  1. Your best options are to save Tulum for when you are vacationing on the mainland near there or use a cruise excursion; the recent issues with the ferries between PDC and Cozumel have made it even harder than before to do this independently from Coz and not risk missing the ship.

I took your advice... planning a day trip on the east side of Cozumel with an early morning stop at San Gervasio. I'm glad to avoid all the hassle. Ty!

  2. As stated above be sure to research thoroughly and have access to plenty of cash in case of an accident.

Oh yeah lol... No worries there! This cruise is a whole year away and I've already researched the heck out of it. I do with every trip I take. The car rental place I found has been there forever and has all really good reviews on all the travel review sites. I've spoken with them a couple times already and will be reserving online before the cruise. But I need to contact them again and ask about insurance. I already knew about the possibility of the port being the way far out one and had accounted for that in my schedule/plans. Thanks for the additional info!:cool::cool:

  3. The car rental prices in Mexico are very inexpensive, but the insurance is not. Liability insurance is mandated by law for rentals. The insurance was twice as much as the car rental fee.

Sent from my iPad using Forums

Thank you so much for the heads up! I'll check back with the rental place I have been communicating with.

  4. Sounds like a great plan and should be easy to arrange. You might post on your roll call to see if there are others who are interested in the same private excursion.

I do have it all planned out now... I had no idea how cheap cars to rent for the day are! 35 bucks! So after a little research and sifting through the boards and forums I have come up with what sounds like the perfect Coz day for me...

    1) Get off ship super early and head to Isis for my rental (which I have already rented through their website) and it's a convertible VW bug! Soooo cute!

    2) Drive to San Gervasio asap to avoid the heat and bugs as much as possible.

    3) Head out to the east side of the island and hit up some beach side restaurants/bars for some yummy seafood, fresh coconuts, adult bevvies (not too much, I'm driving) and a nap in a hammock soothed by the breaking of blue ocean waves.

    4) Get back to town for a little shopping, drop off the car and toddle back onto the ship.

and voila! Cozumel itinerary set! DC thanks for the advice! I actually created the Roll Call for that sailing and have already posted that I'm looking for adventure buddies!;p(y):ship:

  5. Just rent a Jeep or Bug it will be close to the amount of taking taxis to both places and back to port.

I have been searching through boards an how to find a way to enjoy the east side of Coz... FABULOUS advice, so I am taking it lol! Thanks!

  6. First of all I am a solo cruiser so that makes some of theses experiences maybe a little different for me compared to a family or group... I have read more than a few times that San Gervasio is disappointing, especially compared to Tulum etc and I'd actually prefer to see Tulum but what I've read about the heat, the huge crowds and being rushed sounds even worse lol... So I'm asking as someone who is a HUGE history buff, especially when it comes to Goddesses (and this is a ruin built in honor of a fertility Goddess)... PLUS I've heard the east side of Coz is totally rad... So I'm wondering if this would still be a good early morning option with a little bit of shopping, bar hopping and a skosh of beach time for someone like me?

*I'll be hiring a private taxi for the day...

  7. We had Faster-to-the-Fun for the first time... when we arrived at 9:45am (crazy early, no idea why the shuttle brought us there so early when they weren't even open yet), we gave our luggage to the porter, and then got in line outside the "Priority" line along with dozens of other people. And we waited, as it drizzled rain. Yuck. Not a great start to the day.

Finally, they opened the door and in we went. It took about 10 minutes to walk in, and have someone scan our boarding passes and send us directly to the FTTF seating area. No kidding, insanely fast. We got the the special area, and sat....and sat.... and sat. People started streaming in to the "regular passenger" area, and we still were sitting waiting. And waiting. Around 11am an announcement was made that they were going to start boarding at 11:30. We looked over and realized we saw some people starting up the stairs at the other end, must have been the Diamond and Platinum group. Wow. Right at 11:30 they announced FTTF to board. In 10 minutes we were onboard, heading to our room. Since we had FTTF we figured our room would be ready and we could drop off our carryon bags before heading to the Lido for lunch.

...and that is where things started to go sideways for us...

    to be continued....

I have actually read many many times that FTTF isn't really worth it...

  8. We typically sail out of NOLA. Getting to and from the airport, try Uber or Lyft. Both are right in line (if not cheaper) than taxis. We have loved our Uber drivers there!!

Find a hotel in or near the French Quarter. We have stayed in Place d'Armes, the DoubleTree on Canal and the Bourbon Orleans. All were wonderful hotels.

Be sure to be on the top deck for sail away. We love sailing down the river.

oooooohhh..... Thanks for the top deck tip. I hadn't even thought of that!

  9. So excited, just booked the Dream out of NO and leave 2 months from today!! We sailed on the Breeze twice last year so should be familiar with the ship but what differences should we expect on the Dream? Also looking to book the steakhouse and know sometimes the formal nights are different, which nights should they be? We are sailing Western Caribbean, Montego Bay, Grand Cayman & Cozumel. FTTF is sold out but hoping it becomes available but no big deal. I guess we also need find somewhere to stay in New Orleans as we will fly in the night before and stay the night we get back. Will also need to figure out transfers to and from the airport and port. Lots of fun planning ahead!!

If you're into fancy and elegant I recommend the The Hotel Monteleone. If you area cheap-o like me I suggest the Chateau Orleans. It's very inexpensive but super close to everything, located smack dab in the middle of the French Quarter... But set back on a quiet street so it's not loud at night. It even has a little courtyard and pool. You can find them on AirBnB for even lower rates. I'll be staying there in August of 2019 before sailing out on the Valor for Cozumel and Progreso and I'm SUPER DUPER excited too lol! And mine is over a year away lol! Generally the formal dinner is the second or third night depending on the length of the cruise but I have read in many different places that the best time to go the the Steakhouse is the first night. They often have special promotions like free or reduced priced bottles of wine and other neat stuff. And speaking of promotions I have also heard over and over that FTTF is not really worth it... But I don't have any personal experience with that. Hope I said something helpful :D Have a great time!

  10. I am sailing on Carnival Valor August of 2019 to Progreso and Cozumel out of NOLA. On the Carnival website there is a newer excursion that goes to Mayapan ruins, a hacienda and a cenote... So far it only has one review written about two weeks ago. This looks like the best option for an excursion in Progreso to me. I have found a tour company called Lawson's Yucatan Adventures (or something like that) online as well. They have pretty much nothing but 5 stars on every review site I've researched... and has the same type of excursion/tour. But they are much more expensive for just one person (solo cruiser here) their tour is also brand new and doesn't have a description on their site...

    http://www.lawsonsyucatanexcursions.com/

So far from what I've read about similar excursions, this is a less touristy tour with probably less people. But I've also read there is a bit of traveling involved. ****My question is; does anyone reading this know if this excursion is being offered at the pier like at other ports of call or should I book through one of the two options I previously mentioned?**** Because as we all know the same excursion the ship and most excursion websites sell are usually found right at the port of call for MUCH cheaper lol!

ALSO... I am really interested in this Lawson tour place because of all the fantastic reviews and was wondering if anyone else who might happen to be sailing out of NOLA August 26, 2019 might want to join me, maybe get a group together and pay less per person for a unique Yucatan excursion??! ;p:cool::D

  12. I know this is an older post but since I found it asking the same question originally, I thought I'd go ahead and share my thoughts...

I'm actually a first time cruiser and it's my first time in Catalina but I'm all about planning ahead so this is what I'm planning to do.

    • renting a bike at Browns Bikes ($20 for the day)
    • renting a kayak for a couple hours ( w/ coupon $20)

$5 Off at Wet Spot Rentals!

    • getting a massage and pedi @ Island Breeze Spa & Salon (kind of stupid expsensive but they have coupons and deals all over the web, especially for couples... and I DESERVE it!)
    • spending the rest of my day sampling food n booze at a couple places I found to be highly recommended on various travel sites

    1. Luau Larry's (fruity drinks and yummy nibbles & just steps to the beach!)
    2. The Lobster Trap (LOBSTER ROLLS/LOBSTER TACOS & LOCAL BEER... need I say more??!)

Just an FYI... I discovered you can create an itinerary at www.catalinachamber.com and you can email it to yourself directly from the page. Plus they have a mountain of info on what to on Catalina Island. Awesome sauce. Now ask me about Ensenada ;)

UPDATE: Going to Catalina Sea Spa instead. Better deals on better packages...

  13. We are cerebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and we will stop in Catalina and Ensenada in January. What are some fun things to do there that I may have missed out on previous trips? We have been to the casino, and kayaking. (With my Daughters not my husband) But I wanna do something super fun and exciting. There will be another couple joining us for the cruise, so I would like some ideas to toss around to them also.

    Thanks
