In this link you can also find pictures and videos of Oceania's Riviera, Holland America's Veendam and Celebrity Equinox. In the pictures you can see the location of the ships and the landing area which is at the Fishing Lodge in the Cap Cana Marina.
In this area there are shops and ocean front several restaurants and bars. Upon disembarking you will find an Information center to help you get around !!:)

Do these tours need to be arranged ahead of time - either with the ship or a private tour company - or can you just pick up a cab at the port?

Not there for whale watching. Any other recommendations if I don't want to do a tour? I am thinking just a peaceful beach day.

Hello California Cruiser: Cayo Levantado beach break is one of the nicest tours in Samana, you may purchase it via the cruise line.
If you are interested in a more active and unique tour combine the cave and mangrove excursion with the Cayo Levantado beach stop.

On which ship are you arriving ? Once you disembark at the pier there are informacion booths that can offer info on activities, taxis, shuttles etc.:)
