Back to reality. I chated with Virgin. The Redemption Spa is entirely co-ed. Some nice options with a mud room, salt room, steam and sauna, heated marble slabs, multiple small pools of various temps, etc. The individual showers in the changing area are roomy, but no single-sex sauna or steam. Darn!

Sucks, I do not know why this is becoming a trend?

No, completely different. On the port side but much larger, with big floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the sea, three showers and even a bucket full of cold water mounted on the wall - pull the chain if you dare. Plenty of towels and some hooks for your clothes. Still free, single-sex and a big improvement, in my opinion.

At least the Pinnacle Class are new builds with good facilities.

  3. Hey Cruisers!

Quick question, how would rate the Koningsdam Workout/Spa Facilities? I am a serious lifter (though friendly in the gym) and I wanted to know how large the workout area is,  are there free wights or just machines? What is the spa area like, are the facilities CO-ED or Single sex?

    Thank you for your input!

    • I have to agree that the sauna on the Koningsdam is terrific. Not much excitement but it has a huge window looking out to the sea. Although the sauna that you were packed in like very happy sardines sounds like fun.

Is this off of the mens locker room? I mean do you have to change into a suit then strip in the sauna? Or do you just wear a towel going from the locker room to the sauna?

    Happy to chat anytime, Mark

Pride of America. They haven't canceled it yet. We were on it many years ago. I remember a fairly large single-sex sauna and steamroom. But thought I read recently that everything is now co-ed. So I've lowered my expectations.

I really hate booking a ship and being disapointed that facilities are under repair or do nopt match the deck plans

I agree that the lack of male massage therapists is a problem.  And I’m sorry, like liftingdad women simply do not get the body as well as men.  Also, liftingdad, I’ve not been able to reach you so feel free to contact me. Mikeharp2021 at your same place

Had great Male therapists on Cunards Queen Victoria in 2018 and on Viking Star in 2017. Was disappointed that on NCL and HAL there were only female massuers.

The only NCL male that I had was on the Pride out of Hawaii, great guy, great separate steam, sauna facilities too. But not on any other NCL ships on my recollection.

Both the sauna and steam rooms have windows on the Spirit class ships BUT they are frosted so you can't see out of them.  You can see the shadows of people walking past the windows so guess they had no choice to frost them.

Steam room has 2 tiled benches facing each other, each bench sits 2 or 3 comfortably, 4 if you squeeze in.

Sauna has a 2 tiered bench on right hand side that faces the sauna heater.  Each bench would hold 3 people but if 3 on top bench their feet might prevent 3 on bottom bench.

In my experience it was rare to see more than 3, maybe 4 guys in either at one time.  Mornings I'd share facilities with 1 or 2 other guys, night time (between 830pm and 10pm closing time) was very rare to see anyone, I'd occasionally a Staff member enjoying a steam late at night.

    Hi Everyone

Just wondering those of you that are avid runners or that work out daily on the ship, is the best idea to get laundry done or is there a nifty idea of what you usually do with your gym clothes? Do you bring a weeks worth or wash a few outfits on the ship? Just looking to pack as little as possible while still getting my run in, everyday! Thanks

I hand wash everything workout related. I try to be careful choose easy to dry fabrics, and I admit I overpack !

I was just curious as to how other gym rats handle being on vacation.

    Do you skip the workouts/exercise?

Do you continue to eat healthy?

How do you handle all those tempting desserts?

I try to eat clean, stick to my work out schedule. Of course on a ship or at a resort, adjustments have to be made, but working out is such a part of me, I cannot ignore it on vacation.

All Mainstream Cruise lines have about the same amenities.  Some folks like MSC Yacht club better then the NCL Haven or Celebrity Retreat.  I really don't think you can go wrong with either one.  Don't worry about ages for your children.  All the ships are family friendly.  When you get in to Luxury cruising, it will be different.

    I hope I helped you.

thank you so much for responding so fast

We have seen all ages. Families, older parents/grandparents, young children, etc.

It depends on the ship but here are some examples....

    thank you so much!

Cruise Critic did give MSC the "Best Onboard Gym" award in 2018 (Seaside and Seaview) and I expect that all ships after that will be similar or better.

  13. I was hoping if there is a vaccination requirement for all passengers and crew things would be more relaxed in the wet areas.

I will be planning several cruises now that I am vaccinated. Being a guy that has been lifting/working out  all my life, I really need a good sauna/steam daily and enjoy it also pre dinner. I love the camaraderie of single sex facilities, and I have met some great men, had some great discussions. Taking my son on his first cruise.

Anyone feeling like chatting about the best facilities that they have experience, feel free to contact me.
