Do they check the passport as proof that you have not been in the affected areas ?

No passport checks specifically for that but they do check them at check in. I had to hand the guy my declaration as he didn't seem to want it

  2. For anyone due on the Seaside soon and concerned, we are on it this week and very little virus concern. Thermal screen at check in is quick, plenty of hand sanitisers. You need to fill out a form saying you have not been to China in the last 14 days and they ask you to report to the medical centre if you have symptoms.

Umm. Those numbers were leaked from a company called Tencent, which is the largest online gaming company.  The also own social media and chat sites in china.  I'm inclined to believe Tenant's reports about as much as most of the crap I read on facebook.

Even Tencent dispute the larger numbers - they say the screen grabs were doctored (they are even quoted saying this in the article). Taiwan news is not the most reliable source anyway when it comes to China (nor is the guy from the beverage store or the unnamed 'netizens' who seem to be the main sources of the story).

I kindly provided a link in my post with supporting data. You can google the door welding on your own.

So your supporting evidence is an article in the Taiwan news that quotes a liqour store owner who saw different numbers? I will stick to the WHO for now.

Correct.  See post #45 in this thread.

Mortality rates can be misleading for a couple of reasons.

    1. They are generally calculated based on those presenting for treatment as a percentage of subsequent fatalities - so a lot of people not presenting at hospitals because they have a mild form or don't even know they are carrying the virus (and there is evidence this is happening in China and also evidence that sick people are staying home because hospitals are full). This could mean the mortality rate is actually lower than the official figure.

    2. The virus has originated in a country where the government has a lot of control over the media and this could mean that figures released are not necessarily genuine (they could be hiding or not counting deaths, or they could be unaware of them for some of the reasons mentioned in Point 1. This could mean the mortality rate is actually higher.

The good news for those outside China is that the measurable mortality rate is significantly lower than 2.1% at the moment and a lot lower than many existing viruses.

    Unfortunatelly a false down.

Noticed that the number for the last day, gets updated a few times along the day.

So if you look at the graph early in their input for the day, it will show nearly flat.

My suggesrion is to just consider the data till one day before the last one.

    R.

Thanks - I can read the data (unfortunately have to do it for a living) - was more in hope than expectation that we would get a plateau.

Not sure if the trend is decreasing or stabilized, but I am amazed that is has doubled in less than a week.

It is scary stuff  - however from the knowledge I have gathered from an unhealthy obsession with pandemics, what normally happens is a plateau and then a steady decrease. Hopefully this is the start of the plateau phase and not a false dawn.

Just read from someone who boarded the Seaside on Saturday.  MSC has implemented thermal scanners to take your temperature from a distance of about 10-15 feet prior to boarding.  And apparently your temperature has to rise above 100.4F for there to be an issue.  Didn't hear anything about trying to monitor people with the sniffles or coughs.

Thanks for the update - that sounds reasonable enough. Guarantee I will get a coughing fit in the embarkation queue.

Is the buffet still self serve or has MSC started to require their staff to do all the serving?

This could be a great idea if guests are not using the sanitisers

See this is where I'm worried.  I'm schedule to be on the Seaside on the 29th.  My daughter is 2 and in the first year of preschool.  She has the common cold pretty much constantly right now, which leads me to a point where I'm still fighting off the residual effects of having a sinus infection from Christmas through the first week of the new year.

I don't have a fever but I still have a cough every once in a while, and cold air gives me the sniffles.  Am I going to be denied boarding because some of these appear to be symptoms of the coronavirus if I happen to have a residual cough triggered in the terminal?  What about anyone with allergies?

I hear you. I also suffer with my sinuses. This is in no way contagious or likely to cause a temperature but the symptoms could be alarmingvtobpeople or staff in a heightened state of virus awareness.

You purchased insurance that would cover you if you had a health related cancellation, right?

I do have travel insurance but that won't help me book transatlantic flights or pay for accommodation - I will not get instantly reimbursed.

In light of the coronavirus outbreak in China, #MSCCruises is immediately taking further precautionary measures for the health and well-being of its guests and crew on all of its global fleet.

MSC Cruises has undertaken a series of actions since 24 January, and due to the latest coronavirus developments, today implemented additional public health measures across its fleet. While there are no cases of coronavirus on board any of MSC Cruises’ ships these measures are additional steps to secure the health and well-being of all guests and crew.

    - Guests from all nationalities are required to fill out a pre-embarkation questionnaire to ensure no-one boards their ship who has travelled from mainland China or visited mainland China in the past 30 days. Anyone who has travelled from mainland China or visited mainland China in the past 30 days will be denied access to the ship;

    - Mandatory non-touch thermal scans conducted for all guests and crew prior to embarkation for every cruise operated by the company anywhere in the world, and persons with signs or symptoms of illness such as fever (≥38 C°/100.4 F°) or feverishness, chills, cough or difficulty breathing will be denied embarkation;

    - Elevated deep-sanitation on every ship in the line’s entire fleet;

    - Guests who may have fever symptoms will be isolated in their cabin and the same measure applies for their close contacts, including guests staying in the same cabin and family members, as well as any crew member who may have served these guests.

These measures follow previous actions that were taken last week. Guests and crew who travelled last week from mainland China were already screened for symptoms upon embarkation, and were requested to report any symptoms of illness to the onboard medical centre.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, MSC Cruises has been closely monitoring the public health and safety situation in each of the regions its ships sail. The company has been consulting with international and local health authorities to follow their advice and recommendations

While this is a good step to take to protect guests on the cruise, it leads to the possibility of guests not being able to travel because they have a temperature (not necessarily caused by the new coronavirus or any contagious disease). I am more concerned about getting to Miami on Feb 15 and being refused boarding due to me or my wife having a temperature of 38 or above. This would leave us in Miami a week away from our scheduled flight home and with no accommodation.

Is there any precedent for this? If you booked through a tour operator like us and your cruise is part of a package where would you stand regarding a refund and also costs incurred by either staying in Miami for a week or rearranging your flight home?

  13. While the site would not let me type in the fields, it did let me select a different '-' to the one automatically selected under 'city' and this allowed me to progress.

The MSC app seems to work a lot better than the website.

    Thanks all.

Someone posted the other day that if you log out of the site completely and click on "web checkin" from the home page, then enter your booking number and name it will let you into the check in screen.

It worked for me that way a few minutes ago.  You might give it a try.

Hi - This worked up to a point. It let me get to the check in form but their ridiculous website failed again on step 2 and address - first it asked for a county (for which the preferences were provinces), then it asked for a province (for which the preferences were counties) and then a city (for which there were no selections to pick).Because I could not select a city it would not let me proceed any further. Never come across such a poorly functioning website.

  15. Hi

First time cruiser - sail next Feb and can't wait.

Really love these forums so I am going to pester you all for a while.

I am aware that Seaside has two buffets and two regular restaurants that are part of the package and that you are given an early or late seating time for the main rooms.

My question is do you still need to let the restaurant know in advance whether you will be dining there or can you just show up at your allotted time and expect a table. If you do have to advise them then I assume you should let them know if you have decided to stick with the buffet?

I am fairly sure that the drinks package can be used in the dining rooms but can someone confirm this is the case?

Is every other place you can eat apart from the buffets and the two restaurants payable? I know there is a ports bar and a bistro and probably a few other places like that - if they do snacks etc. are they all extra? If so can you bring food from the bufffet with you into these places?

    Thank you.

  16. The 60 days would make sense as we are not yet at that point. MSC Customer Service helpfully provided this information "Please be advised that he web check-in should be available in next 6 months time" so they obviously are not aware of it although they did offer to check me in manually so I can always do that.

Will try the suggestions above and see if I get anywhere.

    Thanks all.

  17. Hi

    Newbie here.

Having a few issues with MSC website - could not enter address to join the MSC club so they had to do that for me. Now it is telling me the Web Check in page is down but MSC have told me I am too early to check in?

As the FAQ on their website does not tell you when you can check in and I have seen many people on the forums say they check in as soon as they have their boarding number, does anyone know why I would not be able to check in online and if MSC are correct that I am too early then how long before I sail can I do it?

    Thanks
