I have always paid the bills, made the budgets and played travel agent.  I assumed this role because my husband traveled a lot on business....most of the time out of the country...plus I am the frugal one. My husband told me when I booked our first cruise in 1998 not to tell him the cost as it would spoil his vacation if he knew the cost. We started in balcony rooms and now enjoy suites. I rarely tell him the cost. I have tried to cut corners over the years but find he is very unhappy with anything less than a Haven aft suite on the Breakaway. I told him the cost after our last cruise in the Haven last month on the Breakaway. He also knows the cost of our aft Haven suite for the Encore in 2020.  He has no problem with either.  I always look for the lowest prices with the most goodies. I have a budget and if everything is over my budget we don’t cruise.  We took early retirement years ago to enjoy life so my theory is if we don’t cruise in the cabins we love our kids will spend the money on something they love.

Exactly correct!  I try to keep my money in an interest account as long as possible and do not really use credit cards, except with a larger bill.  Then use promotion if available (rarely)  with no interest to keep interest on MY money until the last second.  Every couple faces finances differently.  I also get a huge savings with Total Rewards.  Each family has their own guidelines and budget needs (and available resources for discounts).  To each his own.  Judgement of others shows flaws in character so I just dismiss and wish the best for everyone.  Enjoy your cruise and live life to your fullest possible without hurting others or yourself on the journey.  Great post!

Please keep me in your thoughts when you divorce. 😁

That was nasty.  When the woman makes a VERY good salary with multiple positions and surprises her husband with a gift, that is her prerogative.  Best wishes and prayers and thoughts to you and your family.  I wish you a life of happiness.  Have a nice cruise.

  3. Put it on a card with time to pay offer.  This gave me a little wiggle room for pay in full.  Not a great financial move, but college tuition makes it tough to ensure larger payments. I like to put money in bank until due date.  My card 0  percent interest until November.  This way I pay in chunks rather than in full.  I just happen to have a promotion.  I wouldn't suggest getting a new card lol.

Yeah we saw a few out of Brooklyn, for us Brooklyn is more expense we usually take mega bus to penn station and walk to the nyc pier, Brooklyn will cost us more for transport from Penn station but something to keep our eye on. thanks for the info

ps  what is the DOS?  thanks

Deluxe owners suite   Went down over a grand from what i paid.  Keep watching.  Also I would go with lesser category with a poor upgrade bid.

Keep an eye out for a price drop   They gave us quite a bit to upgrade.

If you are in a DOS and looking for upgrade it must be for a Garden Villa?

If just two of you, yes, a GV would be nice but lots of extra space.  We were on Gem in DOS and could have gone into GV before bid system but upgrade too much for just two of us without kids that trip.  We saved the money.  The DOS on Jewel class ships is very nice and ronantic.  The ones on Dawn class are also nice enough especially if you go with the outer ones.

Did the upgrade.  Went for broke.  DOS open and dropped price from I had.  Up for grabs of upgrade advantage. Good luck!

Hello when is the cruise, if empty it may be cheap, might be something for us to look at, thanks.  We travel alot but on the frugal.

Grab the DOS, I  just upgraded to GV.  They dropped price on it from what I paid.  Good luck. Rest of ship empty also.  April 18 Jade 10 day out of Brooklyn.

  8. It is crazy.   I am in the DOS Haven and tried to upgrade for our 25th anniversary to the Villa, but came up just shy of less than $800 short of the $5000 more they wanted for the next category room. A frequent cruiser, and I opted out of the ultimate beverage package so I saved them money, (they wouldn't allow soda package instead, but I don't drink) but wouldn't give me the time of day to try to help with the upgrade.  The ship is pretty much empty so go figure.  I think I am canceling my bid for an upgrade and saving my money for a different cruise line some day.  The UBP cost more than what I missing for the upgrade.  They said then you should take the UBP.  Another smooth move to make me pay gratuities on something I won't use. Disheartened.
