We did the Castles along the Rhine last year with Uniworld and had a great time!  We stayed at the Hotel Spalentor, a quick walk to historic Basel, and were very pleased with it.  It was reasonably priced with good sized contemporary rooms.  We got the recommendation from several posters on this board.  I want to say this was a 15 - 20 minute taxi to where the S.S. Antoinette was docked.

If you really want to splurge, Le Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, is spectacular, and right on the Rhine.

Hi, were you on SS Antionette? I've heard mostly wonderful things, a few naysayers on the boards but mostly good. We are in a suite so I'm extra excited.

  2. Hi guys! We're doing Castles along the Rhine, too, April 21! Coming up fast! I have friends who now live in Basel, (they are from Orlando, where we're traveling from) and they recommended the Novatel, which is where we've booked. It looks gorgeous, it's near the Rhine and about 15 minutes from the airport. I'll let you know how it is, we're doing the reverse trip as you, starting in Amsterdam and ending in Basel. We're staying at the Doubletree by Hilton in Amsterdam which is a 5minute walk from the train station and a 10 minute walk to the river cruise! I've booked a Craft Beer + Storytelling tour in Amsterdam the day before we leave on the SS Antionette. Let me know if you'd like that info. We're all going to have an amazing time, I'm sure!

Have a great time! The afternoon hors d'oeuvres are such a treat. And, daily laundry, if needed. Do you know your cabin #? You may be able to google and see what it looks like. There are pics of some of the suites on Uniworld's website.

Hi Robin! Thank you! We're so stoked! Regarding the suite, I've spent literally weeks googling and researching our suite (402). I came across one review here on CC of Suite 402, great review, they loved their suite but no pics. Uniworld actually sent me a photo of the suite, but I don't trust it, lol. There's literally no where else that particular photo is found except on their website. I guess it doesn't matter! I'm excited anyway! I'm sure it'll be spectacular. We've booked the optional vinegar cooking class with Chef Matthias in Germany after the vinegar estate tour. I'm looking forward to those hors d'oeuvres!

  4. We're headed to Amsterdam April 19 for Uniworld's Castles along the Rhine. We upgraded to a suite with a butler. Oh my! This is our first river cruise and my boyfriend's first trip to Europe. Beyond excited! I'm dying to know what our suite looks like!

  5. We've done two cruises with Uniworld and have a third booked for 2018. For the most part, we skip the optional excursions since the ones that are included are wonderful and pretty much cover everything we'd want to see. The only exception for us was Heidelberg on our Rhine itinerary, but the cost was pretty minimal considering the distance traveled, etc. (That was the only charge on our final bill for that cruise; our last cruise had a final tally of $0; I expect the same for the next one.)

Hi there, we're doing Uniworld's Castles on the Rhine next April. Can you tell me about your experience on that particular river cruise? This is our first river cruise, we're pretty excited.
