  1. Does anyone know of a company that rents oxygen concentrators in Barcelona?  We are cruising  out of Barcelona in October and going in a few days before we sail.   Scootaround will deliver a concentrator to the ship but not to a hotel.  In the UK Scootaround did deliver to a hotel & VRBO.   But said they don't do it in  Barcelona.  The hotel is checking into it.

My understanding is that the rule that you must be in a Viking bubble in Italy, as required by Italy, only apply when you are on the ship.

Once you are in your hotel you are free to roam in this wonderful city.

I am really hoping for a relaxation of the rules for Italy before our cruise at the New Year which has two days in Livorno before moving onto France and Spain where I can currently wander independently

We just spent 2 weeks in France only had to show our vaccine card to go into museums.  Never have had to show it in Spain. Thanks for the info on Italy

Got on board Jupiter yesterday and found out that the durations of excursions in Venice had gone up due to travel time from Fusina. What was 4 hour tour is now 5.75. As a result my first tour now overlaps with the second so had to cancel one.

And no independent exploration in Italy.   We are staying 2 extra nights in Venice. Does that mean we can’t go out of our hotel?

Does anyone know if a Dyson Airwrap hair dryer will work on the Vicking Ocean ships?  Are personal hair dryers allowed?  Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

When is your cruise?  I also have the Airwrap and was planning on taking it for our cruise in October.  I have gotten so used to using it, I don't use anything else.  It might be able to pass as a hair curler, which it is.

  5. We planned our own train to Oslo and stayed at the Thon Opera.  Great location.  We took a taxi to the Bergen train station.  We booked comfort class.  As was mentioned above try to get seats facing the direction you are traveling.  We didn't.  It would have been much nicer watching the beautiful scenery coming than going.    We were on the early train with the Viking post tour travelers.  I don't know if it often happens, but when we went to buy some food on the train they were out of most everything. The Viking travelers were given vouchers for food and I heard some of them complaining that they couldn't get what they wanted .  I would buy something beforehand or at the train station to hold us over next time.  It was a lovely trip.

  6. I am looking into emergency medical evacuation coverage to bring me home, if needed, while on a cruise.  I am covered for medical insurance, just looking for evacuation.  I have had yearly coverage with Ripcord (Redpoint) which I cancelled last year because of Covid.  Now looking at different policies.  I notice they all state from hospital to hospital.  What if emergency helicopter evacuation is required from the cruise ship?  I have been on one cruise in the Black Sea that had a helicopter evacuation.  Do any emergency evacuation policies cover the cost from the ship to the hospital?  I read that there is an agreement in "international" waters that the country's coast guard or military will pick up a passenger at no cost.  Is this true?

How do I find out if there are places near the port?

I used YELP to find a salon in Barcelona.  I was with my daughter in Siem Reap and she used YELP for a spa.  It worked out well, both places.  I found English speaking salons.

  8. The CDC recommends a Hep A and Typhoid shot for travel to Egypt. Do most travelers get the vaccines?[/

I did get Hep A while living in Egypt! I’m the only one who got sick, but my husband and 2 daughters were tested when we came home. They all were positive, but never got ill. This was in the 1980s.

I would get it if I were you.

  9. I am traveling there (non cruise trip) in two weeks. I am not concerned. I have never in all my years of traveling ever needed the services of a consulate. While there is not doubt, if something happened, it would be very helpful to have one there. I do not lose sleep over it.

True, I have traveled many places and have never needed help from the consulate. But, as I get older I am more cautious. My niece had her passport stolen last year in Rome and her phone in Paris. And if I remember correctly there were 2 different occasions on Amazing Race where passports were lost or stolen. I'm not sure why you would need to use the Consulate other than passport issue. There is an US consulate SP for a reason, it must be used. That being said, we haven't decided what we are going to do yet, because as you say we probably won't need them.

  10. Got my bid for a mini-suite accepted yesterday for this Sunday's Star sailing. I had put in for $320 pp which puts it into the top edge of the strong category. I realize that is more than a lot of folks on here would pay, but its still substantially less than what it would have cost to book a mini originally so I'm still saving a good chunk of $. We had a hull balcony originally with 3 people. After I joined CC and started looking around there were lots of posts regarding issues with tall people (I am very tall) with the bathroom and overall tightness with 3 people. When you're tall inches do matter a lot for comfort. Luckily that particular stateroom has really nothing above it , so transmitted noise shouldn't be an issue. Now we'll have a full view balcony with extra room which all are looking forward to. I also had bids in a number of SC, SE, and SG suites ranging from $850 to 1050pp which ranged from bottom of fair to middle of good.

Interesting my daughter bid on the mini suite for this Sunday 4/1/18 Star sailing and did not get it. I thought it was supposed to go to the highest bidder? They were bidding from an outside, all I can think of is that NCL wanted your balcony? Looking forward to a great cruise.

  11. Todays news indicates that Russia is ordering the US consulate in St. Petersburg closed and 60+ state department officials ( probably not all from St. Petersburg) sent home from Russia in response to the similar action by the Us after the UK poisoning.

Many booked and considering Baltic cruises may be affected. There probably will not be any American state department officials in town to help American cruise ship passengers who have problems. Travelers to St. Petersburg should check the State department website for information ( will the Moscow Consulate try to help cruise passengers in St. Petersburg or will another country's consulate help (Switzerland, Finland or ?).

Best advice, If on a ship visa or an approved Russian tour group visa, you should try extra hard to stay with the tour guide. This situation does not help those who wander away or get separated.

Hopefully CC will do a general post about this potential problem which probably affects most Baltic cruises and cruise lines.

Looks like we are the only ones concerned. We will be there in a few months, hopefully things will settle down by then. As it looks now, we might not get off the ship in SP.

  12. Our cruise on Marina in September 2017 also stopped in Honfleur from 8:30am to 11:30pm. From the Currents:

" Today in Honfleur guests may use complimentary shuttle buses provide by the local port authority to reach the City Center. The shuttle will run continuously from the ship beginning from 9:00 am, with the last shuttle returning to the ship at 8:15 pm. "

FYI on Honfleur- We were there on a Tuesday when both the Eugene Boudin Museum and Maisons Satie were closed. Honfleur is lovely and quite picturesque but can be seen in a few hours; however, it can be a lovely and relaxing day. Many people arrange for excursions to the Normandy beaches for WWII history, but this can be a long day. We personally rented a car from Sixt and drove to Giverny to visit Monet's Garden. This was a drive of approximately 1.25 hours on very good roads. Easy and rewarding and we still had plenty of time to explore Honfleur before returning to the ship on the shuttle around 8pm.

    Thanks for the information.

    Shari

  13. When you book a grand voyage, You receive a key card for the entire cruise.

As far as things to do around Southampton, we hired a driver a few years ago to see the New Forest area. It’s a beautiful area with forests and small villages.

Thanks for the information. I will check into the New Forest Area.

  14. We are on a 20 day cruise from Southampton to Stockholm that is considered a Grand Voyage, The Northern Interlude. We do not need to change cabins. What happens when we return to Southampton for the second part of the cruise when passengers will be embarking and disembarking? There are no Oceania excursions posted for that day and we want to plan a private excursion, but are not sure what time we will be able to get off. Will we need to check-in again or can we just get off with the disembarking passengers and return later in the day? Will we be getting new card keys?

Does anyone have a good suggestion on what to do around Southampton? We have visited London a few times and will be spending 2 days there before the cruise starts so are not interested in visiting there. Will there be tour companies at the port that we can use or do we need to pre-book? :):)
