I have been left in shock with the amount of helpful and honest commentary you put into your review (excellent writing BTW). Reminded me of the academic papers I read/wrote during graduate school. My name is Armando, and my wife and I, along with her brother, are doing this same trip cruise (Amsterdam to Basel) on the December 27th, 2014 departure. We also had many doubts about River cruising, but after reading your review, they have have been totally put to rest. I would love to see some of your photos if possible. I am a historian and also like to research my trips well in advance. I read that you are visiting Paris this year. My wife and I just got back from Paris. Because of the academic school calendar, and my wife's CPA schedule of Summer reporting/auditing, we are forced to vacation during the last two weeks of the year. Which works out fine because we love to celebrate New Year's Eve in a different country. This year it was Paris, and the year before that it was Venice, Florence, and Rome for the 31st. If you want to exchange emails or connect on Facebook, I would be glad answer any questions you may have.

However, my wife has a question, your review kind of answered it. Can you tell me how late can a person stay in the towns at night? The reason I ask is because we love to eat at local restaurants and taste the local foods for dinner. Also, you mentioned that busses would transport you to larger cities once you disembarked the ship, does that mean that restaurant choices where the ship docks are not feasible or limited?
