  1. Assuming all (5) of you are capable to do self-disembarkation, you should be out of the cruise terminal building on or before 8:30am. There are a lot of taxis, call an Uber or Lyft, or one of the many cruise-to-airport transpo companies. There is also a bus going to MIA (this is what we took when we cruised with Seaside in 2018). We were at MIA just after 9AM. Our flight to YYZ was at noon. We had a lot of spare time at MIA.

  2. Our Eastern Mediterranean started and ended in Venice last month (October). Our ship was delayed docking because of fog. ETA was 9 AM, then adjusted to 10 AM, and finally docked at 3:45 PM!. We have booked our flight out of Marco Polo Airport (VCE) the following day so we weren't stressed-out missing our flight but we were disappointed on missing out our time exploring places in Venice we haven't been to.

Depending on your last port before Venice (end of cruise), you could have disembarked at that port and take a train to (Mestre) Venice then a bus to VCE. I think that would be a less expensive option vs the one you took. I've read somewhere here in CC where the passengers disembarked on the last day (in this case Dubrovnik, Croatia) having been told of possible delayed disembarkation in Venice which will make them miss their flight back to the U.S.

I don't know how busy the traffic is from Venice to VCE. We stayed in a hotel in Mestre (north). Our shuttle took a freeway and we were at VCE in less than 15 minutes. Yes, VCE is crowded and most direct flights to North America are leaving between 11 AM - 2 PM. Check-in line-ups are long. They normally have a separate line-up for North American passengers at the immigration booth.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  3. You don't have to eat at the MDR every night. But should you opt to eat at the MDR every night, yes, you will be at the same table, with the same dinner mates (if you are grouped with other passengers), and the same waiter crew for the duration of your cruise. You don't have to tip your waiter crew. A daily service charge is tag to each passenger in your cabin (I think €10/day/passenger).

    Other evening eating options;

    Free - Buffet

    Paid - Specialty restaurants

  4. Question #2 : Disembarkation

In our cruise that disembarked in Venice, watch out for your ETA. We were originally scheduled for 9:00 AM arrival but got moved to 10:00 AM. But because of thick fog, we got delayed and arrived at 3:45 PM. Bottom line, there could be a possibility of delayed disembarkation. Like you, our flight out of Venice was a day later. That saved us a lot of stress. Our only disappointment was that our time in Venice was shortened.

They use colored tags. There was no self-disembarkation in our cruise. Instead, we requested a tag for those who have made separate arrangement/booking after the cruise (not excursion). We were on the 6th group that were allowed to disembark. We disembarked after about 40 minutes from the 1st group. The next group were those on Deck 5 (and so on...). If you are on the higher Decks, your disembarkation will be later.

I've noticed that the rush of passengers getting off the ship happens within the early group vs the later group.

    Question: MDR attire

Your preference of khaki and button down shirt will be just fine. They have a formal night. You might want to dress up for the camera but otherwise, it is not necessary.

I hope you enjoy your cruise as much as we did ours.

  5. Our cruise with MSC Musica ended in Venice on Saturday. We docked late because of the fog and used ISONZO 1 terminal. Depending on how heavy your bags are, it is a good 15-20 minute walk to the People Mover station from where we docked. Across the People Mover station in Piazzale Roma (to the far left), you can take the vaporetto to San Marco (take #2, it is faster vs #1). There are water taxis near 103 terminal.

  6. There are several modes of transportation from Venice to (VCE) Marco Polo International Airport.

    1. Vaporetto Taxi (most expensive)
    2. Taxi/Cab (expensive)
    3. Airport Transfer from MSC (booked like an excursion)
    4. Get to Piazza le Rome and catch the AVTO bus to VCE. (least expensive)

We completed our cruise with MSC on Saturday (Oct 12). We were scheduled to dock in Venice at 9 am but were told the evening before that we will be delayed by 1 hour (ETA 10 am). We arrived near the mouth of the channel to Venice around 8:30 am but because of fog, the PA announcement said we were looking at ETA of 12 noon. Passengers started to call their travel agent or airline CS line and started rebooking their outbound flights. We were fortunate that our flight our of Venice will be the following day. We hoped to disembark sooner so that we will have more time to see Venice.

Long story short, we docked at 3:45 pm. Our group line started moving around 5:00 pm. We were walking outside of the cruise terminal to the People Mover at 5:30 pm. We were disappointed we only had a few hours to go around Venice before we headed to our hotel in Mestre. We were just glad we didn't have to be stressed rebooking our flight back home.

To answer your question, if you disembark in Venice at 7:30 am, you will have enough time to catch your 12:30 pm flight at VCE. However, because of weather conditions, your actual disembarkation time might be later which might cause you to miss your flight.

  7. The good value MSC gave during our first cruise (with MSC Divina) in 2015 is what made us love cruising. We have cruised with MSC Preziosa and MSC Seaside over the past two years. We will be boarding MSC Musica soon. We've cruised Carnival early this year which was a good value for a short cruise (3 nights-4 days). We felt that the amount we paid with our cruise with MSC was good value and our expectations were met.

The extra cost are pretty much the extras ... drink package, internet package,  photo package, excursions, specialty restaurants, etc.

I was mostly interested in Civitavecchia; we will not be taking a ship's excursion and would like to go into the town and walk around. We were there once with Celebrity and I remember having to take a bus to the port entrance; just wondering if there will be a charge with MSC.

Our other ports are Valencia, Cagliari, Palma (thanks for the info), Genoa and Palermo (embarking in Marseille).

We disembarked in Civitavecchia in 2015. There is a free shuttle from ship to port gate. If you are planning to go to Rome, there is a city bus to the train station. I don't remember how much was the fare (€2, maybe). If you don't have big bags, you can walk to the train station.

I'd be interested how you arranged transportation to the Steinwerder port.  Did you arrive in Hamburg by air or train and did you use a MSC transfer to the port or arrange your own?

We took Preziosa in Fall 2017. We took the train to Veddel Station. Then took a shuttle bus (purchased tickets from www.hansetix.de/cruisegate). At the time we planned our trip, we didn't know that MSC has a bus transfer from Hamburg Central Station to the cruise terminal. I don't know how much it cost. I think this bus transfer is the best option to get to the cruise terminal.

After our cruise, we use this bus transfer from the cruise terminal to the train station. The line up was long but there are several buses. We were at the train station around 10am. I cannot remember if the shuttle was free. When we got to the train station, we stopped in front of the MSC 'booth' on the east side of Central Station.

  10. I think it is doable assuming all things align as commented above.

During our cruise in May 2018, we arrived in Miami before 6am. We were lining up for self-disembarkation at round 7am. The line up slowly moved but were outside of the terminal by 7:30am. We went to booth outside the terminal doors to purchase our shuttle bus ticket. The bus driver said it will be leaving soon after we boarded the bus around 7:35am. The bus waited almost 30 minutes before we left for MIA. There was also another bus going to FLL.

We arrived at MIA before 8:30am. The American Airlines passengers got off the bus first. Then the rest of the bus passengers got off in the next terminal stop. We got to our airport check-in counter around 9am to drop our check-in bags. Our flight was 12:30pm.

So, every has to align to make it work. But then again, why subject yourself to such stress if you can get a later flight.

    Enjoy your trip.

  11. We went to two of them - they offered wonder woman, spiderman homecoming, and another I cant recall. They put out about 30 lounge chairs right in front of the screen. The chairs go from a full seated position to laying all the way back. No I between but the chairs were very nice. I didnt find it overly crowded but one night people were sitting on the steps behind because all of the seats were taken. The movies were a nice touch and the kids enjoyed

During our cruise in May, there were a couple of days that the movie was cancelled because of weather (rain). On the night we watched, the crew setup (2 rows of maybe 15/row) lounge chairs in front of the screen. If you need a quick bathroom/washroom break, there is a bathroom near the elevators at the aft of the ship. If you need food, the buffet at Deck 16 is less than 50 yards away. Not a lot of passengers (20 or so) were there that night although there were other passengers in Deck 16.

  12. Used the Jungle Pool a lot during our cruise last May. I was using goggles when swimming so it didn't bothered my eyes but I noticed my black underpants faded (compared to the ones I didn't use in the pool) a bit after not rinsing them thoroughly. This makes me think that there might be some kind of chemical (bleaching agent perhaps) used to produce the salt water.

  13. I don't think that (list) is published. The souvenir gift shop have items from $3 & up. On our last cruise in May, my wife bought 3 items (2 canvas bags and I forgot what the 3rd item was) for $20.

Brand apparels like Lacoste tshirts were $40 & up. They would normally have a sale (of fragrances, watches, etc.) during your sailing which my wife said the prices are reasonable (compared to duty free prices).

BTW, you get points and discounts, too if you are a Voyager member.

  14. Unlike the Caribbean cruises, MSC embarks and disembarks cruise passengers from most ports of call (if not all). As mentioned, secondary ports will have briefing vs full muster drill from major ports. You will hear muster drill announcements (in at least 5 languages) every afternoon. Obviously, only those who have embarked for the day will need to go to the muster drill. If you got off the ship (for excursion or DIY excursion), the muster drill will be completed by the time you came back. Don't be alarmed if you see some pax wearing their life jackets when you come back into the ship.

  15. I have vacillated on the idea, and I am now thinking I will fly into FLL the evening before. I have asked for a quote from QLS, and I am thinking I will use their service to get to the Regency Hotel near MIA. That hotel offers shuttle service to the port for a nominal fee, and I think I will be in better shape to hit the ground running on the cruise.

    Thank you for the input!!

We stayed in Regency Hotel near MIA in May when we cruised with MSC Seaside. We left the hotel around 11am (maybe because there were other hotel patrons that planned to used the shuttle but didn't inform the front desk). We used a bigger shuttle bus instead of the smaller van. Cruisers were dropped-off at the Carnival terminal first before MSC. We were at the Terminal F around 11:30am. We were in the Pre-Boarding area of the terminal around 12 noon. Non-YC cruisers started boarding around 12:15pm. We were in the ship around 12:30pm and we hit the buffet in Deck 8 immediately.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  16. When we had our cruise in May, we did Self-Disembarkation because we don't want to miss our flight back home. Seaside was docked before around 6am. We were lined up with the Self-Disembarkation group in Deck 6 around 7am. We were outside of the terminal aroun 7:25am.

The schedule is by cabin deck, so if your are in the 'cheap seats' in the higher deck, your schedule to disembark is later (between 10:00am-10:30am).

I think 10:30am is the last group to get off the ship. If you are not in a rush, 10:45-11:00am will be the window you can get a shuttle from the terminal to your car rental office.

  17. Went with Seaside in May to Western Caribbean.

    1. Answered already above.

    2. Yes, floaties or pool noodles are allowed. You have to bring your own.

    3. There is a dispenser beside the sink. If nothing comes out on your 1st day, tell your cabin steward to fill it up. If you are fond of bar soap, bring your own.

    4. N/A

    5. Yes. During our cruise, Deck 16 crew setup lounge chairs (about 2 rows of 20 chairs/row) infront of the amphitheater seating. The movie starts at 8pm (weather permitting). Grab something from the buffet in Deck 16 before finding a seat infront of the screen.

    6. Didn't try going to the beach in Nassau but there is a beach close to the port (to the west - behind the Hilton).

    7. The South Beach Pool in Deck 7 (aft) is adults only but not a Solarium Pool. And also, it is over 6' deep.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  18. We had a Western Med cruise in 2015. We disembarked in Civitavecchia but there were other cruisers (who embarked in Naples, Barcelona, Palma, Cannes, and La Spezia) who took the train to Rome with us (not paid excursion from MSC). The regional train has a stop near the Vatican. The train ride to Rome was less than an hour. This is less expensive option than the excursion from MSC.

  19. I saw on another post that you'd used MSC several times. This will be our first with them (Seaside, Western Caribbean) in anticipation of maybe booking them for a bigger Northern Europe if we like them.

My question is, have you done any of their Northern Europe ones and how do you think they compare to the Western Caribbean one?

Like you, we're flexible and know that it's on us to make it work too. So a little foreknowledge will help me to compare.

We have done Northern Europe last September (Hamburg, Le Havre, Southampton, Zeebrugges, Amsterdam) on MSC Preziosa. We had Bella booking but were assigned a Fantasia balcony cabin. My only regret was the weather. It was cooler when we were there and it was raining in a couple of ports. And also, we were rerouted to Rotterdam (instead of Amsterdam) because of fog. However, we still went to Amsterdam (from Rotterdam) via train.

If you haven't been to London or Paris or Berlin, this itinerary will make it possible to let you see those cities. A lot of planning ahead (train tickets, etc.) is required. If you are a Titanic fan, the Titanic Museum in Southampton is a must-see. There is also a big shopping mall and IKEA near the port.

  20. Have not cruised yet. But according to my research you have to prepurchase (for free) before you board.

We cruised with MSC Preziosa last year (Northern Europe itinerary). Bottled water is included (free) in our booking but never added in our shopping cart (in MSC's website). During our cruise, I told our waiter that bottle water is free but he said it was not added in our booking. So, make sure you add it in your shopping cart and also verify that you have it when you get your complete documentation after you check-in.

  21. We cruised in May. Here are my comment to your questions;

    - I don't know if they provide a map of the ship. However, MSC For Me app for iPhone and Android works well in the ship. It doesn't require your to have a WiFi package but you must turn on your WiFi to connect to the MSC access point. And also, the ship is filled with touchscreen monitors where it can show you the map of the ship.

    - Pizza is in the buffet restuarant - free (Deck 8 and Deck 16). I don't remember Pizza in the MDR menu but maybe you can order it, ask your waiter. Otherwise, just go to the buffet after your MDR meal.

    - There is a salad bar section in the buffet.

    - Drink package, we didn't have one so I cannot comment on it.

    - Wines, we ordered a (Californian) red wine bottle on our 1st night at the MDR. Pretty decent I would say (although, I won't consider myself a sophisticated wine drinker). We finished it on our 2nd night.

    - We had the 5:30 pm (1st seating) dinner time. We always reserved the 8:00 pm evening show. On our last night, we informed our waiter that we reserved the 6:45pm evening show because we wanted to watch the movie in Deck 16 at 8:00 pm. He was able to serve use our dinner (sans dessert) and had enough time to walk to the theater and catch the 6:45 pm show. The show in the theater is about 45 minutes (or less). There are normally 3 shows (6:45pm, 8:00pm, 9:15pm). Reserve your all your theater shows on day 1 of your cruise.

    - Duvet, didn't apply to us.

    - Everyday, the menu at the MDR is different. However, there is a Classic Menu that you can order from if the menu for day doesn't appeal to you. Classic Menu includes steak and salmon. We noticed that the portions/servings are bigger compared to our previous cruise with MSC (in Europe). If you like a 2nd serving, don't be shy to ask.

    - Gym, very nice. We used it everyday (before lunch).

    - Extra tip, if your cabin is near the aft, there is an elevator there that is seldom used. It services Deck 7 to Deck 16. If you are in a hurry to get to the buffet in Deck 8, use this elevator.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  22. Bella experience is a great value for a budget concious cruiser.

Our first cruise with MSC was Fantasia (interior cabin). We weren't sure what the difference with Bella. So, we booked Bella for the past 2 cruises with MSC and was assigned Fantasia Balcony cabins. Service was the same except the free room service (which we never avail of). Cabin steward would know your experience but their service is great.

Restricted areas (for YC pax) are not obvious unless you really venture out to those sections. Majority of the spaces (bar/lounges, etc.) in the ship are open to all pax.
