  1. After reading the 13 March travel advisory, I would prefer these notices state who can board instead of listing out all those exclusions.

Who is still left out there allowed to board a ship departing out of one of the affected countries?

Currently am booked on the 14 May Pursuit Lisbon to Southampton.   Flying in from Tampa connecting thru Amsterdam staying 2 nights in Lisbon prior to sailing.   I am traveling to Portugal, an exclusion country in mainland Europe;  thus, I would be denied boarding assuming this advisory continues beyond the next 30 days to cover 14 May departures.   Also, I would come into contact with quite a lot of people within six feet when that plane touches down in Amsterdam.

  2. Can you please work out the statistics of the average revenues from suits and non-suite and make a comparison with the footage?

    Would love to see that.

ah, now that ask is right in my wheelhouse (not to be confused w/ PCL's version of RC's Schooner Bar), being a rev mgmt analyst where rev per sq foot and per guest is a common metric.

Based on those square footage and cabin count figures and using current 1/13/19 sailing lead in prices online for balconies and suites, suite guests drive twice as much revenue as non-suite guests. Suite guests are 12% of total paxs and 25% of revenue. On a sq ft basis, this high valued segment brings in $21 per sq foot compared to $16 for everyone else.

Now if Celebrity ran at 2 paxs per cabin, they'd already be out of business, but I get we have to start our models like that- what did we do before Excel? Anyways, here's my 2 cents on what the strategy includes: take away market share from the small suite only cruiselines and put them in these suite only areas; just do it as long as don't take away from flow and experience of the rest of us - personally, I go for the SV category when available like I did for this example 1/13/19 sailing - first time ever did a booking on 1st possible date. Nothing like coming home at sea to the sound and view of the wake trailing off in the distance.

Btw, in the cruising industry you need to be at 110%+ occupancy to turn a profit. Think all those pullman's in the non-suite cabins plus fold out coaches, etc. This is not the hotel/resort world where 90%+ occupancy is a success.

Has anyone gone to one of those websites listing all the big ships on the drawing board to launch in the next 1-5 years? Wow, I know there's got to be a lot of untapped market potential, but at some point, will have to start stealing pieces of the pie instead, especially if have to get into a price war if and when the next recession hits and first time cruisers are taken off the chess board.

  3. They have enough disclaimers that their lawyers would eat any lawyer a person, who is actually worried about this 15% deal, could afford for lunch.

Not to mention, what kind of lawyer would really take a case over $50?

business decision... yes, RCCL would prevail in the end after atty fees.. but that's the reason for quick settlement.. perhaps a free 14 night cruise for the lawyer + 1 in exchange for not having to pay defense attys hourly fee.

from a biz profit point of view.. all about volume.. # of ships x # of PCDs x % who do the bev pkgs...

I'm not an atty but did stay at Holiday Inn Express last nite and just think it's poor oversight not to change the mice print.. just thought was doing the cruise line a solid by pointing this out to them.. that's all.. you folks on these boards get your knickers in a twist way, way too much on the most trivial items.. I'm done with inputs.. just like to read to get a good laugh.. some guy noting on another board drinking 11 guiness by dinner and responder stating would need a week to recover.. this board is a great comic relief.. keep it coming!!

  4. See post #7 for the same answer with regard to Royal's website having incorrect info.

FYI. I sent a notice to RCCL on this very same topic when I noticed the $40 pkg went down to $35 and I went to book it thinking it was a marketing test and noticed 15% hidden increase when went to check out.

That was 2 weeks ago and still didn't change it. An aggressive lawyer could have a field day with this on a quick non-disclosure settlement.. deceptive advertising?

  5. Why go on Celebrity?

    Hmmm. let's see...

Solstice Class Ships w/ over sized sunset bar, string quartet w/ wine & cheese on the lawn club at actual sunset, or try out some bocci ball against the officers, change ups in itineraries and brew selection at Micheal's Club- and that was on Infinity. Aquaclass = Blu, Blu and more Blu- and that's why the secret is out of the bag and Aqua prices are going way up against balconies.

Oh and did I mention Solstice class ships.. try one.. big ship w/ lots of nooks and crannies.. still feel like on your own super yacht sometimes sitting in those over sized comfortable loungers.

I'm not one these days that requires an ice rink or wave machine at sea or a big outlandish show production, so the various live music offerings on Celebrity work for me (anyone see Dave Cameron or how about Will Foraker?).

This is of course just one cruise junkie's opinion who drank the kool-aid a long, long time ago and still loves it even after saying would never go on a "big" ship again - and that was back when pax count started climbing to 2k.

For those fortunate enough to afford the extra cost after spending $2k - $3k pp to start on cruise and airfare, I say just upgrade to the all inclusive vacation experience at sea and buy one of those high end drink pkgs and make all this extra drink or 2 discussion a moot point and focus on what's really important - making the boss aka the wife happy.. (insert cheesy comment here). Oh.. and just wait til Friday for the 1-2-3 deal... now, that's when the rest of us can get the pkg deal.. check out price on Wed and see if rises to make up for freebies.

FlaFan, A Diamond on RCL going back to Nordic Prince & Elite on Celebrity going back to Horizon or Zenith - don't recall which (finally earned since last sailing - no longer reciprocated only)

  6. would've voted for an American pick up truck had there been one; have never sailed on Carnival brand so my vote should not count. Need to go on at least 2-3 per brand to get a real taste; 1 imho and may get 1 bad experience that tints view point. have done 4 Princess, most recently the Star Baltic in Jun; yes, that Star, and only way could tell which side of the ship fire was on was to smell the new varnish & carpeting. Did 1 HAL- the last Westerdam in early 90s before the days of the megaships.

anyways.. funny story here as to why would include an American made p/u truck.. recall walking along the pier at old town in San Juan during a stay over after getting off the Dawn P. couple yrs back and saw 2 guys in tank tops getting ready to haul a cooler of cold ones onto the Carnival Destiny and thought to myself- yep, stereotypical Carnival crowd profile: country music, line danclng, and so on. that new Mellencamp song about the good ol' USA of playing in the background for the ad. for me, a pick up truck comes to mind.. think what brand of ship Hank Hill would choose.. he drives a truck... maybe not F150.. could be one of those extended cab types, with 4 doors, enough to sit the whole family + the dog & still haul the cooler and beach gear to the dock in the back.

now for Princess, one of those SUV cross overs, the trucks built on a car chassis, comes to mind.

need to convince the wife to try out Carnival 1 of these times; heck, Port Canaveral and the ol' Glory only an hr drive from here. Corporate Carnival doesn't care though, $$ still going in the same pot. As long as $$ don't go over to the dark side of RCCL/ Celebrity.
