It is tricky
You fly into IAH then have to get a ride/shuttle to Galveston about 1 hr away
We have family there so they took us to the port
I would fly in a day or more early get a hotel close to Galveston or close by
Always fly day before. It is new port for us

A few more points.
There are two airports.
IAH-Bush is the larger but it is on the north side of Houston, maybe 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to Galveston.
Hobby (HOB) is closer to galveston but it is smaller. Shuttles will be cheaper from Hobby.
We can't use hobby because the nearest airport that has flights to Hobby is an hour and a half drive from home.
If you can fly into Hobby, that will save you some cash.
Whether you stay near the airport or travel to galveston will probably depend upon when your flights arrive. As I said, it's maybe 90 minutes from IAH to Galveston.
Thank you,appreciated 😊

I don't think anyone mentioned the Holiday Inn San Diego - Bayside, which is just north of the airport, which is just north of the cruise pier. The Hilton Garden Inn splits a building with the Homewood Suites, which like better than the HGI and the SpringHill Suites splits a building with the Residence Inn, which I like better than the SHS.
La Pensione is small and charming and a great location in the heart of Little Italy.
Rite Aid has a nice selection of wine, Ralph's a better one, but if you are in SD for a couple of days or just want nice wine, go visit The Wine Bank in the Gaslamp, It is a little over a mile from the cruise terminal, but it has a phenomenal collection in their underground cellar. It's at 5th & J Street.
We are booked at holiday inn bayside
For our cruise

The Rite Aid is good for snacks, water and sodas. Yes the wine selection is good, Little Italy is an upscale residential area, but you can do even better at the Wine Bank, Albertson's and Vino Carta.
Thanks everyone , all booked

What cruise line? Every cruise line we've ever sailed offers bottled water for sale. Princess, and possibly some others, offers a very reasonable package (12 small bottles for about $9) that you can pre-order for delivery to your room. You can also take your own refillable bottle and drink the tap water - completely safe and pure, tastes fine especially if you chill it in the cabin frig.
I was looking on Royal but didn't see it

Best Western Bayside Inn is in Little Italy, so it has great food.
As to shopping, shopping for what?
snacks. water...or can you order water bottles on board
-
Best Western Bayside Inn (possibly walkable, a bit more than a 1/2 mile) and Best Western Island Palms.
Do they have good eating areas and last min shopping

Please could you give me a heads up on Best Western hotels

Do you belong to an auto club? In CA I belong to AAA and I get a very good discount on hotel rooms, pays for my membership in one nights stay. I would guess you could join a US based auto club (you don't have to insure your vehicles) get a member number and use that to make a reservation.
Being a GOV employee I use either my AAA, AARP or GOV rates to book hotels. Most times my AAA rate is the lesser of them all.
Also, the further out you stay from downtown the cheaper it is, for the most part. Look around Hazard Center or even Rancho Bernardo, all of which are a quick drive to the port.
I have CAA, which is similar, I will try that, thanks

thanks and keep posting...we love Cruise Critic
Being a Canadian..prices are way up there for our march sailing 2019, plus we have to add about 30 cents on the dollar..so makes it really expensive for one night...there must be just as good hotels near by, so my question is ...some people must pick other hotels less money, but still good, and everything seems to be close from airport to port...any sugguestions please

Thanks all

first of all I don't drive...
I want to know the possible ways to get from Sarasoda (or close by there) to Port Canaveral..
is there a train that runs..
are there buses...
thanks in advance..we are heading to my sisters in Feb (near Sarasoda, it is bradenton florida) and then want to take a cruise out of Port Canaveral...but want to know how to get there...

We too have decided to sit on the fence for a bit..if the dollar drops by 2017, being retired..we can do last minute...or close to it...
We leave in 25 days for our cruise but booked over a year ago..so money was good..good thing we did..or we would have cancelled..I cannot justify paying 1 and 1/2 times the price...then the americanas..not fair..
we will wait and see

I love Carnival..been on a few RCL..but i like them both for different reasons..
you say you want to people watch., well there are lots of people and very friendly i might add
you said you wanted to eat..there are lots of places to do that and the food is good.
you said you wanted to drink beer, well there is lots of that too..
A VACATION IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT...RELAX , ENJOY, AND STAY POSITIVE...you will have a wonderful holiday
-
wow..i heard on the news today that we could see the dollar going to 60 cents..
My first cruise in 2000 , i thin we were 64 cents...and I said never again...so I guess i will sit and wait it out ...
thanks everyone for your imput..appreciate it

We are going feb on carnival sunshine 13 day , booked a year ago when rate was good, bought enough american money to pay for it,so that is why we are going, but nothing booked ahead,
-
Question for all..
do you think with the low Canadian dollar you will see less and less Canadians on a cruise..Even thought Carnival has the lowest pricing, it is still way too much to be paying ...
I know I will have to sit and really think...do I want to spend the price and almost half again for the same cruise...I don't think so..I work hard enough for my money to give it away..
-
I sure wouldn't get too excited about this..been on many cruises and when they say this , I think every body that has never been on a cruise rushes there, so picture all these passengers trying to get into these sales to find out it is only T-shirts...
Same as the jewelry store..flocks of people trying to win something..you cannot even move...wow..
but it sure is a first time experience..
have fun on your cruise..
-
Well obviously nobody really answered your question. I am from Toronto area and also booked in US dollars. I have to pay next month the balance which is huge but again we are cruising and will not stop me. It would be nice for carnival to offer us Canadians dollar at par.... Hell I would book two more then.:):):):)
that would be amazing if they would...hopefully they will feel sorry for us someday..
I also have an american BM card, and if I use i , my fees are dropped, and I also have my medical on there...so all is good
-
please tell us about it..what is it..how does it work, and where do we go to sign up

We are flying into Miami for a Norwegian Cruise in January. It is better to take a taxi to the port or purchase their transfer package.
I like to taxi it..you get there faster and most times it is cheaper...do your homework, go onto the port of call site and people will tell you exactly how much a taxi is...
good luck..
