Our pre cruise Lucene departure to Basel was 4 pm. If you just want to take a boat ride, you will have plenty of time that day. If you want to take the boat/cograil/gonala trip up to Mt. Pilates (highly recommended!), it's all all day excursion, do it the previous day.

We began in Nuremberg docked in an industrial area on the canal would have hated to end the trip there. We ended with a glorious last night after dinner cruise taking in the lights of Budapest from the sundeck wrapped in blankets, so fun!
The Budapest finale night was magical, a wonderful way to end the cruise!

We chose the village of Colmar tour and were very disappointed. We were not taken into anything, just a walk around that was rushed and crowded. A nice museum but not enough time to go in. We wanted to go to Colmar on our own via public bus but it was a holiday and the bus schedule was not operational. It was a quaint town but certainly not worth the 49 euro price.
We spoke to many people that took the WWII tour and they said it was wonderful, very informative and moving. I would opt for that one if I had the chance to do it over.

I would suggest taking the walk up to the top of the Dom on your own, it's around 4 euros and simple to find the entrance. The walk up is long and you want to go at your own pace rather than being held up in a group setting.
The walk to the Cathedral from the boat is around 10 min and easy to find. I would save the shipboard credit for excursions that you cannot do on your own.

Just took the same trip with Lucerne extension at the beginning. Our guide was very flexible and offered to do the walking tour at other times so we did that late afternoon the 1st day. We spent the whole 2nd day on the boat/rail/tram trip to Mt. Pilates, you can do it on your own. The last day, we took the train to Stanzerhorn. Viking offered the trip for 2 times what we paid by getting our own tickets at the train station. It was simple and within walking distance from the hotel.
Be sure to hang onto the Lucerne bus passes the guide will give you at the hotel, they are good for hop on/off all over Lucerne.
I'd be happy to help with more specific questions, you'll have a wonderful time!

Will be in Breisach for the day on June 5th and would like to go to Colmar on our own. Is there a public bus route available? Any help is appreciated!
