  1. Haven't stayed at the Hampton but have stayed at the Holiday Inn Rocky Point. There are, I think, three hotels there and a restaurant. The restaurant is a Bahama Breeze. Both times we have tried to eat there it has been packed with a long waiting list. I would imagine the Hampton is similar to the Holiday Inn. Holiday Inn is just a generic hotel with comfortable room and bath. Perfect for short precruise stay. You might get more information on the Florida Board. The Holiday Inn has a shuttle to the cruise port. Not sure about the Hampton.

  2. Not if your DH -- mine -- has Parkinson's, had a heart attack and a stroke -- takes many medications which make him fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

The Nook or Kindle would drop to the floor and be broken. He has dropped many books.

Library is good for him. Books can be replaced more easily than a Nook or a Kindle.

My husband would fall asleep reading his Kindle. It was in a case that opened like a book. I tied a ribbon around the "spine" of the Kindle and made a loop on the other end that could go around his head. You could use a piece of string around the Kindle and a lanyard too. Just hook the lanyard on whatever you tie on the Kindle.

A Kindle is wonderful to read on. You can make the words as large as you wish to accommodate you vision. It also holds you place. You can travel with as many books as you wish. A nice case even gives you the feel of a book. If you have physical problems, it is very easy to turn the page.

  3. Don't over think this. I understand, I do it all the time. This is a cruise. Everyone will be getting up at the same time and mostly going to bed at the same time. I think the two cabins you have now are perfect for your situation. Many people share cabins and respect the other person's privacy in the bathroom. There is a sign in the bathroom asking everyone to conserve water. Hopefully, your daughter will respect that request.

  4. I will go with the book a room suggestion for the same reason we all fly in a day early. Anything can happy with flying. Bad weather in any part of the country can mean your plane doesn't arrive for your flight. All the problems you stated can happen with any flight. I can't imagine flying all night and trying to enjoy the first day of my cruise. Napping right after you get on the ship is problematic. They will be bringing luggage into your room, you will have lifeboat drill. Hotel rooms in Ft. Lauderdale are quite reasonable if you book early.

  5. We had the drink package on our last cruise. My husband likes a Perfect Bourbon Manhattan made with Makers Mark. This isn't covered under the package. The server suggested that she would charge us for two drinks. That worked with other servers too. I think she charged us for a Manhattan and a shot of Makers Mark separately. We never came near the 15 drink limit so this worked out well.

  6. When we left out of Tampa on the Ryndam several years ago, there was a parking lot right next to the dock. Couldn't be more convenient. Not sure if ships always dock in that same location. Actually now that I think about it I know the Eurodam uses a different location. Couldn't see the parking lot from that ship.

  7. We cruise with friends. They wanted to do the HAL hotel package. We did not. They booked the Visconti Palace through HAL. We booked it on our own. Instead of HAL transfer to the ship, we booked a shared ride with another couple we met on CC. We went in a private car. They went on a large bus. We also just got a cab at the airport to the hotel. That was super easy. This was several years ago but if I remember correctly we saved a lot of money. I also think if you book the hotel independently you can book the trip to the ship at the hotel. Of course, you can't depend on them having the room. Breakfast was included with both of our rooms. I think our room was a slight upgrade from theirs but not enough to matter. I liked the hotel but it is only convenient to the Vatican. All the other sites are a cab ride away. That wasn't a problem.

  8. Insides are fine for me. When in the room, I either update my smartphone schedule against "On Location" or just need a break. The stern location is very handy for main dining room, lido outdoor and explorations cafe. Outside of meal time, Crow's Nest is my fav, so stern is not handy for that.

Unexpected? okay, the heavy steel door to "Oscar" stairway will close shut forcefully from air pressure differences. I used it a lot to reach outdoor Lido, but handle it carefully.

    Douglas

I agree that the steel door is very heavy. I'm a senior female. I was curious what was out that door and went out. There are things you can trip on the deck and the door was dangerous for me with the wind.

  9. I wouldn't mind see them in advance either, but I do make it one of my daily chores after getting some tea and or breakfast to wonder down to the MDR to view the days menu's. That way the Wife and I can decided on the evenings plans. Its gets me some small amount of exercise and we get to be surprised.

Yes, this was our after breakfast routine too.

  10. I just this minute booked our airport/hotel transfer with Barcelona Day Tours for $59.00 Euro total. We have also booked them for a Barcelona tour for the following day. They came very highly recommended to us, so no worries.

Yes, they needed our flight number and airline and arrival time. He said that it takes approximately 1 hour to get through customs and retrieve luggage. They do monitor your flight for delays, etc. He guaranteed he would be waiting outside of customs with a sign. He also gave us a phone number to call in case of emergency. We are not taking our cell either, but he said that we can use any public phone in the airport to call. He said that they do airport transfers all the time and that their service is guaranteed.

I like the idea of just grabbing our luggage and having someone waiting to take us to their car. No worries about the fare and no waiting.

    Yes, thanks, sounds nice.

  11. I have a question. If you use a car service, how do you let them know you are ready to be picked up? My cell doesn't work in Europe and I really don't need it to. I know you tell them your flight number but surely they aren't waiting outside the whole time after your plane lands. It can take awhile to get luggage etc. Are they really there when you need them? Seems like a taxi would be easier.

  12. On our Feb. cruise on the Veendam, I tried to get them menus for the whole 2 week cruise. I was told they weren't made up yet. After I made that request at the front desk, they delivered the menu daily to our room. I really wanted to see the menus for the whole cruise so we could decide what nights to go to the Pinnacle. That didn't work but it was nice to have the menu delivered each morning.

  13. I carry a plastic sandwich bag with me when I cruise. I take one of the thin washcloths in the public bathrooms on the ship, wet it and put it in the plastic bag. I take this with me as I find not all rest rooms in other countries have running water. Of course, I return the wash cloth when I'm done with it. I find it a bit icky to just use hand sanitizer after I have used a public rest room.
