Question about hair straighteners: I saw a Cruise Compass on someone's blog that said hair straighteners are a prohibited item. Really?! Please tell me this is some sort of special appliance, and not just a regular, small flat iron. I use a flat iron on my naturally wavy hair every day!

Don't be distracted by the recent story in the news. That woman was detained because she arrived without a visa and filmed an immigration officer, not because she drank some wine on the plane.

Hotel bars and higher-end restaurants in Dubai sell alcohol by the drink. You can't buy alcohol in stores; it is only sold at the duty free at the airport. The rule of thumb is to behave the same way you'd behave at home: don't get absolutely bombed or pass out in public, and you will be fine.

Liquor stores are pretty much nonexistent in Dubai outside of the Duty Free in the airport. Either bring duty-free liquor with you from home or buy it there once you arrive. You won't be able to buy it once you leave the airport except by the drink in hotel bars and higher-end restaurants.

We are spending 7 days in Dubai at Christmas time. How easy is it to buy vodka and beer? Do they sell it in supermarkets like here, or do you have to go to a special store like a US liquor store?...or do we just bring duty free with us, as I see the allowance to enter UAE is 4litres of spirit or 48 cans of beer?
