  1. I see you at approximately 36N, 69W.....

You should soon be sailing into smoother waters...it is pretty calm along the coast...

One good thing for those waiting to board in New York tomorrow....the ship and most of the cabins should be ready for early boarding, since the ship is mostly empty...

Oh, and unlike the unfortunate Anthem OTS, no norovirus worries....:)

Where are you able to track the ship, if I may ask? I don’t see it on any of the tracking websites.

  2. Nav channel shows us passing Cuba at 21.9 knots. Traveled 556 Nmiles with 1271 to go.

Gem still hasn't updated her satellite position...frustrating while trying to track her course. Thanks for all the updates, they've been good reading. Cheers!

  3. We can all learn to develop some expertise in the world of crusing, as it is unrealistic to expect NCL to provide verbatim update continuously - at ease of what might be happening, until and unless someone is onboard & do live status reporting (and, they often know less than we do)

Gem's ship captain definitely has hit the joystick pedals to the medals, hammer down in top gun mode. Doing a big counterclock-wise loop ... 22 knots, 22.2, 22.3, 22.7 knots, gone to 23 knots, 23.2 and 23.3 knots, now eased off slightly to about 22.6 knots.

Engines/azipods set to full speed ahead, all cylinders working in harmony ... NCL ships don't run at those top speed near the maximum rated mode that often - unless it's absolutely needed and/or in case of emergencies, like an evasive and/or rescue maneuver, etc. We're on the Gem back in 2012 when she gone past 24.7 or 24.8 knots with a favorable, strong gale force tail wind - propelling the ship to as much as 25 knots against a Nor-easter storm, while racing out of NY's harbor down the coast.

Calling on the Gem's "resident" onboard guardian Mermaid, behind the bridge viewing room to bless the ship for a full recovery and smooth sailing.

P.S. Latest graphics on Marinetraffic dot com - screenshot was just a short while ago, looked like she's done testing and heading into toward the pier/dock again @ 17 knots.

  4. This sounds increasingly positive! I'm on the 11/21 cruise. We are equally anxious about the Gems status. Good luck to us all!

  5. I'm considering a 10 night cruise on the NCL Gem out of Manhattan. I'd be driving up from MD. The cost of the cruise is < $700. The cost to park at the pier is $400, which is hefty when you have no one else to split it with. So, I'm looking for someplace in NJ to park, perhaps spend the night before, etc. I'd probably find an AirBnB, try to arrange a parking deal, and take the Path train and/or Uber/Lyft it to the port. Just wondering if others have found a thrifty way to get to the port in Manhattan.

    Bus, all day.

  6. Greetings from Barbados. The Gem is still here and under going repairs. As stated elsewhere, it appears the Gem has spent time away from the pier recently probably to test recent repairs.

Those that will be re-boarding the Gem for travel back to NYC, have a meeting schedule for this evening with a ship's representative. When folks left the ship a specific departure plan (date/time) was not provided to those waiting a local hotel, hopefully more info will be provided during the meeting.

THANKS so much! Any updates you can provide would be great! I hope those of you still in Barbados are making the best of a difficult situation.

  7. Captain just announced that the Gem will not be returning to NYC on the current cruise due to engine troubles. Passengers will disembark in Barbados and take a chartered flight back to New York.

Has anyone had this experience and specifically how they might deal with passengers that can't or don't fly?

Thanks for posting this. All of us on the Nov. 21st sailing are holding our breath with all this drama.
