  1. I am using an iPad. The last time I used cruise critic, last summer, I did fine. There seems to be a lot of changes since then and I can’t navigate the site. In particular, within the Holland American section I don’t know how to search now. I would search this section (board?) but, again I don’t know how to search.

I am 70 and can’t catch on like I used to. Is there a guide to how to work the site? Please tell me how to search just the section I’m on!

thanks so much for your help.

  2. We’re booked on 14 day Alaska cruise and I noticed that quite a few shore excursions in Anchorage are labeled ‘intransit’. The cruise does not start or end at this port so I wonder if a more experienced cruiser can tell me what this means. I found nothing online.

The 14 day round trip out of Seattle? You can take those excursions. If your cruise started or ended in the city (say Anchorage) you couldn’t. Make sense?

  3. May 29 Tuesday-Mostly cloudy, windy and in the 40s today. We are in Homer and will be doing the Best Of The Bay boat tour. Homer is on the shore of Kachemak Bay on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula. Its distinguishing feature is the Homer Spit, a narrow 4.5 mi long gravel bar that extends into the bay, on which is located the Homer Harbor. Much of the coastline as well as the Homer Spit sank dramatically during the Good Friday earthquake in March 1964.

The tide level in Homer is on Cooks Inlet, so once again, we will get off the ship either on deck 3 or 2, depending on the depth at that time. There is a free shuttle to take us to the other side of the Spit, where all of the shopping is, but to actually go into Homer costs $15.

The Best Of The Bay tour is rated more difficult because it is a pretty long walk to the boat and a fairly steep ramp to get to the dock. What we saw was lots of sea otters and puffins close up We also saw several Eagles and even mountain goats. There were also birds that looked a lot like penguins, but were able to fly. Very nice tour. The weather made a turn for the worse as we got back, so the afternoon tour probably won’t have it so comfortable.

We did try the musical this evening. It was titled Roadhouse, so we were hoping it would be music from the movie. It wasn’t. We weren’t the only ones that walked out early.

Thanks for all your great information. We’ll be doing this 14 day in 2 weeks! Yeah! We usually do fixed time in the MDR to plan out a complicated med schedule. What time is early seating? Is it the same on Sea days and port days? Thanks for your help.

  4. To clarify, If we cancel before we get on the ship, no fee. If we cancel once we get onboard even 13 days before the excursion, 10% fee. Some of the excursions are pretty pricey. For three of us at $350 each, $100 fee? Just sayin ..... the one private vendor we are using has no fee if cancelled by 48 hours before. I’ll quit whining now and get back to getting excited planning for our cruise!

  5. We finally decided on (and booked) excursions for our June, 14 day Alaska. In the fine print it seems to say there is a 10% charge for ALL tours cancelled onboard. I don’t remember this from previous cruises.

    • Am I reading this correctly? Can it really be I can be out $100-200 if one of our disabled cruisers is having a bad spell?
    • Is this new or have I paid it before and not noticed? We have cancelled 48 hours before.

Thanks for your help. We are so excited about going on our cruise!:D

  6. We are planning on purchasing a Juneau helicopter/glacier tour for our adult son. We will all be on the 14 day HAL cruise in June. We want to do this as a ship’s shore excursion. Looking at the choices it is hard to tell the difference (except the price). He is unable to do a difficult or lengthy walk. He’s never seen a glacier or been in a helicopter. Any help with information or suggestions for this once in a lifetime experience will be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

  7. Please help settle a family disagreement. Is the entrance to a cabin completely flat or is there a bump or ledge?

I want to book a regular suite (not accessible) because of available choices. We are disagreeing on whether I’ll be able to get my wheelchair in by myself (already checked the width and it’s ok). The ship is the Zaandam if that helps.

    Flat carpeting or bump?

    Thanks for your help!

  8. Our group of three (two disabled) have a 7 day cruise to Alaska planned. Because all are doing fairly well right now we are hoping to change to a land/sea, but are on a very tight budget.

We are trying to find the least expensive way to see Denali, perhaps the land package with the one day in Denali. Has anyone done this vacation? Is it possible to see any of the park on this tour? We were told there isn’t time for a bus trip into the park.

We are available to travel June through August. I know that obviously a 2 or 3 day Denali tour would be better but out of our price range.

Thanks so much for your help.
