  1. I will be in Montreal post cruise during Canadian Thanksgiving .

In my province of Alberta, shopping malls still open on sundays and holiday mondays.

Do Montreal shops ( for clothing ) and malls be open then?

Naturally if you’re from Alberta changing currency isn’t necessary.

Thanksgiving isn’t a big deal in Montreal but I can’t say if all stores will be open. I imagine googling to see store hours would give you more info.

Crescent street is a hub for trendy restaurants and bars and some boutiques. It’s always a fun place to visit.

  2. I have heard that Montreal is the best place to shop for clothes.

One time several years ago, I was driven past a street , going west to east, where there were lots of fashion boutiques.

It was quite a few blocks away ( perhaps south and west of ) from Fairmont Queen Elizabeth and not the side near Old Montreal. Any suggestion where I am referring to?

Appreciate suggestions for fashion shopping away from the Fairmont area ( we have been there before )

    Thanks.

It sounds like St. Catherine which is the main downtown street.

Eaton Center is an indoor mall surrounded by other stores.

Made sure you exchange US funds to Canadian at a money exchange or bank , or use a credit card.

  3. It is about 30-40 mins depending on traffic

I would not book before NOON as you will have to clear US Immigration at YUL

Usually the ships come into the same port area but do check when the schedule for your sailing is available

There’s a lot of construction so give yourself more time.

You need at least two hours at airport before flight.

  4. I’m not a native Montrealer, but I did live there on two occasions for several years, and I now live a short drive away and visit often. That said, I am not a great fan of Schwartz’s and think there are better places for smoked meat, both of which have been already mentioned. In the Plateau,I prefer The Main across the street from Schwartz’s and downtown, Dunn’s on Ste. Catherine. There are other good places but for the casual visitor these two should please. (BTW my favourite was Ben’s, now sadly closed).

The OP and her husband have now visited and I would be interested in where they ended up eating. I do hope they tried a Montreal bagel as I think they are far superior to the New York variety.

I’m a native of Montreal and agree The Main is far superior to Schwartz. Another good place is Lester’s on Bernard.

  5. Thank you for remembering, Carol. Now that HAL doesn't have any real Piano Bars left I am a lot less interested in the piano entertainment at night.

The Prinsendam is as close as HAL comes to a piano bar, and that isn't set up for a proper one. The thrill is gone, as the lyric says.

Veendan and a few other ships still have the old style piano bar. Any HAL ship with “The Mix”.

  6. I surfed the Princess site today and noticed that just about every “good” cabin has been sold for the New York-Fort Lauderdale sailing November 1/18. I found a larger cabin (deluxe balcony) port side aft and booked it. The price seems quite a bit more for the same cruise in ‘17 so will keep on eye on the pricing and perks. Can always rebook getting the same cabin.

  7. Your best bet is to exchange a minimal amount in a bank before you arrive. You certainly won’t lose as the US dollar is between 25-30% higher in value.

  8. Very tempted to pull the trigger on this one:

Holland America 7-DAY EASTERN CARIBBEAN Wednesday Apr 11, 2018 on the ms Veendam

Interior came to CDN$1048.51 all in (port fees, trip insurance)

I've placed a courtesy hold on it. Just have to read up on ms Veendam having never cruised with HAL before.

If you’re young and like a lot of late evening entertainment I’d go on another line. The average age is quite old and the ship basically goes to sleep after the late show.
