  1. Rather than run the risk of missing my International flight (we live in Rural Oregon) we ALWAYS fly to our departure airport the night before, spend the nite and fly out the next morning.

It only takes one time of a commuter flight having issues or having a weight & balance problem leaving luggage and or passengers behind to ruin an international trip. In our case Award Air in First Class. We now always get to our International Gateway, stay at an airport Hilton product and then fly direct.

We always do this too. One extra night before and after scheduled departure. We live in Atlanta but our SmarTours flight leaves out of JFK. We fly up the day before and no stress should our flight be late getting from Atlanta to JFK. Totally worth another hotel night for peace of mind.

  2. Hi gj,

You have a great trip ahead of you.

Vienna will be your last stop in the Eurozone.

Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania use their own currency.

Last year when we did a Bucharest to Vienna I got about $50 worth of each of the currencies - just in case.

You can use your leftover currency to tip the crew.

This is the exact trip we are taking next month. I looked up all the currencies online and all our ports are in countries that use their own money. We will be taking two different credit cards that do not charge foreign transaction fees. Of course everyone on our boat will be in the same boat (pun intended), so I'm sure we will get advice from more experienced travelers and also our main tour guides also about how best to handle the monies. Some stops don't have a lot of free time so could probably get by with cards. Of course a little bit of the different monies brought home for the grandkids would be fun.

  3. Hi Liz.

We did a similar trip last Fall.

It is safest to have a resto, hotel or whoever call a cab for you. Flagging one on the street can be verrrryy costly.

You don't need a silk scarf.

Here are examples of scarfs in Middle and Eastern Europe

  4. Hubby and I are going on first cruise ever. Vantage Danube Discovery from Vienna to Bucharest - 15 days. I couldn't find the answer to these questions anywhere so here goes. I have naturally very curly hair. Is it windy on the Danube? If so, I will probably invest in a couple of silk scarves if I don't want to look like I've been in a wind tunnel.

We will be visiting Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. I don't have huge flashy diamonds, but I'm wondering if it would be better to leave them at home and just wear my gold wedding band. We've traveled all over the UK but this will be our first trip out of our comfort zone. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. We are SO looking forward to our trip!

  5. IME there aren't even any nights called "formal" or any sort of dress-up. There may be a Captain's dinner, but it's not about formal dress. AMA has a special tastings restaurant that each guest can enjoy (included in fare) -- the food is more "formal" but people dress the same way. :)

So a nice sundress or slacks and blouse would be acceptable? Hubby could do khakis and a nice golf shirt? Depending on the weather mid April.
