  1. I am sorry to see Formal Night become just another night on the ship

We enjoy dressing up and will continue to do so

I personally think those that do not want to follow the guidelines as posted - although sadly not enforced - should find a dining option other than the MDR

We feel the same way. I am also sad that people seem to dress less and less nicely in the dining room on all nights. On formal nights we are in our evening gown and tux. Other nights in the MDR we are dressed just about as nice in a cocktail dress and suit jacket. It's a big part of the experience of cruising for us to dress with glamour and enjoy the opportunity to look nice and feel special.

As far as how other people dress impacting my dressing up..... I enjoy seeing other ladies in their lovely gowns and shoes and the gentlemen in their tuxes. It just adds to the experience for me if everyone is elegant and dressy. It just doesn't seem the same if I'm in an evening gown, my handsome husband in his tux, and the table next to us is in frayed jeans and baseball caps. JMHO!

  2. Not a lot of help from me, I'm afraid..after 25+ cruises, I am still a serial over packer...I like to have options.

Have read many articles on packing less, but still not working for me. Vivienne Files does give some useful tips though.

I'm with you! I love to have options, and I love to wear a nice dress at dinner every night and a different formal gown on each formal night. My DH brings a tux and several suit jackets and pants as well. I bring quite the collection of shoes too..... sparkly dressy heels, comfy sandals, workout and running shoes, flip flops ... I think my last cruise I had at least a dozen pairs. Dressing up and with variety is part of the fun of cruising for us!

  3. I wear uncomfortable shoes when I know I'm going to be sitting. Usually church or restaurant. I'm 62 and I will put up with a lot to look nice

I'm 61 and it's all about looking great for me. I buy high end dress shoes, so they are more comfortable than most. A tip...take along flesh colored bandaids. If your shoes start to rub, a bandaid stops that.

Our last cruise I wore 3 inch cage sandals with my dinner dresses and we never used an elevator the entire 8 days. I am pretty adept at getting around in a pair of heels though. Gotta look good , always!

  4. My boyfriend and I sailed the Crown on New Year's and his favorite martini was "From Russia With Love". We cannot remember what the ingredients in it were. Anybody know? Anybody cruising soon and can find out and let us know? We'd love to recreate one here at home! Thanks all!

  5. We were on the crowns nye cruise. One of the loveliest crews we have encountered. The beds were made ok by asking for an egg crate mattress cover to be added on bed. Loved the crown grill and salty dog pub.. esp the short rib potine and the giant stacked hamburger with just about everything on it! Yum. Had a bad experience in sabatinis. Seemed really disorganized and short staffed. Took about sitting for 20 mins with no one even acknowledging us. Had to go to front stand and ask could we please have a waiter! Service was just plain awful. 45 mins to get an appetizer. Drinks never refilled etc. Food was good though..loved the 4 sea days. Great ports. Loved the long days in Curacao and Aruba. The crown may be a little older but still a great time!

We were also on this Crown NYE cruise. What a great time we had. The ship might be a little worn in spots, but it sure didn't affect or bother us in any way. The dining was excellent, the room clean and comfortable and the ABC islands a wonderful itinerary. Looking to do another Princess NYE cruise this year!

  6. Just got back from a cruise where I did everything I could to stay on track with my eating and my workouts. It's not a chore for me, it's a lifestyle, so I don't stray from it no matter where I am.

I took a couple of fitness classes on the cruise, but found them way too easy and way too sparse (just 2 of us in one class). I also weight trained 3 days, and ran 3 days. That is less than I do at home, but I found that it was doable on the cruise while still being able to enjoy the ports of call and other activities.

Food was easy. The healthy options were endless.... green salads, grilled fish, veggie omelettes, etc. I don't care anything about the desserts, so that wasn't a temptation. I enjoyed one cocktail a day (not a big drinker) and the rest of the time I drank water. Honestly, I loved how easy it was to continue my healthy life style while on a cruise vacation.... much easier than say going to Vegas or a beach resort.

  7. I am a recent widow, and ironically so is one of my best friends. We have started taking cruises together, so we aren't looking for solo cruising options since we share a cabin, but we are looking for a cruise/cruise line that caters more to older adults who are single.

We recently sailed on the Regal Princess for 7 days and while the whole experience was excellent (great food, ambiance, service, cabin, etc.), we felt that the clientele were just a bit older than we were. I'm not sure if this is just a Princess Cruise line dynamic, or if we chose the wrong time of year (early March). We enjoy a fun dance/bar scene and we enjoy fitness classes. The fitness classes were way below our level and consisted of about 3 people. I'm just saying that while we are 60 years old, we are far from sedentary or quiet. We don't play bingo and we don't want to dine with married couples. I think we were probably the only people on board who weren't married.

Please help me out. What cruise line would be best for us? What destination would be best for us? We are actively planning out next adventure and don't want to make the same mistake twice.

    Thanks for any help given!

  8. I think your ship sails on Sunday...:)

Also it's a good decision that you are bringing your own blow dryer onboard. Depending on your hair type (I have shoulder length, thick and curly hair) the Princess provided blow dryer might prove to be very inadequate. I always bring my own and have no problem with the outlets by the desk.

Yes, Sunday, sorry.... I am flying to Ft Lauderdale on Saturday.

I also have long, thick, curly hair. NO WAY I'm not taking my own super powered blow dryer! Haha! Thanks!

  9. Thanks so much for the prompt and helpful replies to my newbie questions so far!

I am just curious about this next question... I'll find out soon enough, but would love to know ahead of time. My life is very fitness oriented as I am a bootcamp instructor. I've seen that there are fitness classes on board the Regal, and am very curious as to their difficulty level. Has anyone ever done them? I'm most interested in the TRX class and the body sculpt bootcamp. Would love to hear from someone who has participated in one or both. Thanks in advance!

  10. Boarding times are a suggestion.

Show up when you want. Of course preferred boarding starts first but after that you should be on board well before 2pm. We always try and arrive by 10:30.

    Thanks so much!

There is already a hair dryer in the cabin (20 years ago, maybe not?) and it was a pretty decent one, so no real need to bring your own. It's not quite as powerful as the one you probably have at home, but it gets the job done sufficiently. You'll find it in the top drawer at the desk near the mirror. There is an outlet at the desk, also, which is the regular American type, good for curling irons/straighteners/charging one's Kindle. No need for converters or adaptors.

Thanks for your suggestion! I don't even remember if there was a hair dryer 20 years ago, but it is imperative that I have MY hair dryer! At the risk of providing more info than anybody wants to hear, I have a diffuser attachment that I use on mine that will not fit another hair dryer. I appreciate your help though! :)

  11. Welcome to Cruise Critic. You will need to plug your hairdryer in at the desk plug. There is a large mirror there.

    No adaptor needed.

The plug in the bathroom is for shavers and low voltage stuff. (no hair dryers)

Thanks so much for this helpful info!

Another question... I noticed that the boarding process is done by deck number. Our deck doesn't board until 2pm. If we were to show up before 2pm, what are our chances of boarding earlier? Or should we just chill and wait until 2pm?

    Thanks!

  12. Hello... I haven't cruised in 20 years, so essentially I'm a newbie all over again. I am sailing on the Regal Princess this Saturday. I seem to remember issues with plugging certain things like hair dryers and heat rollers into the outlets in the cabin all those years ago. I figure things have vastly improved, but I want to make sure I can plug in my hair dryer somewhere in the cabin. It isn't a 3 prong plug, but it is polarized (one prong larger than the other). Will I be able to plug in my hair dryer somewhere in the cabin, or do I need an adapter?

Thanks in advance for any info!
