We are set to sail on the Symphony this Sat. Family and friends are telling us to cancel because of the govt warning. However, if we cancel we're out $4000 in airfare. Now we're thinking go to Disney World/Universal instead? Although what's the difference in being around crowds there vs on a cruise ship where crew is disinfecting all the time? No one is taking temps at the Disney entrance right? Trying to keep a level head but when friends are telling us they're all cancelling their plans it makes us think. Haven't heard anything about Harmony or Liberty ships having trouble so that makes me feel better. I wish we didn't have to make a decision in 36 hours.

The difference is if something were to happen at a theme park, you can go home. On a cruise ship, you have a risk of being confined in your stateroom for an undetermined amount of time. Or the ship gets diverted because a port of call closed.

My worry is if this truly continues to spiral out of control and RC cancels cruises..... what keeps them from filing chapter 11 bankruptcy? So we lose our FCC

Trust me I WANT to be on that cruise....... my only worry is quarantine,.....

I'm with you 100%. I'm more worried about quarantines, changed/diverted routes, and closed ports more than the virus itself.

  3. *** Deep sigh***

My wife and I was just talking about this on our walk around the neighborhood park yesterday. We have a family cruise scheduled for end of June. Planned it since last summer. Got family flying in to go on this ship and everybody is excited. We talked about the risks involved.

Like somebody already stated, it is not about catching the virus itself... it is about the ship(s) being rerouted, diverted, and/or quarantined,  and ports around the world closing. There are now virus cases popping up in the Caribbean. We don't no if it will be over or still in play by the time we cruise.  Half of our family that are going on the cruise are already leaning towards cancelling.

What is ironic is that outside of our cruise, we have a destination wedding and a family reunion planned for this summer. Either of those may be in jeopardy also.

One good my wife pointed on. She said if everything gets cancelled, we'd have a heck of a lot of money saved up.

  4. Have a family group with 3 cabins going this summer on the Oasis. Been on the Anthem and loved it.

Yes, the itinerary is not the best, but you have to understand that this port is catered towards the northern region. There are 6 states with plenty of major cities within a 3.5 hour driving distance of the port. The cost savings for airfare have a lot of northerners thinking it is worth it.

It's because the Celebrity Summit will be repositioning to Boston after two TA cruises (one leaving from Cape Liberty on Sunday August 2nd) and not returning to Cape Liberty. Oasis will then switch over to a Sunday-Sunday schedule, as stated in post #2.

And there is the answer. We are only seeing the outside of this multi-billion dollar company managing the logistics of over 25 ships with 10's of thousands of passengers. There is usually a good business reason to what seems like madness to us.

  6. Has anyone had success with booking the BOGO' date=' and a dining package of 3 or more nights? Just curious since the website does say the BOGO is for the first and second nights; and the dining packages say something like the first reservation is made for the first or second night.[/quote']

Don't worry about trying to do it on the website. When you board the ship, go to a specialty restaurant to request the changes. I'm not 100% sure if you can forego the first night's dining, but we were successful in moving the second night to the third night.

  7. My wife and I just got back from Anthem of the Seas (Sept 1 - 6). We did the 3 night dining package (Wonderland, Jamie's, and Chops). When we go again in the future, we would definitely do the BOGO instead of the 3 night. It is a great deal and you can save a lot of money. Especially if it is only a 5 night cruise.

Also, we were able to move the 2nd specialty restaurant night to the third night instead of the second night. So we ate at a specialty restaurant on nights 1,3 and 5.

  8. Hey everyone,

On the Anthem of the Seas now. My wife and I brought on 2 bottles of wine and 2 six packs of mini soda cans. Went through check-in and they saw the cans, counted them and said we were good because we were under the limit

I wanted regular sized (12 oz) cans instead of minis but my wife was concerned they would be too big. Once on board I saw several people with 12 packs under their arms.

Just wanted to update everyone that is is allowed. At least for now and on AOS.

  9. I understand that you can meals for free at the buffets and restaurants but you are essentially paying fore the convenience and privacy of eating in your room and not having to deal with lines and crowds.

$7.95 is a steal for room service. Trust me, having paid $22 for pancakes and bacon for room service at a hotel one time while I was on a business trip, I wouldn't mind paying RC's reasonable service fee for eating breakfast while watching the sunrise on our balcony.

BTW, isn't there a coffee maker in each room?

  10. YES THIRSTDAY, it really happened (If I'm going to make something up it won't be about a support dog!) and I've been wracking my brain to remember which ship. I am often comped (fully or partially) by the Blue Chip or Casino Royal "Clubs" and so always introduce myself to the casino host/ess. I went to do this and the hostess was carrying around a small fluffy dog (papillon I THINK but I didn't ask). I mentioned "I didn't realize staff and crew could bring their dogs aboard" and she said it was a casino player's emotional support dog. I asked where the owner was and was told only that she was "playing". While the dog itself didn't bite, bark, yap or anything like that I was still very much bothered. I'm concerned that if can cast skepticism on others who have true service dogs... like gee I wonder why this person brought his/her dog.

Also true service dogs, while working, aren't supposed to be pet and fondled and carried around by strangers.

I'm just shocked at the audacity to ask a hostess member babysit a pet. I am all for not allowing emotional support animals on vacation vessels. And if needed on an airline, they should be properly contained. I thought I saw it all when I read a news report of a woman demanding to let her peacock fly with her on an airplane.

  11. I hope this is effective across all the RCCL brands. I'm sorry but the dippy dog in the baby stroller and the "support dog" being held by the casino hostess while the owner gambled... just ticks me off. Service dogs are working "heroes" and those that need them, NEED THEM.

PS: when I'm at the tables or a slot machine, feeding it $100 bills, I NEED a support animal but somehow I survive!

    Did this really happen???

  12. I have seen 30% off. But after researching it, it seems like it wouldn't matter. Royal Caribbean has what's known as the Royal Math. You can read about it here... https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2661165

Basically it is a percentage off the on-board price. But what they don't tell you is the exact on-board price. That is because this mystery price can fluctuate at any time. Meaning they can offer 20% off the on-board price, but they can bump the on-board price up to make up for the 20% difference.

The best way to do it from what I have learned is to calculate per drink+ per person+ per day consumption. The consensus is that 15 + drinks (which includes sodas and specialty drinks) a day will make the deluxe drink package worth it. I don't know about you but I don't even drink water 15 times a day. You also have to account for time you won't be on the ship aka dock days. If you will be on excursions most of the day, it will eat into the 15 drinks per day target.

But all in all it is your decision. Most people get the drink package for peace of mind.

  13. What time are you allowed to leave the ship? I think I read 7:30 am being the earliest.

New Jersian here who travels out of all 3 airports Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), and New York Kennedy (JFK). Unless you are driving at 2 am in the morning, there is ALWAYS traffic getting to JFK from New Jersey. Not to mention the constant construction on the roads and bridges you will be using. Your GPS will tell you 1 hour ETA but you have to account for anywhere between 15 - 60 minutes being added for traffic.

I think a 11 am flight would be cutting it close. However, there have been many times I have been late getting to the airport. I have arrived 30 minutes prior to gate closing and still made it ( a couple of times I was literally the last person to enter the plane). But I had TSA precheck, did online check-in, and did not have any bags to check. Those three things saved my tush a few times.

  14. I've looked at map and descriptions on Royal Caribbean's website and there isn't a lazy river

    Lazy river? What lazy river? I see no lazy river.[/quote}

It should be "No Stinking Lazy River.";p

Oh wow. My apologies. i can't believe I put a lazy river in there. Excuse me, I wrote it at work so it was kind rushed.

It looks like they have fixed all of the itineraries. There are no more 2 day stays at CocoCay for now. We will see if some pop up in the future.

  15. I spoke with a representative who couldn't answer all of my questions about CocoCay but was willing to speak to a supervisor about it. Here is what she told me.

*For sailings that will be docked at CocoCay for more than one day, you will be able to have access to the beach and the park both days. So even though the website has Cococay on day 1 and Perfect Day on day 2 of the itinerary, you can essentially use both days to go to the park or split the days half and half.

*Access to the park is at a cost which allows access to complimentary attractions like the freshwater pool, lazy river, and wave pool, etc but other attractions will cost extra. Basically, anything that is not on the price list that was posted is free.

*No info on future sailings that will have more than one day at CocoCay port. The rep searched herself and could only find Anthem of the Seas 7 day cruise from NJ that had 2 days at CocoCay. She did admit that it would be beneficial to have more options of ships and itineraries that offer multiple day stays there. She encouraged me and anyone else to reach out to RCI and suggest it.

There is still so much time before the park is opened so things can change, including pricing.

  17. I just posted in another thread about this. I was looking at the same cruise. Here is my post...

    https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2640390&highlight=perfect+day&page=1

My wife and I are very interested in this.

Does anyone know if RCL will offer multiple day itineraries? I found one that leaves NJ and is in Orlando the first stop then to CocoCay for 2 days but it only has Perfect Day at CocoCay on 1 of the days?

    https://secure.royalcaribbean.com/cr...cy=USD&wuc=USA

My wife and I have no problem with having one day at the park and another at the beach but the kids may want to spend both days at the park. Going by the price list that was posted we could even do 2 half days at the park and spend the second half of the day at CocoCay beach.

All of the other itineraries I see have 1 day at CocoCay and the next at Nassau. Nothing wrong with that but if this new park is geared towards kids it will be a buzz kill for them.

I also see cruises coming out of Miami, which is only a short trip, still only having 1 day at Cococay.

I plan to make a call and see what a rep says but I have a feeling that they may not know anything about it.

  19. We just returned on Anthem of the Seas .. I brought my Samsung TV Remote from home and it worked!

It gave access to "Source", the same video input options as home tv including hdmi, screen mirroring (wireless picture and video projection from my Samsung Galaxy phone) plus got to use USB jump drive for the tvs built in music player on TV ( speakers were tinny, but nicer background music that we chose) The USB drive had options for Usb video playback too, but I didn't test that option. I think this would be great for parents with small children who like specific programs or if you want to bring a movie or two. If you can do it on your home Samsung.. you can likely do it on Anthem. Peel remote should work as well as long as it gives you a button for input or source. If tv freezes there is a power button on middle of back panel (tv swings away on hinge for in room viewing, just pull firmly onside of TV AWAY from sofa) turn power off and back on and it reboots tv to normal original tv app Hope it helps

We just did this for my sons Switch a few weeks ago on the Anthem. Very simple to do you just plug in the HDMI cable into one of the inputs and then turn the TV on with the Samsung universal remote. Choose the proper input and you should be good to go. The trick to making this work is the Samsung universal remote. They are pre programmed for Samsung TV's so no need to deal with codes.

    Thank you for this information.

Was thinking about bringing my tablet/pc with a few movies and shows on it for evenings when we are in the cabin. DW and I usually lay in bed at night and have these shows to partly entertain and partly put us to sleep.

  20. Maybe time to change venues???

I agree with others that 5 Guys is a viable option. I haven't eaten in a JR in years. the last time was when I was a business trip about 5 years ago and I could expense it. Even then I felt it wasn't worth it.

I don't eat fast food burgers. But there are many "above-fast-food-quality" burger places I would think would do better than JR. Red Robin, Fuddruckers, Steak n' Shake, Shake Shack, and Five Guys are examples. My local favorite is 25 Burgers.
