carnival on July 3, 2005 - we set sail the day before my DH big 50! I know we left Los Angeles, to Catalina, then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico and a day at sea. But I don't remember the ship. Carnival still does this trip, but I don't think we were on the ships that do it now.

So if anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it a lot!

You were on the Carnival Paradise

  6. MCC is right. At least one 25 or older must be booked in each cabin. However, after boarding, you can go to Guest Services to have your room keys switched.

Here's hoping you have a wonderful cruise. Bon Voyage!

    No, this is not correct.

If everyone in a cabin is 21+, there doesn't need to be anyway over the age of 25. If there is someone under the age of 21, a 25 year old needs to be on board as their guardian (doesn't need to be in same cabin... there is a bunch of information about how far they can be away, etc.).

"Carnival's policy regarding guests traveling alone or traveling with minors:

Guests are required to be 21 years old (on embarkation day) to travel. Guests under the age of 21 must be accompanied in the same stateroom by a parent or guardian 25 or older. The exceptions Carnival will make to this policy are:

Guests Under the Age of 21 Traveling with Parents / Grandparents

Guests under the age of 13

    • Minors can be booked in separate staterooms, only if booked next door or directly across the hall from the Parents/Grandparents stateroom.

Note: Minors 13 and under may only be booked in a balcony stateroom with the Parents/Grandparents"; this also applies to connecting staterooms.

    Guests 13 - 17 years of age

    • Minors can be booked in separate staterooms, by up to 3 staterooms in between the minor stateroom and the Parents/Grandparents stateroom.

Note: Minors age 13 may only be booked in a balcony stateroom with the Parents/Grandparents; this also applies to connecting staterooms.

Guests 18 years of age and older

    • Minors are 18 and older not required to be booked within close proximity nor on the same deck as the Parents/Grandparents. However, they will place you as close together as possible.

Guests Under the Age of 21 NOT Traveling with Parents / Grandparents

The minor must travel with a guardian 25 years of age or older in the same stateroom. The exceptions Carnival will make to this policy are:

    • Legally married couples and same gender union couples less than 21 years of age must provide Carnival with legal proof of marriage/civil union at least two weeks prior to sailing.

    • For those guests whose marriage/civil union will not take place until closer to the sailing date, they must bring proof of their marriage/civil union to embarkation. Failure to do so will result in denied boarding and no refund.

    • Documentation: marriage license issued by the County Clerk’s Office; legal proof of civil union; for newly married couples: a copy of the marriage license application signed by the official that performed the ceremony.

Infants must be at least six months old (twelve months for Transatlantic, Hawaii and South America cruises) to be eligible to travel.

Guest ages will be verified at embarkation. Guests not conforming to this policy will be denied boarding and assessed a 100% cancellation penalty. NO exceptions will be made at embarkation.

Please note that adult guests are responsible for the safety and behavior of their minor guests. Our Camp Carnival®, Circle "C" and Club O2 programs features supervised activities for children 2-17.

Spa Carnival and fitness center: Guests under 12 years of age are not permitted in these facilities. Guests between the ages of 12 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

All guests 16 years of age or older must provide an official photo I.D. When traveling with a minor and both parents/legal guardians are not cruising, we strongly recommend bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent/legal guardian authorizing the minor to travel with you. This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security. Please note that a notarized letter to this effect is required if debarking with children in Mexico."

  7. Good points. I saw an interesting segment on TV recently, with Dr. Sanjay Gupta donning protective gear, then smearing chocolate syrup on parts of himself to represent bodily fluid exposure. He carefully removed the gear, but nevertheless managed to "contminate" himself in a couple places. Properly removing these suits appears to be more easily said than done!

This is the case with any type of PPE (personal protective equipment). It is all about getting it off (and if reusable, decontaminated and back on). Some of the best PPE equipment can be sprayed down to kill everything that is on the outside (in this case with bleach/chlorine) but that is not always available. Given the time this disease can live outside the body, I wouldn't be surprised if several of the caregivers have been infected trying to get their suits back on.

I find it interesting the amount of misinformation about ebola out there. It is fairly difficult to catch if you are just sitting next to the person (unlike other diseases). But the amount of contaminated fluid from an ebola patient when they are sick is what makes these outbreaks hard to contain. (Thomas Eric Duncan's family lived with him while he was sick and didn't get ebola. They also were seen on a blanket that has his sweat and they were fine. Sweat has yet to be proven as a means of transferring the disease as the whole disease has not been found in sweat.)

  8. My question is if Ebola is only spread by transmission of bodily fluids how are these Doctors and Nurses catching it when they are dressed in hazmat suits?

I witnessed a murder-suicide in my home town on Tuesday at the train station. The body was decapitated and placed in two different spots in the street. I thought it was a Halloween hoax as I drove by. The murderer threw himself in front of the train that my wife was on. What are the odds of witnessing that? I guess my odds of contacting Ebola have just gone up.

There are a couple of things that factor into the hazmat suits not "working". The first is not all of the personal treating those have the best protective gear, although the protective gear in question may not be the problem.

The temperature in the area of the out break is fairly warm (86 degrees or so) and this means that it gets even hotter in those suits. Since the doctors can only stay in the suits for a short period of time, they have to take them off and put them on quite frequently. With the amount of contaminated body fluid coming out of patients, it is extremely important to follow protocol when taking off the suits, cleaning them, and putting them back on... This is where the main problem is. My guess is (having worked in similar suits) that in the heat and humidity, people are making errors in taking their suits off.

  9. Then why did Carnival say the compensation (to Magic passengers) was for missing a port?

If they got refused entry in GC by the authorities for ebola, than they should get the same refund. Missing a port can be for a variety of reasons and the compensation for each is and should be different.

  10. There are places set up to handle Ebola, and people who fail to follow the orders of the CDC can be transported to those places against their will.

Under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S. Code § 264), the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to take measures to prevent the entry and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States and between states.

The authority for carrying out these functions on a daily basis has been delegated to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    CDC’s Role

Under 42 Code of Federal Regulations parts 70 and 71, CDC is authorized to detain, medically examine, and release persons arriving into the United States and traveling between states who are suspected of carrying these communicable diseases.

As part of its federal authority, CDC routinely monitors persons arriving at U.S. land border crossings and passengers and crew arriving at U.S. ports of entry for signs or symptoms of communicable diseases.

When alerted about an ill passenger or crew member by the pilot of a plane or captain of a ship, CDC may detain passengers and crew as necessary to investigate whether the cause of the illness on board is a communicable disease.

It seems you are the one ignorant of the law.

In addition to this, Executive Order 13295 also provides for the ability to quarantine people (and now specifically mentions Ebola).

    http://www.cdc.gov/sars/quarantine/exec-2004-04-03.html

  11. Do people realize that the government cannot stop all the people from leaving the ship.

There is no law that allows a government entity to kidnap someone and hold them even if they have Ebola.

The government cannot stop a citizen from moving around freely.

The government cannot force anyone to give a blood sample.

The government cannot release any medical records nor name anyone that has or might have Ebola.

Also, it appears that there is a 50% rate people that have no symptoms but did/do have the Ebola virus. So, 50% of the people that get Ebola don't show and symptoms and do not die.

I just wanted to address some of these because they are mostly all wrong.

The government can stop people from leaving the ship under section 361 of the Public Health and Safety Act. In addition, Ebola has specifically been added to the list of diseases included under those that the government can forcefully quarantine for. "Executive Order 13295 lists Ebola as one of several diseases that if suspected, provide for “the apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of suspected communicable diseases.”

So the government can restrict travel, can quarantine you, they can "kidnap" you and force you to stay somewhere. They cannot release information about you, however, your information will come out through 3rd parties because of the society we live in.

There is a history of Ebola infecting people but not fully. In other words, only part of the disease gets into the blood stream. Because it is only part, the individual never gets symptoms and never is contagious. There is some thought in the research community that this may be a key to a cure for Ebola.

  12. What is the difference between the 2 ports listed, Port of fort Lauderdale & the port everglades port? I thought they were one in the same but looking at ships in port they have different ships listed for each. We are coming into dock at Port everglades and transferring to a ship docked in port of fort lauderdale. Are they far apart as far as a cab ride.

    Same port

  13. Not so sure it would have better upside potential.

Once upon a time Carnival was the leader in innovation in the cruiseline industry.

For past couple of years they seem to have lagged behind and now seem to be the low price leader.

Hopefully that will change in the near future as the new management team does what it is being paid to do..

I think CCL is not a leader in innovation but a leader in low price... However, Carnival as a corporation still is the overall leader. (CCL is 24 of over 100 ships Carnival operates). They have a wide array of new builds coming out across a bunch of different lines right now which are fairly exciting, including a new 40,000 ton seabourn ship (hardly low price).

  14. Hahaha!:p

I'm a nurse, and I remember from Nursing 101: urine is actually sterile.

Doesn't really make the thought of swimming in it any more palatable, though, does it?:o

Yeah, my original CPO instructor told us horror stories of what bad pool operations were like and that even the best kept pool is only one moron/child away from being contaminated. There isn't any real risk from urine in pools, it simply messes with chemicals and makes running a pool more expensive.

The hot tubs on the ship are deliberately not hot for 2 reasons (both of them health related):

1- Maintaining a hot tub is extremely difficult especially one with a high bather load. Increased temperature makes keeping chemicals right even more difficult and thus makes it harder to keep water in balance.

2- Adults and Children tend to sit in the hot tubs on ship far too long. Adults also tend to drink alcohol in hot tubs. Both of these cause overheating and dehydration.

I would guess that the hottest hot tub on the ship would be around 95 degrees give or take a few degrees.

  15. Of course they eventually grow up with good values and mature sensibilities.

But when they are younger, and have not yet developed good impulse control, just knowing something is frowned upon is not the same thing as not doing it! Geez.

Reminds me of a story from my pool operating days:

A mother came up to one of the lifeguards of a pool I operated and forced her kid apologize for peeing in the pool, then asked the lifeguard what he was going to do about it... Lifeguard laughed and said nothing, half the people in the pool are currently peeing... I got a strongly written letter about how she was going to the CDC and other agencies to get the pool shut down.

Urine in pools does nothing in limited quantities. What it does do, is make running a pool more expensive as it messes with some chemicals. If a ton of people go into a pool and pee at the same time and the pool is indoor, it may be possible for people to get lung irritation and maybe even sick. Urine combines with chlorine to form trichloramine and cyanogen chloride. The gas from these can be dangerous in large quantities. Pools with lots of urine may also give off a chlorine smell.

  16. I have personally seen 10 college aged cruisers that were in the hot tub for several hours, drinking many buckets of beer. Not once did they get up to go to the restroom.

This post may be gross to some but it comes from a decent amount of experience and training in pool/spa chemicals.

If the pool is fairly well maintained, urine makes no difference. It is fecal matter that is the way people get sick. Crypto is one major one that is found a lot of the times and is a pain to get out of a pool. Fecal matter doesn't only come from accidents but I am not gonna get into that more... Cruise ships have a big advantage over land based pools as they can dump and refill much easier/quicker/cheaper.

On my next trip, I will carry my tester kits and report back (should be in Nov). I always test in hotels but have never tested on a ship.

  17. In fresh water pools at sea (I think CCL has a couple in the spa areas and I believe all hot tubs are fresh water):

Hot Tub- Bromine with Sodium Carbonate/Sodium Hydrogen Sulfate to control pH

Pools- Hypochlorite with combo so Sodium Bicarb/Hydrochloric Acid to control pH

    In sea water pools:

Water is from ocean, treated and cleaned. Unsure of the treatment chemical outside of filtration (never asked). Most pools are completely drained nightly as this is easy to do.

The hot tubs around the ship are kept at a relatively low temperature for safety and sanitary reasons.

The water overall is safe but I wouldn't put any of it in my mouth.;)

  18. My cruise document identifies it as "Promotional Onboard Credit - Casino Non-Refundable".

As far as poker chips, I was referring to the chips that are used when playing Blackjack.

Any drink you buy will go against this OBC. In the event you do not spend $40 on items during the course of the cruise, you will not get a check for the difference.

  19. A large sale of stock by a corporate insider should always be considered by a shareholder.

As mentioned above, it is usually just for estate or tax purposes. Usually.

Was planned since Feb... Sold a lot of shares then and was spacing out the remaining offloading over time.

There are a lot of reports he may be gearing up to make a run at buying a premier league team. Would be interesting to see how much money he would pump into one.

  20. I was trying to price out a vacation for my family, we would need 4 cabins. 8 adults and 2 kids. But when I tried to look at pricing for 4 it gave my fill price for 4 adults. The kids at time of saily would be 11 and 2.5 years old. Do you still pay full price?

The cheapest way to book this would be the 2 adults and 2 kids in 1 cabin. then 2 adults in each of the other three.

There are price breaks on the 3rd and 4th person in each room.

  21.
Interesting. I did not know that. I guess it made sense for them to get that order if they were close by the action. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see carnival try to recoup any costs they incurred in complying with this order from someone, namely the US government. Do you know if the coast guard collected the rescued people or let them stay on the ship until they could go thru customs and immigration back on the mainland?
Coast Guard took the people which is what was part of the delay. They were then returned to Cuba per Wet/Dry foot rule.
  22. Funny thing happened to me yesterday... Opened my mail and got a 20% off all items coupon from a certain retailer... In the bottom, it says "coupon not valid on sale items"... So when I went to the store and picked out a pair of shoes normally $80 and currently on sale for $50, they wouldn't take an additional 20% off... Those dishonest jerks. Running multiple sales at once and letting me pick which one was better but not combine them. Completely bait and switch :(

  23. Well, it is not my intention to offend people, as I said, I'm a Cuban-american, and this is my country. I know that this is the most generous country in his immigration laws. There are bad and good stories of course, and not all of them have a happy end, but not better place to live the the USA, IMO.

I made my comment specifically for the people that were saying just get them back...everybody has the right to agree or not with the laws, it is the law and we have to respect it, but some sensibility is very much appreciated.

Now, about the dry/wet policy, it is still in place, nothing has changed. If a Cuban does not arrive to the shore, and by shore I mean dry land, it will get deported. The policy was created in 1994 to avoid a massive flow of immigrants from Cuba.

For a good read about the dry/wet policy and being aboard a cutter, search for Yasiel Puig. Puig was a star baseball player for Cuba who, while trying to defect, was picked up by a coast guard cutter. He spent some time on the cutter before being returned to Cuba. He later successfully defected and now starts for the LA Dodgers. (All of this occurred under the current administration)

  24. August 24 this year. The rate is still low. However, if you compare 2 adults in a similar cabin and 2 adults and 2 kids in a similar cabin, it is not a true " kids sail for free" promo, in my opinion. I just did it again and made sure to only compare base rates and it's about $420 more for 4 people as opposed to 2 people.

I would compare it more to a place that doesn't allow you to use two coupons. So you have to select the one that saves you the most money.

Looking at June 1 on Conquest:

    4 No Sail Free- 2433

    4 with Sail Free- 2135

    2 People- 1446+228(double taxes and fees)=1674

So you get the Fun Select rate (which is no promotions) in order to get kids promotion.
