Hi @CaityMarie, congratulations on your coming honeymoon!  We’ve not ventured to Alaska yet, still chasing traditionally warmer climate destination itineraries. All of the reports we’ve heard, including one I had just yesterday with a young co-worker who went there this past summer with HAL on their first cruise ever, was fabulous.  I’m sure you’ll have super time.

As an aside, we’ve visited PA numerous times the past few years for the NW Cup DH MTB Series at Dry Hill, which more often than not on race weekends is Not So Dry Hill. 😉  I can almost drive the Whitby Island - Coupeville - Port Townsend - PA stretch with my eyes closed now.

    Thank you!

Most of the time when you anything outdoors here it rains.... We went and looked at a wedding venue and it downpoured! We haven't made it to Vancouver, but would like to. We are possibly going to Victoria for my birthday next month.

We went on a Carnival cruise last year to the Caribbean and it rained a lot. Also, we didn't care for carnival. My cousin has cruised on HAL twice and loved it. And we didn't want to have to fly to get anywhere.

Awesome, we were on the Nieuw Amsterdam's Eastern Caribbean itinerary back in Dec 2016.  Loved it!  Great ship, super crew, nice ports: Trip Report.

It's a balmy near-freezing 5C degrees here in Vancouver, BC.  Drizzling rain, too.  Can't wait to get down to the Caribbean ourselves in just under 4 weeks.  Woo hoo!!!

We aren't too far away....we are in Port Angeles, WA. Going on to Oosterdam for ou r honeymoon in July to Alaska. Have you been?

  3. Congratulations and all best wishes on your upcoming marriage . I sailed Oosterdam in Alaska and it was a terrific cruise.

    Thank you!

We've been looking at YouTube videos on the Oosterdam. I'm trying to find the best possible deal at the moment. This is my mission today on my day off to book our honeymoon. :D:D

  4. We are going on our honeymoon on 9/28/18 with HAL! We can't wait!! I am traveling under my maiden name, and will change my name once we return. It was just one less thing to worry about post wedding and pre-honeymoon!

    Have fun!

That totally makes sense! Which ship are you going on for your honeymoon? Would love to hear stories when you return?

  5. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.

Alaska is a wonderful place for a honeymoon.

    Enjoy your first HAL cruise.

Thank you!!! We are super excited. My fiance lived in Ketchikan when he was younger but he doesn't remember it much. And I've never been to Alaska. Luckily we live about an hour and a half from the ferry to get to Seattle.

  6. If you're not going to have time to change your name, yes, book in your maiden name, and use the maiden name passport to travel. When traveling names on the booking and the ID used must match.

After I made my post, I realized that we are getting married on a Saturday, and the Dept of Licensing is closed on Monday. And then I'm working Tuesday through Friday and then they are closed again. So, I will have to change it after the cruise anyways.

  7. Hello,

I'm planning on booking our Honeymoon cruise with Holland America on the Oosterdam for July 21st. This will be our second cruise, but first with HAL. We are not going super elaborate, and just going with an Interior Stateroom. We had an Oceanview on our first cruise, and we weren't really impressed.

We aren't big alcohol drinkers, so we are going to go with the Quench package since it fits us the best. Although, we are planning on getting a drink card to prepay for a few.

We are getting married on July 13, 2019. I'm going to book with my maiden name, so should I wait to change my name? Since we will be going to Victoria BC, I have my passport and that won't get changed in time.

What should I expect from a cruise on HAL? My fiance and I are 34 and 30 (respectively) but have birthdays before we get married. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated! :ship:

  8. My sister and I stayed on the ship in Montego Bay on one cruise. We were far from bored. Chocolate Extravaganza, special spa prices, ample loungers available in serenity area and all over in sun and shade, no crowds.

We don't all cruise for the ports, and we don't all want every cruise to be the same experience.

Thank you! These comments about being bored and such not doing excursions have really not been fair. The excursions have been almost $100 per person, and we just dont have the money. We'd much prefer to spend what spending money we have saved up for things like souvenirs. My mom will be watching our animals for over a week, I'd like to bring her a gift.

We are still going to get off the ship and walk around in port. We are creative people, we will still have fun! Plus there is a ton to do on board thr cruise ship!

  9. What do you plan on doing then? You should really do some research on these ports. In Belize for example there is a 20 min tender ride to a small port - not much at all to do here. Likewise in Cozumel - there isn't much to do in the area we have docket at recently. If I got off both these places without an excursion I would be disappointed. The excursions people have recommended such as Altun Ha/River Wallace will not disappoint. Also, Cozumel is easy to do on your own - take a cab to Money Bar or any other such place and relax and enjoy some local food. But staying just around the port is a big no.

Roatan is a nice port built by carnival with a nice beach - but you are missing a beautiful island without exploring.

I opted to saying that we decided not to go on any excursions because saying that we can't afford to go on any is a lot more embarrassing. But thank you for pointing it out! I have done research!!!

  10. This.

I've visited Mayan ruins in three of the ports you mention, and, if it's your first trip, I'd definitely recommend this one. It's almost like two excursions in one, because you see the ruins, but you also get the boat ride down the river, and see all the amazing wildlife. I think it's called Altun Ha and River Wallace, or something like that. Depending on what group they put you in, you'll either go to the ruins first (by bus), ad then take the boat back, or do it the other way around. Highly recommend!

This one sounds fun. Although I have to be careful about being near the rivers due to being allergic to mosquitoes.

We did the Coba Mayan pyramids via Cozumel and it was amazing. It has the only pyramid in Mexico that you can still climb to the top of. I highly recommend it. You can read a review of it in my review from the Dream cruise I took in 2015 (link is in signature).

There are no Mayan Ruin sin Roatan (Mahogany Bay).

Ruins in Cozumel are small. Trip to Tulum, which is very scenic but small late era city and you are restricted to guided pathways, is very long for the amount of time you spend there.

In Belize, Altun Ha is closer by, fully excavated easily walked, lower cost to do this via private vendor. Xunantunich as others have mentioned is a good set of ruins to visit, with great views from the top of the temple. Lamanai, is a river/bus trip and long walk through jungle to partially excavated ruins but distance leaves you with very little time to explore.

In Costa Maya, if you do a private excursion with Native Choice, you will get a more immersed sense of lower Yucatan Mayan culture and first class guides. Outside of the beach or the boring overpriced cruise port, it's about your only option in Costa Maya. But reconsider doing ruins here if you have an early afternoon departure from CM.

  11. Hi, we are going to be traveling on the Carnival Magic from November 11th to the 18th. We will be visiting Cozumel, Belize City, Mahogany Bay and Costa Maya. My question is which port would it be best to do an excursion to see the Mayan Ruins? I don't want to miss out on this awesome opportunity, but I also want to make sure I have fun. This is my first cruise & my first time leaving the country (other than to Victoria, B.C which is a ferry ride away). I also am afraid of paying a lot for an excursion and it being less than awesome.

Thank you for your input! [emoji2]

  12. What has your doctor recommended? That's probably important advice to follow [emoji4]

Fortunately my soon to be father in law has been my physician for my bug bite allergies in the past and will be on the cruise with me.

Maybe the use of the word severe was incorrect. I don't go into anaphylaxis or anything. I tend to get overly swollen bites and have had several bites (mosquitoes and spiders) turn into MRSa infections. If they stayed just bites that itched it wouldnt be the problem. However the main treatment of MRSa is penicillin/amoxicillin, in which I am severely allergic to.

Past experiences are bug spray never really works, I get bit anyway. I don't like the idea of deet due to the toxins.

I've been told they make bracelets and clip ons and haven't used them so I wonder if those are good.

I dont plan on doing any excursions in the jungle. Maybe one to go look at ruins or such, but mostly going to self guide at shops and through town.

    Thanks...

  13. I know this sounds silly, and seems like there is a simple solution. I am severely allergic to Mosquitoes. I know that there are more mosquitos in warmer climates, so I am assuming that there are going to be a few on our cruise. We are going to the Carribean in November. We will be visiting Cozumel, Belize, Mahogany Bay & Costa Maya. I don't really want to coat myself in bug spray, plus when I have in the past I still get bites. Does anyone have any tips or ideas?
