  1. rccl is by far the best for full time w/c users. They have the most w/c rooms and a great ramp system. I have sailed on all of their ships. The biggest obstacle is the grab bar behind the shower seat. They have begun removing them but I just got off the Freedom last week and the Liberty 4 months ago and the are still on them. The Oasis class does not have them. The problem with the bars is that they prevent fou from sitting back all the way and it becomes a balance problem. Princess is great but their ramps are terrible they have 2 inch steps and 2 regular steps at the bottom. They have to carry the wheeler in their 250 lb. chair. After 11 cruises we stopped because of this. We called Princess and faxed pictures of RCCL'S ramps and they still hven't changed them. We check everytime we see one in port Including last week. We sailed on the newest Holland America and found that the acessible rooms were noy easy to navigate a w/c in. On the plus side they are the only one that has a w/c lift for their tenders. Hope this helps . 52 cruises later I stll find that cruising is the best way to travel in a w/c and a certified accessible t/a is the best way to to book your excursions because they no more than the cruise lines as far as that goes.

  2. I just got off the Allure last Sunday. We brought 3 people in scooters, I'm in a power chair. 2 in manual chairs and 2 that require a cane. The manual chair users had to be pushed, I had no problem getting around in my power chair and I don't transfer. The scooters worked well but they took up more space in the dining room. My reccomendation is to bring or rent a power chair. They are easier to manuever and take up less space. I know you can rent them from special needs at sea.250 lb. weight limit. If you can transfer then a scooter will be fine. The ship is too big and too much carpeting to use a manual chair. I'm a diamond plus and the Oasis and Allure have out done themselves. The beds are very high however and very soft. Comfortable but hard to get into. I'm 6'2 and 250 with no use of my legs and one good arm. I still had a great time. Enjoy your cruise.

  3. Are you sure that the're not spillable gel cells. They are aircraft approved. They usually take the lead acid batteries out and put them in a special container. They don't put them back in. That's up to you. If your not flying then you will be in your chair when you get on the ship. I've been on a lot of cruiss and have never been asked. I am on my 4th chair and have never had anything other than gal cells. Check your batteries. You might be surprised. If not I would go out and buy gel cells. I fly 3 or 4 times a year and they don't even make you disconnect your batteries anymoreEnjoy your cruise.

  4. You won't find rollator in a department store. They are available in some big drug stores. Your best bet is to a store that specializes in mobility aids like wheel chairs ,canes, cruches ect. You should be fitted to the Rollator just like a wheel chair. Keep walking as long as you can. I keep saying that if I could walk 3 steps my whole life would be different. Good luck.

I am going on my 35th cruise next week and my 36th will be on the Oasis Mar.13th. 3 on NCL 1 on Carnival, 10 on Princess 1 on HAL and the rest on RCCL. RCCL is by far the most w/c friendly.

  5. My wheelchair takes up extra space but my wife takes the stairs.I would gladly take the stairs if I could.n There is never a line tyo get on the stairs. My wife tells me they are very nice. They have a lot of brass and hardwoods and nice carpet. She told me they are always clean and inviting. It is one stressor that you have control of. Try them you may like it.

  6. I find that the elevators are full at dinner time. We try and book a room on the same deck. That eliminates the problem. If thats not possible we get there a few minutes late and the crowd is gone. I have found the best way to ruin a vacation is to sress out over something that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Most people are actually very considerate when given a chance. On a ship or in a shopping center people are basically kind. Make sure and thank them.icon7.gif
